We won't be doing any more Day Rides to Tarr Steps until the spring as the winter days are so short and the river can become too difficult to cross.

But, we are still open all year round for riding and Tarr Farm Inn Ltd is open for lunches, teas and evening meals if you want to drive there to eat before or after your ride, for a special day out.

Our half hour pony experience is perfect for smaller children who would like to try riding a pony for the first time or are keen to get closer to a pony, but not sure if they can manage a longer ride. It's a great way for kids to try horse riding with no pressure, to see if they would like to ride for longer next time. All riders are escorted on the leading rein by our experienced and knowledgeable staff and receive a special Pine Lodge rosette afterwards.

Throwback to *ahem* sunny August and some of our Pine Lodge faves setting off for a ride. We’ve been so grateful for the glorious sunshine this week on the farm. Autumn really is one of the best times to come for a ride, listening to bolving stags as the colours of the turning leaves reflect on the river Barle. And all the flies have buzzed off!

Tomorrow is Exmoor Day, the 70th anniversary of Exmoor National Park and the 75th anniversary of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. Exmoor has officially been a National Park since 19 October 1954. The National Park have some great suggestions on how to celebrate on their website (see below) but we're pretty sure that the best thing you can do is get out and explore our special landscape on horseback!

What's your favourite thing about Exmoor?

Exmoor National Park celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2024, having been designated a National Park in 1954. Find out all that is being done to celebrate.

One thing you are almost certain to see if you ride or stay with us at Pine Lodge is wild Red Deer. There are around 3,500 of them living on Exmoor along with about 500 Roe Deer. We have several herds living on our land and at this time of year you can hear them bolving - where they make loud bellowing noises in order to attract a mate.

Exmoor used to be home to the World Bolving Championships where people gathered to imitate the deer - but sadly this event seems to have fallen out of favour locally - time for a revival perhaps? Who's up for a spot of bolving? 🤔

The Horses House is a converted stone barn situated on our stable yard. It was originally used to house the heavy horses that worked on the farm. It sleeps up to 7 people and features an ‘upside down layout’ with a large, open plan living area upstairs, with lounge, day bed, double sofa bed and dining area and kitchen. The cottage is dog-friendly and we have some availability this October, perfect for a cosy autumnal Exmoor break? Horse riding is optional but always recommended!
