Cruise Isle of Man

One of the most daring rescues ever carried out on Manx waters occurred on this day 1889.

The Norwegian ship, the St. George, was wrecked off Peel Castle in a storm, but those heroes of the Peel RNLI Lifeboat Station, led by Charlie Cain were fearless in their rescue. As well as being commemorated by the nations of Norway and the Isle of Man, the heroism of the crew was written into immortality through the poem by T. E. Brown, 'The Peel Life-Boat,' beginning...

And the thunder of the rocks,
And the ship St. George..."

This poem was made famous in modern times thanks to its being taken up for recitation by the great John Kennaugh. We are very glad to have captured his performance in 2014 at the Peel Centenary Centre:

There is also a lesser-known version of the story of Charlie Cain and the rescue from the St. George, written by Hall Caine and published in 1914. It was printed in 'Princess Mary's Gift Book', a WWI fund-raising publication, alongside the likes of Rudyard Kipling, J. M. Barrie & A. Conan Doyle.

Molly has well and truly established herself, she has a fascination with toes, slippers and the leaves in the garden are great toys to bring into the house.

Today we were delighted to bump into Jan and Mark who had Baxter Theodore in tow. It has been a sad year with losing four of the litter, but we hope Belle and Baxter Theodore are still misbehaving in their dotage and get properly spoiled by their parents on their 15th birthday on the 1st September.

For us, our cocker journey is soon to resume with the arrival of little Molly who we hope to bring home in October.
