We thought we'd start Christmas off without vet trips, but here we are again, this time with Shadow fighting for her.

The sheer number of cats living on the streets is starting to weigh heavily on me. It’s not just the countless kittens being born—it's everything else these poor cats have to endure. The injuries, illnesses, hunger, and fear they face daily are heartbreaking.

This year has brought us so many severe cases that it’s hard to process the suffering we’ve witnessed. 💔 I dread to think what the vet bills will be in January.

But we must keep going—for the animals that need us, to fight for their lives, and to be their voices.

At Furry and Friends Animal Rescue and Sanctuary, our mission is simple yet powerful: to rescue and rehabilitate stray and feral cats, kittens, and other animals in need. 🐾

We’ve spent over £16,000 on building and maintaining safe enclosures.

We’ve covered thousands in veterinary bills to ensure every animal gets the care they need.

💔 But we can’t do it alone. Our funds are limited, and despite achieving charity status and passing all checks, we still operate without grants or external funding. Without your support, we may not be able to continue rescuing at our current rate.

Meet Charlie! This little one was rescued from the streets when he was much smaller, where he wouldn’t have survived on his own. He’s been lovingly bottle-fed and is now happily eating on his own. Charlie will be ready for adoption once he’s fully vaccinated in mid-January, so he should be all set to join his forever home by early February.

Please note, Charlie will need to be taken to the vets we use once he reaches 2kg to be neutered.

We are making some important changes to how we operate at Furry and Friends Animal Rescue and Guinea Pig Sanctuary starting in 2025:

🐰 Rabbits

We will now only be able to offer a full-term safe haven for rabbit-friendly rabbits. This is because we no longer wish to use hutches with runs. Instead, we aim to use our Rabbit Warren and run area as a free, open space for the rabbits, along with the indoor summer house as the main indoor space where they can go in and out as they please. The indoor summer house is also equipped with heating and lighting, ensuring a comfortable environment year-round.

We are also happy to take in Continental rabbits 🐇, giving them the care and space they need to thrive.

All incoming rabbits will be assessed to see if they can be integrated into the rabbit herd after being neutered and vaccinated.

🐇 If a rabbit cannot be integrated, they will be put up for adoption, as we feel this is in the best interest of the rabbits.

🌟 Adoption processes will apply to ensure these rabbits find 5-star homes.

The minimum adoption donation will include the cost of neutering and vaccinations, with all proceeds going back into supporting the rescue.

🐹 Guinea Pigs

We continue to be a safe haven for guinea pigs. Our female guinea pig enclosure is a run-free area, with a large indoor safe space that has its own heating and lighting, ensuring a comfortable environment (over 20ft by 30ft). We do not use hutches for our guinea pigs. 🏡

For male guinea pigs, we will only be able to offer placement if we have available space in one of the male enclosures. 🐾

We also warmly welcome Skinny pigs and Abyssinian guinea pigs! 🐹 They have their own special haven where they can enjoy plenty of space and care.

🐱 Cats and Kittens

This coming year, we will be focusing on helping cats and kittens that have faced a harsh life on the streets, mums-to-be, orphan kittens, and those who are desperately in need of help. This includes cats with disabilities, cats whose owners have sadly passed away, and cats from small colonies who need to be saved from further suffering. 🏚️

We will also prioritize male cats who require assistance.

We are increasing the minimum adoption donation for cats and kittens to help cover some of the costs of their care.

For cats, this currently includes neutering and microchipping. Starting in early 2025, it will also include their vaccinations.

For kittens, this includes their vaccinations, microchipping, and neutering (if they are old enough).

💊 Monthly Treatments

All animals in our care receive monthly flea and worming treatments, as well as any veterinary treatments they need upon entering our care. These costs are covered entirely by us.

💜 Why These Changes Are Necessary

As a rescue, we do not receive grants or funding. All costs, including veterinary treatments, food, shelter, and monthly flea and worming treatments, are paid out of our own pockets.

Our rescue isn’t about bringing animals in and putting them up for adoption quickly. Many of the animals we take in come from the streets or have been abandoned. 🏡 It takes time, patience, and care to get them healthy, build their confidence, and prepare them for adoption. Some require extensive treatments, all of which are funded by us and the kind donations we receive.

We will be continuing to run our Anti-Bullying Policy. We will not accept any form of bullying or nastiness of any kind towards us or towards the rescue and sanctuary

Meet Blossom! 💕🐾

Here you see Blossom, our beautiful girl who has Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH), also known as wobbly cat syndrome. This neurological condition affects her balance and coordination, but it doesn’t stop her from living a happy and playful life!

What is CH?

CH is caused by the underdevelopment of the cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for balance and coordination. Cats with CH may wobble when they walk, experience tremors, or have difficulty jumping. However, CH is not painful, does not worsen over time, and with a little love and care, these cats adapt wonderfully.

How is CH Different from Swimmer Syndrome?

While CH is a neurological condition, swimmer syndrome is a muscular disorder affecting the development of a cat’s legs. Swimmer syndrome kittens often appear flattened and struggle to stand or walk. With early intervention, swimmer syndrome can often be corrected. CH, on the other hand, is a lifelong condition but doesn’t stop cats like Blossom from thriving!

Cloud ☁️ – it’s amazing to think we rescued him, his brother Snow, and their mum, Willow, just in time. These little ones truly know how lucky they are to be alive today. Without our intervention, they wouldn’t have made it, just like the two female kittens who sadly didn’t survive. One of them passed away in our arms on the way back from the rescue.

Their vet bills soared into the thousands, but every penny was worth it to give these precious lives a second chance.

And this is why we do what we do – to save and rescue those who need us most, the ones others may turn away from. 💙
