Can I feed my laminitic horse haylage? 🐴

The short answer - yes - but there may be other, better suited forage options! 👇

Horses that have a history of laminitis and are therefore prone to laminitis require a forage that is ideally less than 10% water soluble carbohydrates (WSC sugars). The environmental conditions at the time of harvest of a hay or haylage are key factors which influence the sugar levels within a finished forage.

It is possible for both hay and haylage to fall below this 10% water soluble carbohydrate threshold and it is for this reason that you cannot categorically say that haylage is not suitable.

We analyse all of our hay and haylage products regularly and so we can select the most suitable forage choice for those requiring a low sugar diet from a source that is consistently analysing below the 10% threshold.

When the seasons change, so does our routine ❄️

Whether that be stabling a horse overnight, or changing how often you ride your horse.

Before feeding your horse make sure you consider these things (so that you don’t under, or over-feed them):

🐴 Age
🐴 Weight and condition
🐴 Whether your horse needs to gain or lose weight
🐴 Level of work
🐴 Ability to maintain weight

Did you know that allowing your horse to graze over larger periods of time is better for their digestion?

But how can you do this in practice?
🐴 Provide as much turnout as possible
🐴 Split their hard feed into multiple smaller feeds
🐴 Use slow feeders and hay nets to increase the length of time your horse eats forage for

Despite the cooler weather, horse owners still need to be watching for signs of laminitis!

With the sudden changes in weather, from frost to rainfall, there will be changes in grass growth which could increase your horse's risk.

It’s important you know the signs so you can take the appropriate action if needed! These are:
🐴 Reluctance to turn
🐴 Changes in behaviour/temperament
🐴 Reluctance to pick up their feet/weight bear on three legs
🐴 Shifting weight from foot to foot
🐴 A strong ponding digital pulse
🐴 Abnormal heat at the hoof wall/coronet
🐴 Shortened stride
🐴 Being careful on stony ground
🐴 Shifting their weight onto their back feet

Remember: overweight horses or those with conditions such as Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) or Cushing’s Disease will also be more at risk!

16/01/2023

A horse’s digestive system was designed for grazing. In other terms, consuming lots of small bites of forage over extended periods of time.

It wasn’t designed for a couple of large feeds.

This is because the process of grazing helps to prevent stomach acid from moving and splashing the stomach lining, decreasing the risk of stomach ulcers.

Allowing constant access to forage or grazing can help reduce the risk of stomach ulcers, and keeps your horse feeling their best!
