After all the rain we have had, the guinea pigs are finally able to go back out on the grass. The grass is dry and they have a nice shaded spot in the garden.

We've not had a guinea pig yet that doesn't like dandelions. It's a shame there are none left for them to enjoy. Here's Charlie earlier in the year enjoying a dandelion.

Some lovely results from Staffordshire on Thursday. We are extremely please with Alice's 3rd place out of 18, (juvenile) smooth coated challenge AA and Miss Marple's 3rd placed Teddy Challenge out of 26. Currently all three are under 5 months. Our next show will be August so they will then move into 5/8 months.

We are really excited for this show. Not only are we taking our little show team with us we are also looking forward to a great day out. Hopefully we will get to see the dancing diggers, the falconry and the dog show. We just hope the weather is going to be OK. I was hoping it would be flip flop weather, but it will be wellies if this rain continues.

Do you need to bath your guinea pigs? Definitely not! Guinea pigs can live their entire life without ever having a bath. However baths are beneficial in some circumstances, If your guinea pig is particularly smelly they may need a bath, rescue pigs often need a bath too depending on the condition they are in when rescued. Long haired guinea pigs are likely to need a bath more often than a smooth short haired pig and pigs with skin problems often benefit from having a bath. Show pigs will be bathed before a show to ensure they are in top condition.
We very rarely bath our pet pigs. Usually just once a year, twice at most, for the majority of them. We bath Charlie (pictured), every few months as he has flakey skin, we use Nizoral shampoo for him and our other teddies. He doesn't mind being dired by the hair dryer on a cool setting either. As we are entering a couple of our new pigs into a few shows this year we will giving the show pigs more regular baths.

Thank you to all our followers. We hope you are enjoying the page as much as we are. We have many more plans for our cavies this year. We have more shows to attend and next week we will be picking up a 14 week old sow to add to the caviary. She will be the last new addition this year.

Yesterday I decided I would have a guinea pig free day today. No shows to attend, no grooming to do, nothing to clean out. But then I realised we were almost out of hay. What else could I do but go on an hours round trip to pick some up. I guess everyday is a guinea pig day after all!

Do you need to weigh your guinea pigs?

You don't NEED to weigh your guinea pigs, but it is a useful thing to do. Losing weight is often the first sign of illness.

Each of our pigs are routinely weighed once a month. We also weigh each new pig when they arrive and keep checking their weight every couple of days. When a pig first arrives they are often scared and can lose weight in the first few days in their new home. If you have a litter we advise weighing any new born pups daily.

Providing they have a good healthy diet with plenty of hay and daily veggies, what they actually weigh isn't important, it's the sudden weight losses we need to keep an eye on. Ours are all on the exact same diet but there is a big difference in weights. Preston is our lightest adult at 955g and Minnie is our heaviest at 1248g. We are monitoring Preston as his weight is declining, but it's probably due to him being an old man now.

This is something we always have in our first aid box for our animals. As well as being able to use this on the guinea pigs it's also suitable for other pets. It does have an expiry date so we usually buy the smallest bottle for the guinea pigs as we never use a full bottle before it expires.

Today was clean out day. The babies, Alice and Jane were moved from the small hutch they were in to one twice the size. They look so little and lost in there and this still has a divider in so it will be expanded again as they grow. Also Betty moved in with the other sows, Minnie and Dolly after a very successful bonding session on the grass today.

We had a lovely day today at the Oldham Cavy Club show. As this was our first proper show we weren't expecting to come home with anything, but Alice did us proud with first place Junior handler, smooth/crested any age sow. Her junior handler is very pleased with herself and of course she's extremely proud of little Alice.

Today will be spent preparing for our first ever show (other than the fun shows we attend for charity). We're not really sure what show prep actually means but we will do some nail clipping and make Alice as presentable as we can. She did have a bath a few days ago so hopefully she will look ok. I'm sure we will pick some tips up at the show, which will help us prepare better for future shows.
