As the temperature is set to rise tomorrow, remember to keep your dog cool. Don’t exercise them in the hottest parts of the day, and watch out for signs of heatstroke.

Some good advice from the PDSA now its BBQ season 🐾

As much as we all enjoy making the most of the warm weather with a barbeque, it’s important to remember our furry friends too 🐾

Every year, our veterinary teams see pets that have got into a spot of accidental bother at a barbeque!

From heatstroke and sunburn to bin raids and broken glass, there are lots of hazards for pet owners to be mindful of ⚠️

[Visual description: An infographic explaining BBQ safety for pet owners. Tips include: 1) Secure the garden - Ensure your garden is secure and safe for pets by making sure all fences are robust and there aren’t any dangerous plants for them to reach. 2) Create a quiet space to de-stress - Set up a quiet room inside the house or in your garden where your pet can retreat. This space should be for your pets only, not your guests. 3) Beware of flamin' hot equipment - Hot food, coals and ashes can all cause serious burns. Once the cooking is complete, make sure the barbecue cools down properly. 4) Breathe easy - Smoke can be irritating for pets’ lungs, especially as many have sensitive airways. Make sure they are far away from the barbecue and not downwind of any fumes. 5) Skip the scraps - Barbecue scraps can upset your pet's stomach and undercooked or fatty foods can make them very poorly. Remember to dispose of any leftover bones or corn cobs safely and securely. 6) Keep cool and be sensible in the sun - On warmer days, make sure your pet has a shady space where they can cool down. Remember to also apply pet-safe sunblock to your furry friend at least 15 minutes before they go outside. 7) Treat them too - Prepare a pet-safe snack to keep them entertained.]

Happy Easter!! 🐥
Diamond Dogs Academy wishes everyone a fantastic Easter break 🐾
As we love chocolate, human chocolate does not love our pups. A general rule, the darker the chocolate, the more cocoa solids/theobromine it will contain and the more toxic it’s likely to be. However, even chocolate with less cocoa solids can be toxic if enough is eaten. Although white chocolate doesn’t contain any cocoa solids (so toxicity isn’t a risk), it does contain a lot of fat and sugar, which can cause stomach upsets and in severe cases, pancreatitis. Cocoa powder is especially toxic because it contains an extremely high concentration of cocoa solids.
You can still celebrate the Easter holidays by purchasing dog friendly chocolate 🍫 from your local pet store.

Here is some useful information from the PDSA

This is something everyone should see. This xray is of a 2 week old puppy.

When you get your 8/10 week old puppies, please keep this image in mind. Their bones do not even touch yet. They plod around so cutely with big floppy paws and wobbly movement because their joints are entirely made up of muscle, tendons, ligaments with skin covering. Nothing is fitting tightly together or has a true socket yet.

When you run them excessively or don't restrict their exercise to stop them from overdoing it during this period you don't give them a chance to grow properly. Every big jump or excited bouncing run causes impacts between the bones. In reasonable amounts this is not problematic and is the normal wear and tear that every animal will engage in.

But when you're letting puppy jump up and down off the lounge or bed, take them for long walks/hikes, you are damaging that forming joint. When you let the puppy scramble on tile with no traction you are damaging the joint.

You only get the chance to grow them once. A well built body is something that comes from excellent breeding and a great upbringing-BOTH, not just one.

Once grown - around 12-18 months depending on their breed, you will have the rest of their life to spend playing and engaging in higher impact exercise. So keep it calm while they're still little baby puppies and give the gift that can only be given once.

Treasured pets now safer as microchipping for cats becomes compulsory
New legislation
The new rules mean cats must be implanted with a microchip before they reach the age of 20 weeks and their contact details stored and kept up to date in a pet microchipping database. All owners must have their cat microchipped by 10 June 2024 and owners found not to have microchipped their cat will have 21 days to have one implanted, or may face a fine of up to £500.

New legislation laid in Parliament today introducing mandatory cat microchipping

Such a relief for all, especially the owners and Ruth herself.
The Black & Tan Coonhound 'Ruth' has been reunited with her owner Krizia who slipped her collar on Sunday at crufts outside.
Today, Tuesday, now reunited.
Ruth must of been so worried herself, as seen running on roads, motorways, her owner flew straight from Italy too help find her.
Drones and updates helped track her as Ruth was in a panic.
Thank you too all who have helped with everything.
Accidents do happen. This is also a good reminder to all to ensure our precious pups have the correct equipment on and the equipment is comfortably and safely secure for the safety of our precious ones.

As an exhibitor of Crufts, people often ask me about the day.
Last year, I made a little video of Crufts to show people our day.

To gain entry to exhibit at Crufts, you need to have been qualified at a champion dog show.

This day last year is highly likely to be Nukka's last time at Crufts, as she was 11 years old ( Now 12 years old)
Nukka thoroughly enjoys showing.

Her class that she could enter on that day was bi***es from 7 years, so for Nukka to gain 4th place was quite an amazing achievement for her age.

I have been handling dogs at shows since 2008, not just my own but many others for other owners.
It's a huge enjoyment for myself and team working with dogs I handle, as they also enjoy the day.

With showing, it's not just about the turn-up and going into the show ring.
It's about the time spent building a bond and partnership with the dog you are handling.
The hours of training.
The hours of full grooming are weeks before prepping and the day before being ready for the final day.
The hours of travelling.
Ensuring you have all necessary equipment and items for both yourself and your dog. Pulling it along on your grooming trolly to where you are benched for the day ( Which can end up being not only a distance but extremely heavy as it is filled with crates, water barrels and most likely a week's worth of dog things you may not even use!)
Ensuring your dog's welfare needs are met thoroughly throughout the day.
Arriving early and getting home late.
The most important thing is to spend time and enjoy time with your dog.

It doesn't matter if you do not get placement on the day.
It's the time, memories and enjoyment that you spend with your dog, which is the highest award you can ever go home with.

Yes, yes, and yes! Working with animals comes with a HUGE amount of responsibility. It doesn’t matter if you’re a groomer, boarder, house sitter, walker, veterinary care assistant, veterinary nurse, veterinary receptionist, veterinary surgeon, cat sitter, hydrotherapist, physiotherapist, holistic therapist, I know I’ve not included everyone and please do not take that personally! As you are ALL so very very important to the health, welfare, and wellbeing of our pets.

Your job, whatever your role, plays a massive part in that pets life. It is not a hobby, it is not an easy option, it is a choice, a vocation, a calling to care for pets who are often the most important part of somebodies life! That means you have to do your best and be your best by learning as much as you can, and realising that you should never be undervalued.

In many people’s lives their pets are one of the most important, sometime the most important. Your work, your care, your dedication, is worth everything.

So the next time someone thinks your job is just cuddling animals, remember this post. Cuddling is lovely, but your job is so much more than that ❤️
