Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month is drawing to a close but the work our fantastic nurses do is continuous. ๐ Here's a snap shot of a day in the life of a Registered Veterinary Nurse!
From performing happy visits with anxious patients, to taking x-rays and blood tests, placing intravenous catheters, monitoring anaesthetic, scaling and polishing teeth, monitoring blood pressure, dispensing parasite control and much much more, our vet nurses really do a lot more than people believe! ๐ฉ๐ผโโ๏ธ๐
Thank you RVN's! ๐
๐จ From 10th June all cats in England legally will need to be microchipped by the time they're 5 months old. ๐จ
Microchipping helps to reunite you with your pet if they ever become lost! โ
Cats can be chipped in clinic with our nurses! โ
If you're on our Pet Health Club you can have this done FREE! ๐ธ
If you're not on our VIP plan (or have already used your voucher) you can get a ยฃ10 off discount if you book in before the deadline! ๐ธ
Here's gorgeous Oreo demonstrating how quick and easy microchipping is! ๐๐
Mango was thoroughly enjoying the post spay fusses yesterday! ๐ป Hopefully she's forgiven us for making her wear her recovery pet-shirt ๐ค๐ป๐
Have you ever seen a kitten use her little paws to eat treats?! Meet Mango! ๐ฅฒ
Vet Heather had the pleasure of health checking, vaccinating, providing parasite control & spoiling her with treats & fuss during her first ever vet visit recently! ๐งก
Practice pet Digby is springing into the weekend! ๐
He must have been extra busy in the office this week ๐ค Maybe watching the Puppy Party Wednesday evening has given him some ideas for the weekend ๐ Happy Friday everyone! We hope you are all able to spend some quality time with your pets ๐ฅณ

Did you know that Veterinary Nurses monitor your pets anaesthetics?
Veterinary Nurses monitor patients vital signs whilst they're having surgical and diagnostic procedures. They listen to heart beats & rhythms, they count respirations and monitor the depth & effort of each breath, they monitor mucus membrane colours, capillary refill times, eye positions & pupil responses, they monitor jaw tone and temperatures and they use multi-parameter monitors to check ECG, CO2, blood oxygen levels and blood pressure.
They monitor patients for signs of pain under anaesthetic and can administer medications under the vets direction. They also pre-oxygenate and pre-warm patients to prepare them for surgery.
They are the eyes, ears and hands for the Veterinary Surgeon and they are the voice and advocate for your pets.
Anaesthesia is a fine art and Nurses are best placed to ensure your pet has a smooth process by having in-depth knowledge of normal species parameters (for multiple species!), being able to preempt and predict changes and having excellent communication skills to relay these messages to the Vet.
Throughout May we've been sharing snippets of some of the amazing work our Veterinary Nurses at Bridge Street do. We hope you've enjoyed them and that you've learnt something new about the varied and skilled role of our Registered Veterinary Nurses! ๐
Nurses do so many things throughout the Practice that it's impossible to show you everything. They are involved in clipping and cleaning patients for surgery, setting up theatre, sterilising and preparing surgical instruments, keeping clinical areas free of infection, controlling stock levels, caring for wildlife, dispensing medication, creating education boards and discussing ways to improve patient care.
When emergencies happen, they are on standby to provide first aid and CPR. When it's time to say good bye, they are there in your pets final moments to support them and

Did you know that Vet Nurses are the ones who prominently care for your pets whilst they're in our clinic?
Veterinary Nurses monitor your pets vital signs whilst recovering from anaesthetic (this includes heart rate/rhythm, respiratory rate, mucus membrane colour, capillary refill time, pain scores, temperature, wound management, demeanor), they feed and water them, they exercise them, they reduce stress (they play classical music, plug in calming diffusers, give hides and perches, hide anxious pets and give extra companionship for those who don't like to be alone), they give medication and they ensure they get home to you as soon as they're able.
Our nurses love providing TLC to all patients in our care โค๏ธ Here's a video of the very adorable Luna, Meg, Zelda, Stevie and Alice.

