Looking forward to this weekend when we have all the new owners visit the litter for the first time 4 weeks of age and starting to show their characters.

We took some pictures yesterday of them all, the 2 boys and 2 sets of 3 girls.

If you're interested in one of these amazing pups, this weekend could be a good time to pop by. Get in touch to fix a time.

Our latest litter is here, born 1/4/24 & we have 2 girls available. Unfortunately both prospective owners had change of circumstances whilst waiting for them to appear and can no longer devote the time just yet.

If you are looking for a girl and wish to be considered, do get in touch!

Luckily for someone out there, there has been a last minute cancelation for one of our boys from the current litter.

Can anyone remind me of whose next in line?

Get in touch through the website and I'll get back to you on Thursday.

Here's a clip of them bouncing about in their whelping box only a few days ago. Now 5 weeks of age, they'll be ready for new homes come the 21st. All health checked, microchipped and ear tattoos. Mother Kaya & Xhabbo (Zejak).

*** RESCHEDULED TO THE SPRING ***

Really looking forward to this date next month when we have a great Canine Behaviourist & Trainer present a seminar local to us.

It's a chance for our new ridgeback owners to be prepared for the road ahead, along with myself learning new insights into getting the best from any canine relationship.

Tickets are £30 each, 2 for £50 and zoom options will be added soon!

Animal Behaviourist Aftab Ahmed presenting a mini seminar just outside Blandford, Dorset, helping you take your canine understanding to the next level!

If you are not a hound person, it may be hard to understand, but this says it all.
A basic understanding... Regarding your hound dog that I think most people miss.
*Hounds do not believe that they need you. You are a convenience - like a favourite coffee cup or a favourite pair of shoes. If the cup is broken or the shoes are lost, we can get along just fine.
Let me explain:
Other dogs like Labs, Shepherds, herding breeds, and a host of others, are bred to work WITH man; neither can do their work without the other. Even the worst behaved Lab cares when mom and dad are annoyed. It is in their DNA to make man happy.
*Hounds... not so much.
Hounds have been bred to be taken out to the edge of the woods or field and be let loose to go out and do what they do with NO INSTRUCTION from the hunter or handler. They go out and do their thing, all on their own. They make their own decisions and do their own work. And when that work is done and they have found their quarry, they command/call the hunter to come to them with those beautiful voices. (Who is working for whom in that scenario?)
Do you see how your hound thinks differently?
Life with a Hound is far more like having a spouse than a dog. It is far more of a "cooperative effort" with all the give and take that implies. Hounds are not going to do what you say just because you have said it. You are secondary to their desire. There has to be something in it for them. There has to be a trade off. If there is no reward or benefit for the Hound, the Hound cares little what you are asking him/her to do. People incorrectly refer to this as being stubborn - or worse, stupid. Hounds are actually neither of those things - they are just independent and cunning. They prioritize things differently than do other breeds. They prioritize differently and *you* are not always their priority. This is EXACTLY AS THEY SHOULD BE. They were bred to be this way. It is all necessary to be a Houndy Dawg.
When working with a Hound you have to always be thinking:
How do I make myself the priority?
What do I have to give this dog to make me more important than what it smells - or wants? (and do not expect that anything will ever be 100% successful every time - always be looking for your Hound to act like a Hound.)
We humans always think we are in charge of things. We think that we are top of the chain, the head honchos ... and we naturally approach training our dogs and living with our dogs this way - as though we are in charge.
Your Hound doesn't see it that way.
Your Hound - at best - sees you as a family member or as a sibling (if you are very fortunate - as a parent). Do you walk into your sister or brother's house, start barking orders and they hop to?
Mostly your Hound sees you as a good friend. And what do we do with our friends? When a friend does something for us, we return those favors. There is give and take. When a friendship is out of balance - when one friend takes and takes but does not give - the friendship suffers. It is okay for one friend to be the strong friend - the dominant friend in the partnership -- -but it is *always* a partnership.
Hounds are happiest when their humans are humble.

I did not write this but I found it to be VERY true!

With the lack of sleep and general time of year, I may have missed sending some of the personal email updates to those on our waiting list. If thats you, my apologies - do get in touch and connect.

Likewise if you wish to be considered for our future litters, we'd love to hear from you!

We have had the pleasure of Angus visit us for the last few weeks and it's been an absolute pleasure to see him settle in and play with his sister once more.

Both dogs are 10 months old and you can see a good difference in the different structure s between male & female. Already both being a good size, it will be from here forward that muscle bulk takes place. (Hopefully the brain development will also take place :-) )

Totally loveable and I totally love how these dynamic creatures play!

Scientific reasoning behind not using head harnesses or leaders on your dog!

Aside from that, simply on the side of aesthetics, why would you want to put something so ugly on such a stunning creature?

One more reason we do not use or recommend the "gentle leader or other harnesses that come across the dogs face.

Here is the vascular system in a canine head. This highlights the enormous amount of blood flow in the dogs nose. This blood flow serves many purposes, fuels the scent chambers, aids in temperature regulation, allows dogs to effectively track, but this also makes the dogs nose incredibly sensitive to touch. This is the main reason you should not use face harnesses. There are plenty of tools designed to communicate with dogs that do not put pressure on one of their most sensitive features. A new post on the blog...at long last!!

Written as the demand for dogs goes off the scale during Covid 19 lockdown.

Naturally many people are wanting great animals to share their lives with, but taking a further step into breeding needs experience, supporting networks and so much more.

If you are wondering why your pedigree dog has endorsements - go take a read!

Why Pedigree dogs are supplied as pups with breeding endorsements preventing them from being bred from, we list our reasons.
