We are proud to announce that Medivet Dorchester can now perform CT scans, and are accepting Outpatient referrals for local practices as patients of Medivet Dorchester.

This means we will be able to see more and do more for your pet, while continuing to provide the excellent care our owners have come to expect from us.

What is a CT Scan?

A CT scan, or Computed Tomography to use the full name, is a revolutionary technique that uses X-rays to create an in-depth image of any area of your pet's body, be it their head, their chest or even a leg. It can be used for long-term conditions such as arthritis, for planning an operation your pet may need, or more acute conditions like difficulty breathing. Your vet will tell you if they think a CT scan will be appropriate for your pet.

Over the coming week we are going to post pictures of the patients we have seen for CT so far, and some information about why we are so excited to talk to you about CT. Stay tuned for more information by following our page.

Here is Charlie, with our vet Alex all ready for his CT scan! 🐈

‼️‼️‼️Disclaimer: images of a graphic nature attached to post‼️‼️‼️

We have unfortunately seen a confirmed case of Alabama Rot (CRGV) at the practice, after having been walked in the Moreton Forest area.

It is important to note that it is still a rare disease and fortunately not seen very often in practice however we would like to spread awareness of this disease and help try to prevent other dogs in the area from coming in to contact/being exposed.

After many years of this disease being researched we still do not know the underlying cause and research is still ongoing; we do however know that it is most common in Winter/Spring and in muddy, woodland areas. Our advice is to always wash muddy paws/feet after any walk that involves woodland areas or muddy puddles.

The signs to look out for at home are any unexplained skin lesion - most commonly on the feet/lower limbs, but can also occur on the face, tongue or in the mouth; which tends to develop a few days after a muddy walk. Patients can also develop other signs of being unwell; vomiting, off food or lethargy (at the same time as skin sores or sometimes a few days after.)

The pictures attached show the extent of the skin lesions in the recent case.

Our advice would be for any unexplained skin lesion (especially if your dog is also showing signs of being unwell) to book a consultation with your Veterinarian for assessment. As always we are there for you & your pets 24/7; if you need assistance please call the practice: 01305 262913

For further information and most up to date research information about CRGV (Alabama Rot) please refer to Anderson Moore's Veterinary Specialist website: https://www.alabama-rot.co.uk/pet-owner/about-crgv/

💚 It is now compulsory for all cats to be microchipped. Please call the practice on 01305 262 913 for more information or to book an appointment to get your cat microchipped 💚

It is now compulsory for all owned cats in England to be microchipped, making it more likely that lost or stray pet cats are reunited with their owners and returned home safely.

This includes cats that usually only stay indoors.

All keepers must ensure their cat is microchipped before they reach 20 weeks of age and their contact details stored and kept up to date in an approved pet microchipping database.

A review on physiotherapy with Lizzie from Mrs Celia, Minnie's owner

"My dog ruptured her cruciate ligament in September 2023, I didn't want to go down the surgical line so my vet suggested physiotherapy.

From the first session of physiotherapy with Lizzie there was a marked improvement in the dog, which may well have been due to my hugely increased confidence from getting a clear understanding of the problem and how to manage her. I was given completely clear instructions about the nature and length of exercises and how we anticipated to increase as well as carefully graded exercises which were carefully demonstrated to me.

You have a long initial session with Lizzie so there is time for the dog to relax and Lizzie carries out a thorough assessment also you have time to ask questions which you may not think of in the 10 minutes when seeing the vet.

The dog also seemed to benefit from skilled massage which I do in the evenings now with her.

Seeing a trained physiotherapist has defiantly been the most useful intervention that we have had and I could not be more grateful. I wish I had Known about physiotherapy sooner!"

For more information or to book for physiotherapy please speak to your vet, reception or contact me directly to get more information at:

❓️Did you know...❓️

💚 We offer keyhole surgery as an option when neutering your female dog here at our Dorchester practice.

Key hole surgery utilises tiny incisions and specialised instruments, allowing for precise internal exploration and procedures.

This is a really good option when spaying female dogs as smaller incisions and fewer stitches mean that your pet should be back on her feet as soon as possible, it also reduces pain, incurs minimal scarring, and requires shorter hospital stays for your cherished companion.

Known as a laparoscopic spay, it is minimally invasive with lower risks and many advantages. These include:

⭐️ Smaller wounds
⭐️ Less chance of infections
⭐️ Reduced post-operative pain
⭐️ Faster recovery
⭐️ Fewer complications

Our experienced veterinary team is proficient in providing the highest standard of care using this innovative approach. For more information please contact us 01305 262913 and one of our team will be more than happy to book you into speak to our Veterinary Surgeon regarding the specific details for your pet.

💚 Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month 💚

❓️Did you know...❓️

The title 'Veterinary Nurse' is NOT currently protected by law. This means anyone can call themselves a Veterinary nurse WITHOUT having an acredited qualification from the RCVS ( Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons).

You can rest assured that all our Veterinary Nurses here at Medivet Dorchester 24hr are Registered Veterinary Nurses which means they have completed their accredited certification and are on the register regulated by the RCVS. Our student veterinary nurses are currently studying their level 3 qualification and are training towards their RCVS acredited certification.

Both types of nurse are easily identified by the colour of their uniforms:

💚 Dark Green = Registered Veterinary Nurse

❤️ Burgandy Red = Student Veterinary Nurse

⭐️ Did you know...?⭐️

🐰Rabbits moult 4 times a year!

🐰The two heaviest moults being at the end of winter and the end of summer.

🐰A moult can last from 2 weeks to more than 6 weeks depending on your rabbit and its breed.

🐰It is really important to brush your rabbit every day when in moult to avoid too much fur ingestion.

🐰Digesting the fur can contribute to hairballs and blockages which could result in gut statis.

🐰To keep their digestive tract moving encourage your rabbit to eat more hay and drink more water.

🐰 Spraying their fresh food with water can help to increase their water intake.

🐰Check daily that your rabbit is eating well, is producing normal faeces and that their behaviour is as you'd usually expect.

🐰 If you are at all concerned that your bunny is not behaving as they normally would please contact the surgery as soon as possible for urgent advice.
