I am a qualified animal behaviourist and have a Diploma in Animal Management and a Degree in Applied Animal Behaviour. I have volunteered for two national animal charities for around 4 years which has given me a wealth of experience in working with a diverse range of cats and dogs. I have spent a lot of time with nervous animals and animals with potential behavioural problems, helping them become

less fearful and anxious about various triggers and situations. I am incredibly passionate about animal welfare and putting the needs of every individual animal first which is why I started a pet support service. I believe it's important for animals to be able to stay in their own homes when owners are away as it's potentially less stressful for them than having to go to a cattery or kennel. I am very flexible, I am also available at short notice and recognise that all owners have specific and individual preferences and requirements for their pets which is why I tailor all my services in accordance with what is best for the pet and their owner.

My chill time every day over the Summer is spending the evening in our garden having a gin (or 3 🀣) and spending time with our 3 cats.

This is Mushka, we adopted her from the RSPCA about 5 years ago. She had been really neglected due to her specific needs for her brachycephalic breed e.g matted coat, severe breathing problems and she was extremely underweight/malnourished.

We are always still in awe of what a transformation she has made over her time with us, she is now around 12 years old.

Thanks to Katharine Vets 1 Group once again for looking after her recently and helping keep her in her best health.

We love you Mushka ❀️

Today, me and Jake took Jasper and Alfie for a walk around Wimbo woods.

We all had such a fun time. Jake is now doing his first solo evening sit with them too and looks to be having a fab time, being smothered to death by them both. πŸ˜†πŸ’•

I'm looking after Ruby, Carlton and Elise all weekend too.

I took Lucie and Bailey for a woodland walk yesterday then a walk for Maisie and Woody and finished with an evening pop in on Charlie and Ziggy.

Hope everyone's having a good weekend.

Love to all,

Natalka

I see posts all the time on local FB pages where people are asking if anyone has kittens for sale.

Well here's your chance to adopt one from West Norfolk Cat Centre Cats Protection!

All cats have a full health check, veterinary treatment, neutering and microchipping before leaving for their new homes.

Also, the adoption fee goes towards Cats Protection helping other cats in their care.

12/09/2024

This is such important advice, as we all know that often, animals are good at hiding their pain as it prevents them feeling vulnerable.

As an owner of 3 cats, all with various health issues, I'm constantly watching out for even subtle changes in their behaviours in order to ensure their health issues are not causing them any pain.

Please share for πŸ™β€οΈ

Why does chronic pain have an affect on behaviour?

The emotion of pain is a form of fear-anxiety and it can directly affect behaviour by increasing vigilance and leading to behavioural responses that are designed to keep the individual safe. For this reason an animal in chronic pain may show avoidance behaviour and try to keep distance from anything that it perceives to be a risk in terms of exacerbating its pain. This may lead to the pet being less engaged in social interactions and showing less interest in play or making very obvious attempts to get away. Painful animals may also show less obvious behaviours of inhibition or appeasement.
Inhibition involves the animal taking in information by watching and listening but not giving anything away. The result can be a pet who is very quiet and can easily be misinterpreted as being relaxed. It is important to watch for signs that the pet is monitoring the environment, for example by watching for ear movement and staring, and not to simply accept that they are "being very good". Appeasement involves exchanging information with others and because dogs are socially obligate animals they will often use this behavioural response when they are in pain. These dogs will seek information from those around them as well as give information back. This is often done through touch and these dogs may lean into people or nudge at them in ways that are misinterpreted as "attention seeking" and seen as unwanted or naughty behaviours.
Dogs may also sniff and lick at people in ways that are misinterpreted as affection. It is therefore important to be aware of changes in social interactions and not to dismiss increased interaction which might signify an emotional change. The other potential response to pain is repulsion and this involves behaviours which are designed to make the perceived threat stay away. Anything that the animal perceives to be a risk in terms of inducing pain can lead to a repulsion response and these responses can vary from a low grumble, to a significant growl, to an air snap and even a bite. While these repulsion behaviours are often considered to be the most serious, because of the potential consequences, it is important to remember that the pain can be equally significant for the pet regardless of which of the four behavioural responses it gives. It is very important to take repulsion seriously and to take steps to avoid the potential consequences of these behaviours but we must not disregard avoidance, inhibition and appeasement which are also important signs that an animal may be in pain.
In addition to the direct effect on behaviour chronic pain can have an indirect effect by reducing an animal's emotional capacity. The chronic pain uses up some of the animal's emotional "space" and means that they are more likely to react to other stimuli, such as noises or social interactions. When this happens the main thing that a caregiver may notice is a change in behaviour but the underlying pain also needs to be treated.

Mid Week round up!

Tchai's week long pop in visits came to an end yesterday but he made a new friend during that time. πŸ˜„

I finished a weekends worth of pop in visits for Carlton and Elise.

