Quiz Question 3 - Name the type of treatment being carried out by Flip Mckervey on this lovely horse who suffers from some neck and back pain.

Bella Robinson and Sarah Keith you guys are already in the prize draw which we will run on the 27th June.

Can you guys name the treatment that the horse in the photos is having done.

This is a new service we will be offering and if anyone is interesting in discussing it please get in contact with the office and Philip will be happy to talk it over with you and see if it may be a suitable alternative to traditional back and neck medication.

The procedure itself costs less than £300 including Visit/Sedation/Examination (All prices inclusive of VAT)

Winner will be announced on Monday 2nd June

Spring Prize Draw No 1 🏆

Case Type - Ultrasonography

This patient was presented to Emerald Equine Vets with a predominant Left Forelimb Lameness.

After the initial palpation and examination, an ultrasound exam of the front limbs was conducted.

This is a nice example for clients on why a good orthopedic vet should always scan the contralateral limb (ie the non affected limb), as no textbook will provide as accurate an example of what is normal for any given horse in comparison to its own non-affected limb.

Can anyone guess what area of the forelimbs is being scanned and also can anyone make a stamp at guessing the name of the affected structure in this case (Is it the DDFT/SDFT/Manica Flexoria/Palmar Annular Lig/Check Lig or the Suspensory Lig)?

Ends 9am 14th March (Answers to the case will be posted tomorrow)

From all who get the correct answer, a randomly selected winner will be announced and entered into the Spring Prize Draw 🏆 for an Emerald Equine Vets Embroidered Numnah - the final winner will be announced in late May 2025 😊

This Friday the 14th March our office will be closed from 11am we will be open as usual from Monday 17th March at 9am.

Case Study of the Month (A Keratoma)

One poor pony's mild lameness turned out to be quite a bit more dramatic than either his owner or I ever expected. Needless to say we are so happy that we managed to find the issue and he's now on the road to recovery.

Bear, a 5 year old cob gelding was suffering from an intermittent left fore lameness and his owner wasn't sure whether to carry on or seek help. Luckily she did seek help and we managed to isolate the lameness to Bears left foot, initial standard view radiographs looked very unrewarding, but upon taking a few more alternative radiographs a large defect was detected in Bears Pedal (Coffin) Bone.

Bear was referred to Rainbow Equine Hospital and had a CT scan which confirmed my suspicions the defect was caused by a growth called a Keratoma. A Keratoma is a benign tumor that grows within the hoof capsule itself and they are relatively rare or maybe under diagnosed. Unlike many cases of Keratoma's which are found due to the fact that they cause recurring foot abscesses, poor Bear never had an abscess which is quite hard to believe with the size of the Keratoma that was subsequently found which is very clear to see from the CT scan and radiographs attached below.

Many thanks to his owner for letting us share this case with you all, just highlighting a rare but possible cause for an intermittent foot lameness.

Update for Clients: Insurance Claims Policy

As a small independent clinic, insurance claims are proving to be a major issue, due to the vast timeframe involved from a claim starts until we as a clinic receive payment. Due to this Emerald Equine Vets will now have a set policy of payment within 14 days from when the client is invoiced for payment to be received by us when it involves an insurance claim. We are still happy for you to select payment directly to Emerald Equine Vets, but if the claim is not settled within the 14 day window, we expect the client to make sure the invoice is cleared in entirety within this 14 day window.

Many Thanks

Philip @ Emerald Equine Vets
