🎃👻 Halloween Hazards for Your Pets – Keep Them Safe This Spooky Season! 🐶🐱
Halloween is full of fun for humans, but it can be a little too spooky for our furry friends. Here are some important tips to keep your pets safe and stress-free:
🧁 No Treats for Pets
Chocolate, xylitol (found in sugar-free gum), raisins, and other Halloween goodies can be toxic to pets. Keep sweets out of reach and remind guests not to share!
🕷️ Costume Caution
Costumes can be cute, but not all pets enjoy wearing them. If you dress up your pet, make sure the costume fits well, doesn’t restrict movement or breathing, and has no small parts they could chew off.
🚪 Door Danger
With trick-or-treaters constantly ringing the bell, pets may get anxious or try to bolt. Keep them in a quiet, secure room during peak hours, and make sure they’re wearing ID tags just in case.
🔊 Noise & Strangers
Loud noises and unfamiliar costumes can be scary. Watch for signs of stress like hiding, barking, or pacing, and give your pet a safe space to relax.

Let’s make Halloween fun and safe for everyone—including our beloved pets! 🧡🐾

A lovely bit of History about where Downe Veterinary Clinic all began...

John Boyd Dunlop (1840–1921) was a Scottish-born veterinary surgeon and inventor best known for developing the first practical pneumatic (air-filled) tyre.

Dunlop moved to Downpatrick, County Down around 1862, where he set up a veterinary practice with his brother James, now Downe Veterinary Clinic. His work in Downpatrick was primarily focused on animal care, and he became a well-respected figure in the local community. It was during his time in Ireland - though later in Belfast - that he developed the pneumatic tyre in 1887 to help his son ride a tricycle more comfortably. He patented his design in 1888, however, two years later, he was officially informed that it was invalid as another Scottish inventor, Robert Thomson (1822-1873) had already patented the idea in France and the USA. Dunlop became one of the founders of the rubber company that still bears his name.

While Downpatrick wasn't the site of his famous invention, it was a formative period in his life, laying the foundation for his later achievements. His years there reflect his dedication to veterinary science and his early entrepreneurial spirit. John Dunlop is pictured here in old age, cycling through Belfast's Botanic Gardens.

🎆🐾 Fireworks & Pets: What You Need to Know 🐶🐱

Here at Downe Vets, we know fireworks can be fun for people—but they’re often frightening and even dangerous for our pets. As celebrations approach, here are some important tips to help keep your furry family members safe:

🔥 Keep Fireworks & Sparklers Away
Never let pets near fireworks, sparklers, or debris. These can cause burns, injuries, or toxic exposure if ingested.

🔊 Loud Noises Can Be Terrifying
Many pets experience anxiety from the sound of fireworks. Signs include shaking, hiding, barking, or trying to escape. Create a quiet, secure space indoors with familiar toys and blankets to help them feel safe.

🚪 Escape Risks Are Real
Scared pets may bolt through open doors or jump fences. Make sure your pet is microchipped and wearing a collar with up-to-date ID tags.

If you’re concerned about your pet’s reaction to fireworks, give us a call on 02844614225
We’re here to help you prepare and keep your pets safe and happy.