๐ Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month ๐
Did you know that Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVN) are able to perform minor surgeries?
They are able to remove superficial lumps, suture open wounds (like the one photographed), place surgical drains, scale and polish teeth, suture gums and even perform amputations!
Here's RVN Kelsey stitching up an open wound on little Rosie.
A common misconception we hear often is that Vet Nurses wish to become Vets. Being a Veterinary Nurse is a rewarding and exciting profession in its own right. (Just like within human medicine). The knowledge and skills our RVN learn and possess far exceed what they are known for. They don't just nurse one species or have one field of expertise, they learn and excel in multiple aspects of the care, treatment, diagnostic work and life saving of pets on a daily basis! ๐ฅณ

Did you know that Veterinary Nurses place, monitor and manage intravenous catheters?!
I/V catheters give us the ability to administer medications, fluids and provide a safe entry to our patients blood stream in an emergency.
Here's a clip of Lyuba placing an I/V catheter and Charlotte reassuring and praising brave little Zelda throughout the procedure ๐ What a superstar patient Zelda last week ๐โค๏ธ
We hope you're having a lovely bank holiday weekend ๐ฅณ

Come behind the scenes with us! ๐
On this practice tour you can see...
๐Our large open prep area - this is where patients are clipped and cleaned for surgery, where pre-anaesthetic blood samples are taken and where we anaesthetise our surgical patients.
๐Our designated dental area - where patients have their scale & polish and teeth extractions.
๐Our private enclosed dog ward - dogs have their own separate room where classical music is played and pet remedy plug-ins are used. The vets can sometimes be scary for dogs, which is why our kennels do not face each other to avoid feelings of insecurity or reactivity for those dogs who don't like their own kind.
๐Our private cat ward - being a cat friendly clinic, we believe our feline patients deserve the best and that's why they have their own ward at the opposite end of the practice to our dog ward. They have large kennels that restrict any patients being able to see each other, soft cozy bedding & a hide and perching place! We go the extra mile to ensure cats feel calm, classical music and feliway help promote this! As well as assessing individuals behaviour to ensure they have the ability to hide if they're nervous or be able to see out if they're curious.
๐Our private isolation ward - this is where poorly patients are hospitalised when they may be potentially infectious to other pets or to people!
๐Our large theatre - our well lit theatre is always ready for routine surgeries and emergencies. We do all our operations in this theatre Monday to Friday 9am to 1.30pm.
๐Our radiography suite - we have ultrasound scanning equipment, in-house x-ray and new for Spring 2023 dental x-raying equipment. These diagnostic tools help vets investigate and diagnose numerous conditions!
๐Our in-house laboratory - where vets and nurses can test blood samples and analyse urine, ear smears and blood smears! These in-house facilities help get you results the same day! We also have an external laborat

Practice pets Axel, Chester, Digby, Peggy and Rhum all had a great time at the local enclosed dog park this weekend! ๐
We were lucky the weather was very mild and breezy but please remember to be extra careful during hotter periods!
๐ธTry to exercise your dog first thing in the morning and last thing at night when the day's at its coolest.
๐ธProvide plenty of fresh water, breaks from playing/running/fetch and ensure they stay cool in the shade.
๐ธCool mats are great to have in your car for their journey home.
๐ธIf your pet does become overheated, wet a towel with cool water and place over them to gradually bring their temperature down.
Heat stroke can be very serious, if you become concerned about your pet struggling in the heat, please call to see one of our vets.
We hope you're all having as much fun as these crazy dogs this weekend!
Dydd Gลตyl Dewi Hapus! Happy St David's Day! Are you celebrating today?
IT'S PANCAKE DAY! How excited are you?!
Your dogโs annual injections include vaccination against parvo, so itโs vital to keep these up to protect your pet against this serious infection. Puppies can be vaccinated against canine parvovirus from around six weeks old. As well as protecting your dog or puppy against this nasty and potentially serious disease, regular vaccination is required by kennels and pet insurers as a condition of cover. Read our article to find out more . . . https://www.myfamilyvets.co.uk/common-questions-about-puppy-vaccinations
Happy Valentine's Day to all our wonderful pet owners!
