✨Meet Fynn✨

Fynn is a 2 year old border collie who has a left hindlimb lameness with intermittent hopping due to a paw and pad deformity.

I have been treating Fynn for a while now and have been working on re-educating his gait and encouraging the use of his left hindlimb, as well as correcting and alleviating any compensations.

This includes massage, PROM, stretches, weight shifting exercises and strengthening exercises.

Fynn has greatly improved and is consistently engaging his Left hindlimb on soft surfaces and maintains good muscle mass on the limb.

✨ Meet Olly ✨

Olly is a 12-year-old golden retriever, he has been diagnosed with elbow and hip osteoarthritis and has multiple chronic disc protrusions.

The main goals for Olly are to reduce pain and tension, improve engagement of his muscles, improve joint range of motion and enhance proprioception.

Olly’s current treatment involves a lot of massage and stretches, as well as laser and a home exercise programme.

During our session yesterday, I incorporated a proprioceptive walkway including different surfaces and ground poles. This exercise helps to enhance body awareness through the use of sensory stimulation, which leads to the stimulation and improvement of motor function and overall coordination.

He also enjoys his underwater treadmill sessions at Highwood Canine Hydrotherapy

✨ Canine Athletes ✨

Veterinary physiotherapy can be used to formulate a conditioning and strengthening programme to allow canine athletes to excel under the physical demands of the sport, enhancing performance and reducing the risk of injury.

Techniques such as massage and balancing exercises are vital in allowing your dog to perform at their highest level.

A veterinary physiotherapy assessment is also beneficial before competing your dogs to have peace of mind that they are in the best condition possible and pick up on any areas of tension before they worsen.

Physiotherapy can also:

- Improve fitness and stamina
- Reduce fatigue
- Improve range of motion and flexibility
- Improve core stability
- Increase muscle mass and strength
- Improve balance and coordination
- Reduce pain and muscle tension
- Reduce the risk of injury
- Faster recovery times

Please contact me if you would like more information about how physiotherapy can benefit your sporting dogs.

✨ Osteoarthritis ✨

Osteoarthritis is a common condition of the joint which is characterised by degeneration and inflammation.

Osteoarthritis has been shown to affect 80% of dogs over 8 years old and it is estimated that up to 60% of all lameness in horses stems from arthritis or joint disease.

Osteoarthritis can trigger pain responses, which can vary from behavioural signs or postural signs, such as irritability and weight shifting. These signs can be used as a diagnostic tool as well as x-rays.

Other common signs of osteoarthritis include:

Dogs:

- Licking paws/joints, fur discolouration from saliva
- Difficulty getting up from laying down
- Difficulty posturing to urinate, not being able to stay still while toileting
- Stiffness
- Lameness
- Less mobile - reluctant to exercise and play
- Loss of muscle
- Swollen joints
- Lethargy
- Changes in behaviour - aggression, anxiety, irritability

Horses:

- Heat or swelling around a joint
- Changes in joint shape
- Stiffness
- Lameness, gait abnormalities
- A change in warm up duration, it often takes longer for the horse to feel ready to work.
- Shorter stride
- Decreased performance
- Loss of appetite
- Changes in behaviour