Peggy, Bailey and Lucie all had a good walk with Jake. (Jake's list of favourite dogs is growing, he adores little Bailey!)

I'm continuing Pups, Mutts And Pedigrees work with Barney in helping him with his reactivity towards either dogs.

I took young puppy, Rexy out for his training walks helping him with his confidence learning about the big wide world and he's doing great.

I've just finished a few pop in visits for lovely Ruby today and started a few days of pop in visits for Simon and Molly.

Woody, Suzie and Sid all had their walks today with lots of fuss and cuddles afterwards.

Aiyana and Bean's owner got in touch at short notice asking if I could pop in on them this evening which I was happy and able to accommodate. Having not seen Aiyana for a year or so, I had a lovely welcome from her. πŸ’•

Please always get in touch if you need help in an emergency, I usually can accommodate short notice visits and walks.

Now enjoying a gin with my cat, Poppy.

Love to all,

Natalka

I've always known Graeme Hall has no animal behaviour qualifications and purely out of curiosity have watched a couple of his shows to see how he 'trains' owners' dogs.

This attached post is just shocking and appalling that he is getting his team to contact actual qualified dog trainers to demonstrate their training methods then for him to then steal these methods and claim as his own for his TV shows!

⚠️ π‘Ύπ’‰π’š 𝑰 π’˜π’π’'𝒕 𝒃𝒆 π’‚π’‘π’‘π’†π’‚π’“π’Šπ’π’ˆ 𝒐𝒏 π‘«π’π’ˆπ’” π‘©π’†π’‰π’‚π’—π’Šπ’π’ˆ (π‘½π’†π’“π’š) π‘©π’‚π’…π’π’š

My first thought was to delete the email. I'm not a fan of Graeme Hall. I've watched a few episodes of his show, and in my opinion, he seems to make things up as he goes along, relying on outdated training methods.

However, I was puzzled. Was the β€œcravat” unwell, and they needed a stand-in? I'm a nobody – why on earth would they want to film me training a dog when there are so many high-profile trainers out there? Curiosity got the better of me, so I decided to give the researcher a call.

I'm still in shock as I write this. The researcher explained that they wanted to invite me to Lytham with my Border Collie to "demonstrate" to Graeme Hall how I would train my dog not to respond to a phone ringtone.

Graeme would then take my training method and use it to teach the Border Collie of the family seeking help – all while filming it for his TV show!

WTF 😳😳😳

I decided to dig a bit deeper and reached out to the force-free dog training community to see if anyone else had experienced something this bizarre.

It turns out that many trainers had also been asked to attend filming sessions to show Graeme how to train dogs before the cameras rolled. Most reported that they refused because of his methods, but a few had shown him and his team how to train a dog, only to be dismissed without any credit for their expertise.

I then did some open-source research on "The Country’s Best Dog Trainer," as the *Daily Telegraph* calls him. He has no formal training in canine behaviour or training. He’s essentially winging it with the help of whatever trainers are willing to show up and assist him.

According to his website, he charges Β£875 per session πŸ€”πŸ˜§

Now I’m not someone who normally criticises other trainers. I prefer to let my clients decide if I’m the right trainer for them based on how I work with their dogs.

However, I couldn’t let this pass without making it public knowledge.

If you're looking for a dog trainer, please avoid this programme and this man. You have no idea whose techniques he’ll be using week to week, and given that most qualified and accredited trainers want nothing to do with him, the quality of training you’ll receive is questionable at best.

Instead, do your own research and find a local trainer who aligns with your own dog training ethics. Organisations such as The IMDT or APDT - Association of Pet Dog Trainers can help guide you to qualified & accredited trainers in your area.

It's been another busy week here!

Today we welcomed another beautiful cat client, everyone meet Atreus! His owners have gone off to get married this weekend. ❀️

Rexy, the young puppy is doing really well on his training walks and becoming more confident on each one.

Maisie had a walk yesterday and today Woody had garden play time because it was too hot for walks.

Tchai got "furminated" at this mornings visit! πŸ˜†

It's been a really lovely week.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

OK so we all know how much I adore cats... I was thrilled to start my second lot of visits with this stunning ex CP British Short-hair cat this morning for a whole week!

This is Tchai. I first looked after him many months ago when he'd recently been adopted by his owners from West Norfolk Cat Centre.

To see him today so confident and full of beans absolutely warmed my heart. ❀️

I cannot possibly choose just one photo of him..or even 2 so here's 13!!! πŸ€£πŸ’•

Some of you may remember my urgent catmint appeal plea for my cat clients a few weeks ago as I was running low?

Well thanks to a lovely lady here in Downham who has been allowing me to cut as much catmint as I like from her garden, this is how we're starting the Autumn/Winter season!

