Remember to stick to early morning or late evening dog walks when it's hot. Sometimes it's safer to miss the walk altogether 🥵

Taking your dog on a walk or to places with little or no shade can be fatal during summer. It's important for dog owners to remember… If in doubt, DON’T go out!

Heat-related illnesses in dogs are severe and can lead to organ failure, brain damage and even death 💔

🐍 Its Adder season 🐍

So let’s talk facts about adders and what you should and shouldn’t do if your dog was to be bitten by an adder

Facts:

Adders are often seen early spring/summer time. They enjoy basking in sunny spots, often in heathland, woodland and moors.

Adders will only bite in self defence, and are otherwise not aggressive. They only use their venom as last resort.

Adders protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981; it is an offence to harm, injure or kill them.

They have a black/brown zigzag pattern down their back, so easily distinguished from a grass snake which is mostly brown with a yellow band of colour around its neck.

——————

Here are a few tips that could help you in an emergency, should your pet be faced with an adder bite.

How to spot an adder bite on your pet:

The most common places to be bitten are lower limbs and the face. Quite often your pet may react and swell significantly, fairly quickly in the area it was bitten due to the allergic reaction to the venom.

You may also notice:

🔶Bleeding, oozing

🔶Visible wounds

🔶Howling and nervousness

🔶Bruising

🔶Lameness

🔶(If bitten on the face) they may start to have trouble breathing

Symptoms vary and they can be more severe.

If your pet has been bitten by an adder >

🔹Do:

Ring the vets immediately and get your dog down to the closest vets as soon as possible. (Drive to a vets, rather than walk the dog there)

Carry your dog if possible to prevent the venom circulating around the body quicker.

Keeping your dog as calm as possible can also help prevent the venom spreading as quickly.

(If access to water) bathe the area with cold water to prevent swelling

🔹Do not:

Apply pressure/bandage material or a tourniquet to the wound

Try any first aid yourself. This may cause more harm than good

——————-

Dogs who have suffered an adder bite require immediate treatment, and are usually given pain relief, intravenous fluids to support their circulation and tissue perfusion, medicines to reduce the body's reaction to the venom such as antihistamines, and other medicines as required. In some cases an antivenom is given.

Please call your local practice if you have seen that your dog has been bitten or you suspect that your dog might’ve. If you are not near your local vet at all however, it is sensible to seek emergency care at the most local practice to you at that time.

Are you looking for a fabulous duo to join your family?

If so, we'd like you to meet the beautiful Twirl & Wispa, who are two female Springer Spaniels that are 9 and 8 years old respectively, and would love to find a new home together.

These lovely girls entered our care as strays, so their past is very much unknown to us. However, this has not dampened their spirits, as they still have so much love and affection to share with their new family, who they hope will be able to give them all the pampering they deserve.

Although entering their senior years, this pair clearly hasn’t got the memo and are still super active.

Since being in our care, we’ve realised that they enjoy nothing more than charging around in our enclosed fields and chasing after squishy toys, which they like to parade around in front of us.

When out & about, in true Spaniel fashion, their tails never stop wagging, and their noses are constantly on the ground or in the hedgerows. We are sure that forest and heathland walks would be a big hit with these two!

These girls seem to have the basics down in their training, but we think they would really enjoy continuing this with their new family, to keep their brains active and working for that all-important, tasty treat!

Both Twirl & Wispa have been so confident with their carers whilst at the centre, and they have been enjoying all the affection and cuddles that we've been giving them.

Due to their well-rounded natures, we think they would be able to live with older children, like-minded canine friends and possibly a dog-savvy cat too.

If you are interested in rehoming this 'pawsome' pair, please check out our website at: www.mgar.org.uk/54486 and contact the team at Lincoln Farm for further details.

Please take extra care when driving in the New Forest to help protect our foals! 🐴

🚗 Always pass animals wide and slow and be prepared to stop, as they can behave unexpectedly.

✋ Do not pet or feed ponies and donkeys no matter how cute they may look as they can kick and bite - particularly protective mothers. You may also land yourself a fine of up to £1000!
