🪰Flies - horses & farriers hate them!

It's unfair to ask a horse to stand still for shoeing as it's being eaten alive by flies. You can hardly blame them. The last thing we want is to turn shoeing into a negative & stressful experience.

For farriers, it's incredibly frustrating trying to do your best work on a half-ton moving target.
It can make it hard to pick up on any 'out of the ordinary' behaviours for your horse which are often early warning signs of pain.
A restless horse that snatches & jumps (not to mention the famous tail swish to the eye!) also HURTS.

Do:
✅ Apply fly repellent liberally! Pay extra attention to their legs.
✅ Use a well-fitting fly rug
✅ Acclimatise your horse to a portable fan (midges can't tolerate 7mph+ winds!)
✅ Use a cloth to apply or gels if your horse is afraid of sprays
✅ Manage the environment - set up fly traps and keep your shoeing area away from standing water & muck piles

Don't:
❌ Spray whilst your farrier is underneath the horse
❌ Leave fly masks on - often this can inhibit a horse’s visibility & increase chances of spooking
❌ Book an appointment at a peak pest times
❌ Dress your horse in dark colours or leave them sweaty as this attracts horse flies

PM, WhatsApp, text, call or email to arrange your 2023 bookings. 📔

Ok so now is the time to let you all know…….I’m heading back to work in the new year. I can’t wait, I’ve missed it so much.🔨🐴
Likely to be 3 days a week due to childcare constraints to start with and ideally grouping together similar areas on days. For example Corfe Mullen and Wimborne on a Tuesday if possible. There’ll be teething pains becoming a working Mum no doubt so please bear with me and I’ll try my best to provide the best service possible.
I must thanks my ladies in waiting for looking after our wonderful Alfie🤗
Feel free to share and I shall also message people that may not be on Facebook too.
Many thanks. ☺️

Here is the first customer to enjoy an equissage treat.
This is Finn and he’s an ideal candidate. At his stage of life unfortunately he is meticulously managed for EMS and osteoarthritis. This limits his turnout resulting in a compromised lymphatic system.
Enjoy little fella. 💆🏼

How can a horse owner detect hoof realted issues? Use these five signs to maintain healthy hooves and address hoof problems before they become serious.

I’ve heard this before, nobody panic!! 😌

This is the 1st in a mini series of post I’m trying to create for a little more client/owner information based on regular question I get asked.

#1
At this time of year everyone is clipping their horses and one main question that always arises at the same time is “why do my horses feet look very long”
the photos below were taken less than 2 hours apart and no the horse has not suddenly grown 3cm of growth during this time. The simple process of removing the hair from the coronary band will elongate the foots appearance and the removal of hair over the pastern making the legs look thinner will naturally make the foot look larger than before.

So don’t panic your horses feet have not suddenly changed but will look different due to clipping the hair from the legs.

I hope some find this helpful,

Ian 😉

😷A message to my clients.😷

During these difficult times I am following the advice of the FRC and the WCF, and of course the government.

At present I will continue to shoe as normal and honour appointments booked in.

As long as your horse isn’t dangerous I’m happy to help myself as long as they are in the stable and easily accessible and good to catch. I will be following the social distancing guidelines and expect my clients to do the same. There is no need for me to have any human contact or close interaction when going about my daily rounding.

I won’t be accepting any tea, coffee or snacks so don’t be offended when I decline, when this is over this will be the first thing to change! Also it might be best for you not to touch their feet. So I’ll do the cleaning for now.

Moving forward over the next few months, if you wish to have shoes off and go barefoot for a bit for financial reasons please discuss this with me, I will advise what to do best for the animal.

Until it is illegal for me to carry on my business, I will, on the grounds of animal welfare. If I develop symptoms of course I will have to stop for a while.

All the best and stay safe.
