How Dogs Learn 👇

Dogs learn through either association or consequence.

➡️ Association training is more commonly known as classical conditioning. This is where a dog learns that a certain action / noise / object will trigger another action / noise / object.

An example of this would be that the dog learns that when you pick up the lead, it’s walk time. Or if they hear a knock on the door, a visitor arrives. The key is that the dog doesn’t have to DO anything.

➡️ Consequence training is also known as operant conditoning. This is where the dog learns that an action they do will result in a (good or bad) consequence.

For example: Sit = treat. Dog jumps on counter = yummy sandwich Dog jumps at people = gets attention Dog barks = gets told off There are four quadrants of operant conditioning.

😃 POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT (R+) means that you will add something to encourage your dog to repeat that behaviour. Eg: Giving a dog a treat for sitting. This is a definite yes - use this lots!

😔 NEGATIVE REINFORCEMENT (R-) means that you’ll remove something to encourage your dog to do a behaviour again. Eg: a slip lead, which releases pressure when your dog stops pulling. I prefer not to use this at all, however a ome trainers will use this.

😣 POSITIVE PUNISHMENT (P+) means adding something to make a behaviour less likely to happen again. Eg: hitting your dog for barking. This is a definite NO and should never be used!

🙂 NEGATIVE PUNISHMENT (P-) means removing something to make a behaviour less likely to happen again. Eg: removing attention when your dog jumps up. This is normally used alongside R+.

“I can’t believe how much progress we’d make in such a short amount of time!”

“Everyone has noticed a huge change in her!”

~ Audrey’s mum was so happy with how much progress she’d seen since I last saw her! 🥳

And instead of going home with scratches like last time I visited this gorgeous puppy, I just had tons of cuddles and kisses instead! 🥰

It just goes to show when you put in the work, the difference you can make is amazing! Even for a 15 week old puppy! 🐶

I’m so proud of Audrey and her family!!

When I meet clients in person for the first time they often have preconceived notion about how I may judge them.😔

It breaks my heart - there is NOTHING to apologise for!💔

Be aware that I do NOT judge.

I'm here to be on your team. I am your ally. ❤️

I want you to succeed and regain tranquility in your life just as much as I want your dog to enjoy life too.😇😊

My dogs are not angels. I am not a magician. I am a human with some specially acquired skills.

Three behaviours you can easily teach your dog to make vet trips easy-peasy! 🐾

⭐️ Sit-stay

This is useful for in the waiting room, getting your dog to sit still on the scales, as well as for whilst the vet is preparing everything (they don’t want to be jumped up on!)

⭐️ Down

It is ideal for your dog to be as calm as possible whilst getting checked over. Lay Down will help!

⭐️ Target

Ask your dog to touch his nose to your hand and keep it there for fuss-free examinations. Simple and easy!

And most importantly: TAKE TREATS! 🐶

5 Tips I give every dog training client:

1️⃣ Prepare!

Your dog won’t want to work for you if they are hungry or need the toilet, so make sure they’re ready. Prepare the room to have no distractions, and prepare how you are going to train the behaviour.

2️⃣ Be patient!

Dogs are smart of course, but it’s easy to get frustrated when they don’t understand something. Be patient, and find ways to make it easier for them to understand!

3️⃣ Look for opportunities to reward good behaviour!

It’s so obvious when a dog does something you don’t want, but good behaviour is more subtle. I’d good behaviour isn’t rewarded, how will your dog know to do it again?

4️⃣ Have realistic expectations!

Training takes time, and it’s important to consider the breed you have and the effort you’re willing to put into training. For example, working breeds will need more mental stimulation, terriers will likely dig, shepherds will likely bark, and Labradors are naturally greedy! •

5️⃣ Avoid bribery!

If you use a treat to get a dog who’s not listening to listen, they’ll expect a treat every time! Rewards are crucial… But bribes are not good!

Let’s play a game! 😄

HOW WELL DOES YOUR DOG LISTEN TO YOU?👂

Choose a cue your dog knows really well (such as ‘sit’, ‘down’, or come’)

Each time your dog does their behaviour correctly, you get 1 point! ✅

🐶 Say your cue with a different vowel? (sit to sat, down to dawn)

🐶 Say your cue as a rhyme (sit to bit, come to sun)

🐶 Whisper your cue

🐶 Drag out the word (siiiiit, doowwwnn)

🐶 Shout the cue

🐶 Cover your hand over your mouth

🐶 Use the opposite hand for your hand signal

🐶Have your eyes closed when you ask

🐶 Have a glove on when you use your hand signal

🐶 Kneel down

🐶 Stand on a chair / sofa

🐶 Have your back to your dog.

🐶 Be in another room

🐶 Lay on the sofa

🐶 Do star jumps

For a total of 15 points, how many did you get?

What’s your dog-related goals for this year? ⭐️

Keeping on top of your goals is so important for success - and that goes for a simple dog training session, or your personal goals for the year!

Every training session I do, whether it be with my own pooch or with someone else’s, I set goals to achieve.

1️⃣So, this year, I am going to teach Molly some new fun tricks, as I’ve been a bit busy recently and haven’t had a huge amount of personal-training time 😢

2️⃣I am also going to get a couple of new online programs running for mucky pups! (One coming soon!!)

3️⃣And finally I am going to teach Molly to be my ring bearer! This I am super excited for! 🥳🐾

What are your goals for this year? 🐾 🐾

Quite often I meet dogs and their owners say phrases like “wow he’s never this confident with a stranger” 🤩 and “she’s never liked a new person before” 😳

I believe the reason for this is that I understand dog behaviour. 🐶

Perhaps I get more practise than other people, and maybe I notice more subtle behaviours, but there’s nothing magic about it. ✨

It’s simple communication, and you can do it too! 🫵

❓Have you ever wondered why I dog might shake off when they aren’t wet?

