When you bring your dog to LGR for grooming, I’ll be doing so much more than simply grooming your dog!

I’ll be health checking them while they’re with us, I’ll never replace your vet, but here are just a few things I’ll be looking at…

It won’t be a surprise that I take a good look at your dog’s coat and skin. When they’re under the dryer, I get a really clear view of their skin and can notice rashes, warts and any lumps that shouldn’t be there. If their coat is usually silky and shiny and it’s looking a bit dull, this can be a sign of something being off.

I’ll let you know if your dog has put on or lost a significant amount of weight. You might think you’ll notice this yourself, but as I only see them every few weeks it’s more obvious than when you see them daily. It could be a sign of a problem which will need checking by your vet.

If your dog is wearing their nails down unevenly, it could show lameness which needs checking by your vet. Long nails can also cause injury to the legs, shoulders, hips and eventually the back due to them putting the legs in an incorrect position.

If I do your dog’s teeth as part of their groom, I’ll be checking for growths, cracks and fractures, loose teeth or anything unusual with the gums.

I can pick up on other things that might be off such as an ear infection, a sore spot shown through being sensitive in the area or even being quieter than usual. If I notice ANYTHING unusual about your dog, I’ll let you know, and suggest you seek veterinary advice where necessary.

With all that in mind, that’s why it’s so important to keep your dog in a good, regular grooming cycle. Visiting us at least every 8 weeks is ideal so that I can keep an eye on all of the above and keep the coat in good condition. As a general rule, owners will be able to keep the coat brushed out in that time, but going any longer may result in knots starting to form. If the knots are left, they’ll become matted by 10 weeks and are likely to be in pain by 12 weeks. If your dog becomes matted, I have no choice but to shave the coat off… no option of coat length will be given. It will be short all over!

On a final note, I am more likely to see behavioural issues in dogs visiting infrequently than those on a regular schedule, but then I’ve never met a ‘grumpy dog’ that was perfectly well either…