So, to all my cat clients...hurrah for fun times ahead and plenty more catnip pouches and loose catnip sprinkles!! πŸ˜„πŸŒΏ

Meet Baxter.... he is such a babe! 😻
He is known to be ever such an affectionate chap who just wants to be loved. Baxter would love to find a comfy spot on the sofa for a relaxing snooze or a safe garden space to call his own. Baxter has lived with another cat before, so as long as he is slowly introduced, he may be content to live with another feline in his new home. We also know that he's lived with children before.
If you think that Baxter could be a good match for your family, then why not get in touch! Call 01366 328311 or email [email protected]

The past couple of days have been really tough because of what happened to Vinnie Payne this week.

It has been good therapy for me to have spent the past few days with some lovely animals.

Today I also received some lovely thank you gifts from owners which was so kind, thank you. ❀️

I'm currently doing a weeks worth of pop in visits on Simon and Molly and also ensuring the owners 4 hedgehog houses are topped up with biscuits.

Today when I was there checking the houses, I saw a hog in one of them and the owner said she had seen 2 others also in there.

I managed to get one down to Ryston Rachel's Hedgehog Hotel and she then came back with me and miraculously managed to find another 3 young ones! She said they should still be with their mum so they are now in her care having treatment required and will be released when well enough.

Big thanks to Rachel who was just awesome and what a thing she does for all the hedgehogs, all self-funded with the help of her huge band of volunteers and her husband!

It was nice to have a happy ending today. πŸ¦”

Hope everyone's had a good weekend.

This evening I received the most devastating and heartbreaking news that one of my dog clients had been hit and killed by a car. The car did not stop which is not only illegal but absolutely abhorrent!

Vinnie Payne was one of my first dog clients when I started my pet sitting business, I remember when I first met him he was hu***ng my leg. This was well over a year ago, I immediately hit it off with his owner and we began looking after him.

Since then, me and Jake have been walking him 3 times a week and he only recently started to have play dates with lovely Woody and they quickly became best friends.

He had an overnight with Jake earlier this month which Jake said he just loved.

My heart is broken for him and his owners, I can only imagine what they are going through.

I would like to dedicate this post to lovely Vinnie, he was always an absolute joy to walk and spend time with.

Jake took him to Shouldham woods many times to do some bike jumps which he loved.

Jake has MS and always told me how much he enjoyed his special time with Vinnie, he was always smiling with him and would do a daft voice in videos for his owners, much to their amusement.

He loved his special log at Wimbo woods which he would happily sit on and just take in his surroundings. A while ago, I actually considered buying a plaque for him saying 'Vinnie's log'.

He also loved racing round our garden with a red love heart teddy and then laying sprawled out with his back legs completely flat.

We only recently took him to his first dog show and Jake and I both felt personally offended he didn't get a rossette!

I also regularly talk to other owners about Vinnie and how lovely he is and they have all sent me their most sincerest condolences to his owner this evening.

Vinnie, you will always remain in mine and Jake's hearts always and forever.

We are sending so much love to Claire Payne and Spencer.

RIP Vinnie, we love you. ❀️

Mid Week round up! πŸ‘‡

Flash and Elvis' daily visits are nearly coming to an end, I have to say I've learnt a lot about guinea pigs these past 3 weeks that we've been looking after them. ☺️

I've been popping in on lovely Simon and Molly twice daily for their meals, fuss and play time.

I've done a few pop in visits on one of my first ever cat clients, Cossy, who I've not seen for over a year and she was super sweet purring on my lap and playing.

Barney had a walk, still working on his reactivity towards other dogs and calm walking which he's doing really well with.

I took a gorgeous young puppy, Rexy for his first walk into the big outdoor world this week and started basic training with him. He was so good and I'm looking forward to walking him twice weekly.

Toby and Bill had their last walk with me and Jake, Vinnie Payne had an early walk this morning and Suzie, Sid and Woody all had some garden play time later on due to the heat today.

I'm doing pop in visits on lovely Ruby this week, I noticed her owners toilet had broken and managed to fix it which I'm super proud of as anything technical in our house automatically gets allocated to Jake! πŸ˜† (Thanks for the YouTube tutorial Kim..😏)

Big thanks to Jake for helping me so much with various walks and visits, Jake gets so much out of spending his time with animals too. ❀️

Kaspar is pooped this week after helping me manage my diary for the week.. πŸ˜†

Hope everyone's having a good week.

Lots of love to you all and your pets,

Natalka

No holidays in animal world! 😁

Today started with pop in/feeding/enrichment visits on Lego, Reg, Flash and Elvis and Bumble.

Rosie, Toby and Bill and Woody had their walks.

I had a rare couple of hours break where I sat in our garden and combed our cat Poppy whilst chopping up fresh catmint and had a quick afternoon nap! 🀭

Then we finished the day with last visits to Flash and Elvis, Reg and Lego.

I was super happy to start a week long visit on my two best ex Cats Protection cats, Simon and Molly. Simon is a very nervous cat but he's now super comfortable with me which feels so lovely and better for him too! ❀️

Hope everyone's had a fab bank holiday.
