🌰 Conker season is here...

As autumn arrives, conkers (horse chestnuts) start falling, and while they might seem like fun toys for your pets, they can be dangerous! ⚠️

👉 Toxicity: Conkers contain a chemical called aesculin, which is toxic to dogs and other pets if ingested. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain.

👉 Choking hazard: Their size and shape make them a choking risk or cause intestinal blockages.

🚫 Prevent accidents: Keep an eye on your pets during walks and in the garden, and make sure to remove any conkers they might find.

🐾 If your pet ingests a conker, contact us, your vet, or the nearest vet immediately!

We did it! 💪 Tough Mudder complete!

We're a tough lot here at Blacks, and we proved it this weekend! 🎉 Twelve of our team members successfully conquered the Tough Mudder UK challenge in Birmingham, raising money for the mental health charity Mind.

On Saturday 7 September, at Ragley Estate, Warwickshire, we tackled a gruelling five-mile course with 15 intense obstacles, including crawling through mud under barbed wire, scaling walls, building human towers, and even enduring an ice bath and electric shocks! It was incredibly challenging, but we pulled through as a team and had an unforgettable experience. 💦🙌

We completed the course in 3 hours and 15 minutes and couldn't be prouder of our efforts!

This year, our amazing team took on a special project at a local nursing home, Netherton Green Nursing Home - Advinia Health Care, helping to restore their beautiful outdoor spaces! After the home lost their gardener, the gardens had become overgrown and difficult to manage. We stepped in to give one of their community gardens a much-needed makeover!

Our Green Team worked hard to:
💚🌿 W**d and tidy up the area
💚 🌸 Plant fresh flowers
💚🌿 Lay new gravel pathways

The result? A beautiful, refreshed garden for the residents and staff to enjoy.

It was a rewarding experience, and we're so proud to have made a positive impact on the local community! 😊

Meet Meg 😊

Meg is the oldest patient we have ever treated with chemotherapy at Blacks Vets. Meg is a 14 year wise lovely Springer Spaniel, who was diagnosed with digit osteosarcoma in January 2024.
Following amputation, Meg was treated at our Dudley hospital with a course of an injectable chemotherapy drug called carboplatin.

Meg was always happy to come in for her treatments and she experienced no side effects. We were thrilled to celebrate the end of her treatment with a very well-deserved pawty! You’ll be glad to hear that Meg remains well and happily enjoys her retirement.

Meg is living proof that there is no age limit for successful outcomes 😊

Creating a safe space for your pet during stressful events like fireworks can help them feel secure and reduce anxiety.

Here's how you can set up a cosy, calming environment for your pet:

✔️Select a room in your home that is farthest from the noise or an interior room
✔️Ensure the area is away from heavy foot traffic and other pets that might disturb your pet.
✔️ Place your pet's favourite bed or blanket in the space to provide comfort and familiarity.
✔️ Include a few of your pet's favourite toys to help them feel more at ease.
✔️Close all curtains or blinds to block out flashing lights from fireworks.
✔️Use treat-dispensing or puzzle toys to keep your pet occupied and distracted from the noise.
✔️Consider offering long-lasting chews or their favourite treats to create positive associations with the space.
✔️Plug in a pheromone diffuser in a safe space to release calming scents that can reduce anxiety.
✔️Anxiety coats or calming vests can help your pet feel more secure.
✔️Keep the door to the safe space open so your pet can enter and leave as they wish.
✔️Make sure they have easy access to water.
✔️Let your pet get used to this space before fireworks or an upcoming event.

🎇🎆 Fireworks can be very stressful for pets, and with events like Halloween, Bonfire Night, Diwali, and New Year's Eve coming up, it's important to prepare early to keep your pet calm and safe.

🎪 Create a safe space:
Set up a quiet, comfortable area in your home where your pet can retreat during fireworks. Make it cosy with their favourite bedding, toys, and even a piece of clothing that smells like you.

🔊 Get them used to noise and loud bangs:
Start playing fireworks sounds at a low volume weeks before the events. Gradually increase the volume over time, and reward your pet with treats or playtime to help them associate the sounds with something positive.

🥰 Keep things calm:
On the night of the fireworks, close curtains to block out flashes and play calming music or turn on the TV to help drown out the noise. Your calm presence will also help soothe your pet.

🔌 Use calming products:
Consider using calming aids like pheromone diffusers or anxiety wraps. Speak with your vet to find the best option for your pet.

🏡 Keep them indoors:
To keep your pet safe, keep them indoors during fireworks. Close all doors, windows, and pet flaps securely. If your dog needs to go out, do it before the fireworks start.

🔒 Update ID and microchip info:
Ensure your pet's ID tags and microchip information are up-to-date, just in case they manage to escape.
