🐾 Breaking News from the Waiting Room! 🐾

Meet George and Oscar — two of the cutest little whisker-beans you’ll ever see 😻… as you can see they were floored to discover they’re not boys after all! Yep, turns out these are definitely girls 😅💅

🎀 Sometimes it’s REALLY tricky to tell kitten gender when they’re tiny — even experienced breeders and new kitten-parents can get it wrong! Until around 3–4 weeks old, the differences between male and female kittens are subtle and easy to misread. Vets are always happy to double-check if there’s any doubt.

Meet Coco ✨
She was swept into the surgery feeling very under the weather however it didnt take long for her to show us how glamorous she is and still managed to be an absolute dream patient. Coco recently stayed with us for a short visit while we carried out a specialised blood test to help us to diagnose her with Addison’s disease.
Not only did she handle everything like a pro, she was wonderfully well-behaved and a genuine pleasure to look after (and admire)! We’re so proud of you, Coco — proof that you can be fabulous, even at the vet 💅🐾

🐾 Extra To Love? Or a Little Too Much?

Did you know that over 50% of pets are currently classified as overweight or obese? While "chonky" pets might look cute in internet memes, those extra pounds can lead to serious health issues like arthritis, diabetes, and heart disease.

This National Obesity Week, we’re on a mission to help our furry friends live longer, more active lives! 🏃‍♂️🐶🐱
How can you tell if your pet is at a healthy weight?
Try the "Knuckle Test":
Ideal Weight: Feel your pet’s ribs. They should feel like the back of your hand—individual ribs are easy to feel with a thin layer of fat over them.
Overweight: If their ribs feel like your palm, or if you have to press hard to find them, it’s time for a lifestyle change!
3 Small Changes for Big Results:
Measure the Kibble: Use a standard measuring cup rather than "eyeballing" it.
Swap the Treats: Try crunchy carrots or green beans instead of high-calorie processed biscuits.
Active Play: Just 10-15 minutes of extra movement a day can make a massive difference.

We’re here to help! ❤️
Weight loss for pets isn't about "dieting"—it’s about wellness. If you’re worried about your pet’s weight or need a tailored nutrition plan, give us a call or drop by for a weight check!

Talk about recovery in style! ✨
Louis was in with us recently to have a mass removed. While our team was focused on his surgery, his mum was focused on his post-op wardrobe! She handmade this beautiful coat specifically for his recovery.
We love seeing the incredible bonds between our patients and their owners. Louis is now home and healing fast🦴

Is it a Winter Paw Print... or something else? 🤔
At first glance, this might look like a tiny, festive paw print left in the snow! 🐾
But this little picture actually tells a much bigger story...
This is a microscopic image taken from a dog's ear! 😲 What you are seeing is an overgrowth of Yeast (specifically, Malassezia), which is a common cause of itchy, uncomfortable, and smelly ear infections in dogs!
We spotted this artistic little 'paw' while checking a smear under the microscope during a consultation. It just goes to show you what amazing things we find when we investigate!
If your pup is scratching their ears, shaking their head, or if their ears smell a little funky, don't wait! Yeast and bacteria multiply fast.

Call us to book an ear check! Let's clear up that microscopic mischief! 😉

🩺 Our Anesthesia Monitoring Checklist
Our job during anesthesia is to be the pet's constant advocate. A dedicated veterinary nurse monitors your pet continuously—it's like being their personal life-support and comfort crew! We monitor a comprehensive checklist of vital signs every minute: we check their Heart Rate (HR) and Rhythm to ensure their heart is beating strongly and steadily, and we watch their Breathing (Respiration) to confirm how often and how deeply they take breaths. We use specialized equipment to measure their Oxygen Saturation (how oxygen-rich their blood is) and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Levels (ensuring they properly breathe out waste gas). Crucially, we track Blood Pressure to maintain good flow to vital organs, and we constantly monitor their Body Temperature to prevent them from getting too cold. Finally, we use simple, visual checks like Gum Colour and Eye Position, which tell us a lot about their circulation and how deep their sleep is.

🌡️ The Cozy Science of Anesthesia: Keeping Your Pet Safe and Warm! 💖
Going under general anesthesia (GA) is a big moment, and we know it can be worrying for owners. We want to show you a little of what goes on behind the scenes to keep your beloved pet comfortable, warm, and stable while they're sleeping!
❄️ Stay Warm, Stay Safe!
When a pet is under anesthesia, their body temperature naturally drops. Keeping them warm is absolutely vital for a smooth recovery! We use a whole arsenal of tools to make sure they stay snuggly and warm throughout their procedure:
Warm Blankets: Layers of soft bedding right from the start.
Special Heat Pads: These pads are designed to provide gentle, consistent warmth underneath their body.
"Bubble Wrap" Blankets: Yes, we sometimes use medical-grade bubble wrap! It's fantastic at trapping body heat, acting like a little personal greenhouse.
Foil/Space Blankets: Similar to bubble wrap, these are excellent for reflecting heat back towards the patient.
Cozy Socks: We even use socks or bandages on their paws to keep those little extremities warm!

We all know the festive season brings a little extra chaos... and here at Two Counties vets our own furry (and feathered!) family members are leading the charge!

Now it's YOUR turn!
Does your pet turn into a holiday havoc-maker? We want to hear your funniest, most chaotic Christmas pet stories! 👇
Tell us in the comments: What is the most memorable piece of Christmas mischief your pet has gotten into? 🤣

🐾 Tiny Paws, Big Dangers: A Winter Reminder for Pet Parents! 🐾
While our furry friends love to explore the winter wonderland, their sensitive paw pads are vulnerable to hidden hazards like ice melt, salt, sharp ice, and even extreme cold.
After every winter walk or outdoor adventure, take a moment to:
Inspect Paws: Look between their paw pads and toes for ice balls, cracks, cuts, or trapped debris.
Clean & Wipe: Gently wipe their paws with a warm, damp cloth to remove any salt, chemicals, or ice melt. These substances can be irritating if left on, and even toxic if ingested when they lick their paws.
Moisturize (Optional): If their paw pads tend to get dry or cracked, consider using a pet-safe paw balm.
A little care goes a long way in keeping those precious paws healthy and happy all winter long! ❤️ Spread the love and the paw-tection!
