The Happy Hounds House

The Happy Hounds House The kinder, more personal alternative to kennels, where your dog is cared for in our home.

Fully licensed by NEDDC and with over 20 years experience, you can relax and enjoy your holiday/break, knowing that your beloved family dog is enjoying a holiday of their own in a home away from home. We aim to maintain their usual feeding and walking routine to minimise any stress, and being in Derbyshire we have some fabulous walks available to us. We can do the big hikes, or the little round t

he block walks, depending on the age and agility of your dog. You can find lots of photos and videos of the dogs having fun or lazing around the house, which of course will ease your mind if you can see them whilst you are away. The Happy Hounds House really is the perfect holiday home for your much loved family pet!

GREAT facility!!

Is your dog reactive, anxious, fearful? 🙈 Or do they have poor recall? 🤪 Do they need a place to practise further training, or have a playdate with their other doggy friends??♥️

Look no further!🫢

We offer a 1 acre grassy field, secure, with lovely views of the surrounding fields and Old Whittington! 🌿

We also offer a sandbased free run arena for clean feet and to avoid any pesky grass allergies (p.s there’s even a lovely covered shady rest area!)🐩

If you’d like your dog to look as happy as the one below, don’t hesitate to get in touch. 🫶🏻🐕🐾

Yet another outstanding meal at Ferdinando's Eatalian Ristorante and takeaway to finish off our two weeks off! If you haven’t been yet, YOU MUST!!! The food is consistently fabulous, the new house red 🍷 is delicious, and who doesn’t love a half price pizza/pasta Sunday! (Booking is ESSENTIAL if you want to get in!)
Always a warm and sincere welcome from long-time waiter Marcus, who is worth his weight in gold and makes every customer feel like an old friend, which only enhances the great atmosphere. LOVE LOVE LOVE this place!❤️❤️❤️

I have put my heart and soul into this business for so long, and it has rewarded me tenfold with all the wonderful doggos and their loving families that have come into my life.
The joy is SO real.
But the heartache is…….. I can’t even find the words right now.💔
Last month we lost the lovely, fun loving, bundle of love, Lucas to cancer, the beautiful cocker who quickly became Monty Bigfoot’s ‘brother from another mother’, they were like a pair of bookends that just loved each other as soon as they met.

Then this morning, the gentle, sensitive and precious soul, Sonny, let his mum and dad know that it was time to say goodbye, another family, with that most difficult of decisions to have to make.
How can our final act of kindness be so utterly devastating.💔

I’ll never forget these beautiful boys. We let them share our lives, and our hearts, knowing the inevitable pain that all those years of love and happiness will leave us with.
My heart goes out to their families, and my heartfelt gratitude, as always, for letting me share my life with them too.❤️💔❤️💔

So well written, hope it gives some people food for thought.

So well written, hope it gives some people food for thought.

I've swithered about the wisdom of posting this for fear of backlash but I keep coming back to these questions and I think they are important so here goes nothing...

I was working in the park yesterday and saw things which, if I'm honest, kind of broke my heart a wee bit. A beautiful puppy on a slip lead being corrected (by a 'trainer') whenever they stopped to sniff. An obedience class of dogs half of whom appeared to be on 'grot' collars (choke collars). A dog being walked on a prong collar in a strict heel and never allowed to stop, sniff or interact with the world around them.

So my questions are...

What has happened in our relationship with our dogs that makes more and more people feel ok about training their dogs with force & coercion & discomfort/pain?

Do people believe these things don't hurt? That the dog truly doesn't mind? Or do they acknowledge that these things are unpleasant (at best...painful at worst) but believe this is the only way to teach dogs? Do they understand what they are doing but feel there are no other options? Is the dog's discomfort simply a price worth paying for the human's convenience? Has frequent exposure to coercive trainers on social media numbed us to the casual cruelty with which they treat dogs? Or do we just avoid thinking about it all too deeply for fear we may have to face some uncomfortable truths?

Where is our empathy, kindness and understanding for the captive animals we have chosen to bring into our lives? If we truly care about our dogs (and I believe most owners do) then why are we often so quick to use physical force & discomfort? If we are prepared to sacrifice their wellbeing and experience in favour of our control over them - and it's worth saying these are not mutually exclusive - then we have some serious reflecting to do....

Amazing dog professionals learn continuously. We know the gaps in our knowledge and we go to the journals, to the books and to the science to keep filling them. Please if you're on this journey - keep learning. If you're looking for help with your dog, choose carefully. Dogs need to be cherished, respected, cared for, understood and empathised with.

💔 “Please adopt me” 💔

Edina, along with some of her other friends at the Sanctuary, are still waiting for their forever homes😭 We really just can’t understand why🥺

Kennels are extremely full and most are over capacity, with calls flooding in each and every day. We cannot help other dogs, if the ones we already have aren’t being adopted💔 Your decision to adopt will not only save your new dog, but it also creates a space for another animal in need🤞🏼

“The sadness we feel looking into the kennels is nothing compared to the sadness they must feel when looking out”🥺

After 15 fabulous years as a 5* licensed home boarder, I am slowly making the transition, for the rest of this year, over to cat visits in the owner’s home to cover long days out or holidays, and pet pop-ins for owners out at work etc.
https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61560564094126

Then, when I have wrapped up the last of my 2024 home boarding commitments, I will be offering house sits to take care of pets in their own home while you go away, giving the additional benefit of having your home securely taken care of and kept tidy, post collected, plants watered, and dogs/cats/pets remaining in their own home.

This will be of particular benefit to those pets that might be reactive or anxious in unfamiliar surroundings, or are not happy around other dogs, to those with separation anxiety, or to families with multiple pets that can all stay together in their own home environment.

As well as being a HUGE animal lover, with a wealth of experience, I am also DBS checked, fully insured, and qualified in Canine First Aid. My current clients will be more than happy to provide references, or you can read the reviews on my home boarding page Happy Hounds House.

Feel free to get in touch and have a chat about your pet needs, and the services that I can offer to ensure you can have total peace of mind when you need to be away from home.

Many of you may already know me from my many years of 5* Licensed home dog boarding as The Happy Hounds House.

I am now venturing into the world of cats and small pets too under the name Happy Paws & Claws. I will provide pop-in services to care for your pets in your own home while you may be away on holiday or just out for a long day.

Pet Services include once or twice daily visits for the following:

Replenishing food and water for dogs, cats, fish, caged birds, chickens, hamsters and other small furries.
Daily cleaning out of litter trays and any necessary disinfection.
Brushing/grooming of cats/dogs.
Providing your pets with love and affection, as well as any necessary stimulation through play.

Free of Charge Additional services include:
Clearing of post/newspapers.
Putting out/bringing in refuse/recycling bins.
Watering of plants.
Opening and Closing of Curtains, and anything else that makes it less obvious that you are away from home.

In addition to the pop-in services this year, I will then be in a position to offer live-in house-sits from 2025, to look after your property and your dogs/cats/pets when you go away for any length of time, and require the additional overnight cover. Daily rates for this will depend on number of pets and which services/duties will be required.

I hope to see lots of my old furry friends, as well as making many (and varied!) new ones along the way. 🐾 🐈 🐕 🐟 🐓 🐹 ❤️
