This is a fantastic but hard hitting video made by a trainer I follow and respect in the States.

Please, if you’re thinking about getting a working breed dog watch this video first.

Listen to what he’s saying and consider the issues he raises.

It is not a decision you should take lightly.

Research the breeder, research the dogs lineage, research how much blood and treasure you will need to invest in training your dog properly.

Not just to start with, but on an ongoing basis for the rest of its life. To give it the mental and physical enrichment that it deserves and needs from you.

If you buy the wrong car, you can take it to a car park and sell it to a guy in a porta cabin.

If you buy the wrong dog you haven’t got that option. They are living breathing intelligent and feeling animals and we need to stop treating them like commodities and things that we can just throw away when they don’t work properly .

Eye Contact and Expressions Explained

Eyes are the window to the soul, even for dogs!

Direct eye contact can be interpreted as a direct challenge. So do avoid sustained eye contact with strangers dogs. But, establishing regular eye contact for up to a maximum of 4-6 seconds can ensure your own dog (who hopefully trusts you after you have gradually built up to this level) checks I with you while moving around.

In dog world: hard, staring eyes are a clear indication of aggression (which may come from a place of fear)
Whereas soft eyes show relaxation and trust. Many owners I work with describe softer eyes as loving eyes. 👀

Day 3 of the seven days of body language tips for dog owners:

Ear Expressions: Understanding Ear Positions

Your dogs ears can be a huge clue as to how they’re feeling in any given moment. Again this is fairly breed specific. For example a German Shepherd will be very expressive with their ears and will even use one at a time to effectively point at something it wants you to look at.

A spaniel, with their heavy floppy ears on the other hand can do less. So again, observe how your dog uses their ears in different situations and environments.

Ears up generally means alert, ears back could mean fear or submission.
