Please remember all wild animals need to stay as wild as possible! If you find a hedgehog which is underweight contact your local rescue but just a reminder to prevent this in the future we do sell hedgehog food and I’m sure they’d be very grateful if you left a handful out at night 🦔

Knowing when to help hedgehogs can be difficult...
At this time of year hedgehogs are preparing to hibernate and are storing up fat reserves to see them through until next spring.
This image shows two hedgehogs we are currently caring for (of different sizes,) but clearly illustrating how to spot an underweight hedgehog (left) via their 'oval shape/elongated' appearance when rolled up in a ball, compared to the 'circle shaped/spherical' hedgehog (right) who is of a healthy weight.
The underweight adult hedgehog on the left is only 550g and should be at least 800g+ by this stage. Poo samples analysed under the microscope have identified that she is infected with Thorny Headed worms which is a very nasty parasite and if left untreated results in death.

If you spot an underweight hedgehog, contact your local wildlife recue, experienced hedgehog rehabber or wildlife friendly vets for advice and treatment. Hedgehogs are now listed as vulnerable to extinction here in the UK and need as much help as they can get.
