Post-Mortem Examinations

PMEs are an extremely helpful diagnostic tool. They allow us to visualise, examine and sample all internal organs, some of which would be impossible in a living animal.

PMEs allow us to give a definitive diagnosis, and then advise on the best preventative treatment for the rest of your livestock.

We’re entering high risk pneumonia weather, sampling the lungs from an affected calf gives the most sensitive and reliable result for what bacteria/virus has caused the pneumonia. Knowing the pathogen involved means we can pick the most appropriate vaccine going forward and advise on the best course of treatment.

Bluetongue Update

Following the identification of further bluetongue BTV-3 cases close to the edge of the Restricted Zones (RZs), the two RZs have now been merged and extended.

Keepers of cattle, sheep, camelids and other ruminants must remain vigilant, report any suspicion of bluetongue immediately and follow the restrictions on animal and germinal product movements that apply.

Defra’s Secretary of State has permitted the use of 3 unauthorised bluetongue serotype 3 (BTV-3) vaccines within the United Kingdom, subject to licence.

Unlike the authorised vaccines for other BTV serotypes, the BTV-3 vaccines claim to reduce viraemia rather than prevent it. This means they may not prevent your animals from being infected or infectious, but (depending on the vaccine) their claims include reduction or prevention of clinical signs experienced or mortality.

For this reason, all movement controls and trade restrictions still apply to vaccinated animals. You should not test vaccinated animals as part of a pre-movement test in bluetongue zones until 7 days after their vaccination. This will prevent interference with BTV-3 monitoring.

We had a very busy day yesterday at Hanbury Countryside Show.

We love seeing everyone and getting to catch up over a brew and a piece of cake. Thank you for all your donations, the money raised will go to a local animal charity and The Farming Community Network.

A quick shout out to some of our staff for all their help and support in their areas of the show:

- Gill for being cattle secretary, a massive commitment that she makes look easy.

- George for being poultry secretary, his hard work was definitely appreciated, his tent was one of the busiest on the show ground.

- Ollie and Becca for being the official on site vets, they made sure the livestock and horses were safe and healthy throughout the day.

- Jo for running the dog show, this section is always incredibly popular and brings so much fun and energy.

- Jade, Maggie, Vlad, Sophie, Kim, Chloe, Jonny, Martha, Will, Abbie and Dinke for making brews, serving cakes, treating animals and just generally doing whatever jobs needed to be done.

🪱🥚FEC/WEC🥚🪱

FEC = faecal egg count
WEC = worm egg count

We use these terms interchangeably when referring to testing faeces for parasites eggs. This allows us to assess the intestinal parasite burden in your livestock and advise on appropriate treatment and management.

Why should we test for internal parasites?

🪱 🥚 the result tells us whether we need to treat and can help pick the most suitable product. Eg. A sample containing only nemotodirus battus would be treated with a white wormer.

🪱🥚 testing after a treatment will tell us if there is wormer resistance on your farm. This in an increasing problem due to blanket worming throughout the grazing period. Save yourself time and effort, STOP BLANKET WORMING!

🪱🥚 it can show us the burden of the pasture and inform pasture rotation.

To collect useful samples make sure you collect fresh droppings, these could be individual or pooled samples. Once collected keep in a cool place (fridge is best) and drop into the practice ASAP. If left out in the warm the eggs could hatch out and therefore result in a negative test even when there is a parasite burden.

📞 If you would like any advice regarding parasite testing or treatment please ring the office on 01905 773262, or contact your routine vet. 📞