❓Have you ever thought your dog is trying to tell you something, but you don’t know what?

❓Have you often wished you could read your dog’s mind?

If you would like some more information about dog behaviour, I have the perfect e-book for you. 📕

If you’d like to teach your kids more about dog behaviour, I have the perfect solution for them too!👶👧🧒

5 things I wish every dog owner knew…

1️⃣ Socialisation isn’t all about dog-dog interactions, and it’s also not as simple as just introducing your dog to xy&z. Think about noises, objects, people, weathers, other animals. Socialisation is about learning that these things are safe, AND to be calm around them.

2️⃣ You can train out genetics. If you’ve got a Labrador, you can’t stop them being greedy. You can’t stop a border collie wanting to chase, or a terrier from wanting to dig. Yes you can reduce those behaviours (sometimes) and yes you can redirect them into chasing / digging / etc. the right thing. But they’re still going to want to do it, and if they don’t have the correct outlet, they will.

3️⃣ Ball throwing for hours on end is not healthy, no matter the age, breed, or temperament.

4️⃣ Training IS worth it! And it is especially worth it early on, whether they are a puppy or a rescue. The earlier you set your boundaries and reinforce good behaviour, the less likely bad habits will set in (that’s bad habits from you and your dog!)

5️⃣ Learn to read your dog’s body language, especially the subtle signs of stress and anxiety. In addition, teach this to all your family and friends, including children.

A rainy walk with Kevin today but it was SO wonderful to see how much he’s progressed! 🥳

Kevin is part of my Troublesome Teenagers to Perfect Pooches program!

He’s walking so well on lead instead of dragging his humans around! 🤩

On top of that, he’s listening much more too and becoming so much more focused on his humans, both in and out of the house!! ✅

Well done Kevin!! 🐾

🗺️ Where is Mucky Pups located?

I live in Driffield, but travel to Beverley, Hull, Bridlington, Market Weighton, Hornsea, and all the areas in between!

🐕 Do I do group classes?

I don’t continuously run group classes as I find people benefit much more from private sessions, but when I have group classes, i will advertise these on Facebook, instagram, and my website. Check out this blog post for more information: https://www.muckypups-dogtraining.com/post/private-training-vs-group-classes

💰 What do I charge?

I don’t charge per hour as my programs included a whole lot more than just our time together. My program costs vary depending on what you need help with. I offer a free discovery call so we can have a chat about the best solution for you and your dog. Book your call here: https://calendly.com/muckypupsdogtraining/free-discovery-call Check out this blog post for more information: https://www.muckypups-dogtraining.com/post/how-much-does-dog-training-cost

📝 Do I have a waiting list?

I don’t have a waiting list for training, however I do only accept a few clients per month. This is partly so that I have enough time to help everyone, but also so I can ensure we are a good fit for training. It is important that as well as me suiting you and your dog, you also need to be a good fit for me! That’s how we’ll make a great team and get the perfect results for you and your dog.

📞 How can I get in contact?

The easiest way is to follow this link to book a free call with me. Https://calendly.com/muckypupsdogtraining/free-discovery-call Otherwise, you can message me here on Facebook, instagram, or email ([email protected])

🐶 What type of dogs does Mucky Pups train?

All of them! I have trained dogs as young as 5 weeks old to over 19 years old! I've trained dogs as small as chihuahuas to as large as Great Danes, dogs as common as Labradors to as rare as a Stabyhoun, and dogs as friendly and fearful as you can imagine. My favourite thing about my job is the huge variety of dogs I get to meet.

👩🏼‍🎓 Why is Mucky Pups different from other trainers?

I am not just a trainer. I am also a dog behaviourist, which means that I have a degree in Animal Behaviour and Training. Not only am I fully qualified, but I have spent years and... well, lets just say I could have bought many fancy cars with the money I have spent (and continue to spend) to become the best possible dog behaviourist.
I also am proud to call myself a member of the Pet Professional Guild, which is the only international member association who advocate for force free dog training. I meet their very high professional standards and follow their code of ethics. I am compassionate, understanding, and design all my training to fit each individual (dog and owner's) needs.

📱 Why do I have to book a call? Can't I just book in?

It is really important to me that we are a good fit for training. Having a conversation over the phone allows me to ensure we get along well, our goals for your dog align, and my methods will work for your dog. I may also need to dive into a few questions about your dog's behaviour, and this is much easier done without backwards and forwards messaging.

📖 Does Mucky Pups have reviews I can read?

Yes! Most of my reviews are on my page, but there are also some on Google. I am proud of my reputation and encourgae you to scroll through my reviews to see how I can help you. Here’s a link to my Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/share/C6o49NjYMgdEhjWn/?mibextid=LQQJ4d

Mucky Pups Dog Training

Hi, I'm Hannah. I'm a qualified dog trainer and behaviourist who focuses on positive reinforcement style training – no punishments! This means that you’ll get happier, more motivated dogs who’ll be willing to listen to you because you’ll have such a great bond with them.

I’m fully qualified with a BSc (Hons) degree in Applied Animal Behaviour and Training, a Distinction (Triple Star Level) in Animal Management, and multiple human and animal first aid courses. My business is fully insured, and I assure you that I will work my absolute hardest with your dog, ensuring that you get the best care and results.

A bit about me...

I started my animal career studying Animal Management at Bishop Burton College. This is where I got to interact, handle, work with, and train many species of animals. I completed my work experience with RSPCA Hull, earning myself a voluntary position there too. After a year and a half, I was offered a job there.
