BLUE CROSS NEUTERING FUND

Unfortunately, we have been made aware that the Blue Cross fund for financial aid in neutering XL bully's has now stopped with immediate effect. This is due to the popularity of the scheme exhausting the budget set aside by Blue Cross. This does mean we will not be able to offer this service to XL bully owners in the coming weeks now we are close to the first neutering deadline, however we do still accept the RSPCA neutering vouchers if you are eligible.

If you have any questions regarding the Blue Cross fund, financial help regarding neutering or the deadlines for bully's please give us a call.

CAT MICROCHIP LEGISLATION

We are now nearing the deadline for cats to be microchipped under new UK law. All cats must be microchipped by 10th of June.

If this deadline is missed, owners will have 21 days to book in for the microchipping procedure before facing a potential fine of up to £500.

After this date, the new legislation means any new cat owners must get their pet microchipped by 20 weeks of age- this does include indoor cats too.

Microchipping is a quick and simple procedure with a needle that inserts a chip into the skin of your pet. It is vital this law is followed to ensure the safety of your pets should they ever go missing.

Our £20 cat microchip offer is valid until 31st of July. If you would like to book in for microchipping, or are unsure whether your pet has been chipped, please give us a call or book online via https://www.whitecrossvets.co.uk/book-an-appointment

Calling all ferret owners!!
We are running a ‘Jill Jab’ clinic within the next coming months! Please read the information below!

Female ferrets or ‘Jills' need to mate to stimulate ovulation. If the Jill does not ovulate, she'll continue to produce the hormone oestrogen, causing her to remain in season which can lead to life-threatening oestrogen-associated anaemia (deficiency in red blood cells). Allowing her to mate with a vasectomised male will prevent this without resulting in pregnancy. If a vasectomised male is not available, a hormonal injection known as the ‘Jill jab’ can be administered to suppress the season. This drug is being discontinued by the manufacturer and there is no replacement.

We have one bottle available in the practice, which must be discarded on the date of opening. For this reason, we have decided to run a ‘Jill Jab Clinic’, where Jills coming into season can be brought in and given the injection. We have reduced the price of the injection to £66 per ferret which includes a thorough health check. Please give us a call to register interest, as we have no date set as of yet. Once we have confirmed a date, all who have registered interest will be contacted to book in.

Henry is 10 years old and unfortunately has several lumps and bumps. Did you know nearly 50% of dogs over 10 will develop cancer? It's a worrying statistic! Henry's lumps were scanned with our new state of the art scanner and luckily all his lumps came back with a 99% chance benign result! There were no needles, and the results took just a few minutes. Here he is enjoying some liver paste and a fuss during the 40 second scan.

if your dog has a lump and you are worried give us a ring to book in for a scan!

We are now offering a new screening tool for lumps on your dog, using state of the art technology and no needles to determine whether your dogs lump is cancerous! Give us a ring or send us a message for more information!

Here at White Cross Vets, we have invested in the HT Vista, an artificial intelligence skin cancer screening device. Sadly, half of dogs over 10 years develop cancer, and 1/3 of those cancers are skin-related. Catching cancer early means a better prognosis, which is why we want to introduce this new technology to our dog owners. The device is safe to use on the skin and is well tolerated by patients. No-needles give instant results, are good value for money and are highly accurate.

The HT Vista is the first artificial intelligence skin cancer screening device for dogs, performed by vets and nurses. It is a 40-second scan with no needles; the results take two minutes. In order to conduct the scan we will need to clip the fur around the area that will be scanned.

The HT Vista uses heat diffusion imaging technology (HDI) to determine if a mass is most likely benign or requires further investigation. The device heats the lump by 6 degrees and is left to cool. The device then monitors the thermal activity and special features of the tissue. The data is sent to an artificial intelligence program for analysis, and results are returned in two minutes.

The device can do this as different types of skin react differently when heated. For example, healthy skin maintains temperature well and unhealthy does not. This is because healthy and unhealthy skin have different structures, metabolism, and blood supply.

Your dog's mass will receive a score between 1-10 and a percentage of how likely it is to be benign. For example, a 10 HDI score is suggestive that the mass is 99% benign, and a 4 HDI score is suggestive that it is 89% benign. The vet will discuss the results and the follow-up that may be required once the results have come through.

If you find a lump on your dog, book in with our team today. We can discuss your options, perform the 40-second scan!

For more information give us a ring or send us a message!

Top Tips to make your garden more wildlife-friendly!

According to reports, more than one in 10 of the UK’s wildlife species are threatened with extinction.

If you’re interested in being involved in wildlife conservation, why not start at home? There are many ways you can make your patch a little greener to keep wildlife thriving in your garden…

🐝Grow flowers: Not only do flowers look beautiful, they are essential to bees and provide food for many insects. Choose different plants that flower the longest (providing pollen and nectar) and ditch the pesticides!

🦎Create a pond: It doesn’t need to be big or complicated! You can use a buried bucket or trough but remember to make sure there is a way out or at least one sloping side for animals that may fall in by accident.

🕊Install a birdhouse or feeder: Give birds a place to stay in your garden by installing a birdhouse or feeder.

🪱Make and use your own compost in your garden: Making and using your own compost will naturally enrich your soil, and also provide a habitat for worms and woodlice.

🦋Relax about weeds and grass cutting: There’s no need to stress about weeds! Plants such as nettles and daisies are an important source of food for many insects including butterflies and moths. Longer grass is the perfect habitat for many plant and insect species to thrive, including butterflies and wildflowers.

🐜Create a space for insects: You can leave piles of rocks and twigs in an area of your garden, to create shelter for all sorts insects such as beetles and spiders.

🦊Keep your hedges: Native hedges or a mix of trees and shrubs will naturally create safe shelters or nesting sites for the larger animals and also food sources for a variety of creatures.

🦔Use gapped fencing or create small gaps under your fences to create easy access for hedgehogs.

Wildlife Conservation Day is a global awareness initiative that aims to provide people with the opportunity to learn more about wildlife conservation and to be part of the solution to common threats to endangered species, including poaching, commercial and residential developments, climate change and pollution.
