My pride and joy. My perfect (imperfect) crazy dog. Notice, absolutely zero latency on her recall, she comes immediately when called. Also, because we maximise use of reinforcers and I always let her know when she's free to go, she doesn't immediately run back to continue her sniffing, but hangs around 😍👌

DO NO HARM!!

I rarely comment on what others do. But today I came across this post in my feed.

First I thought this was a joke, who wrote these:
Dog is Perfect For You"? "Don't feed your dog from a bow!".
🛑This is not only ridiculous, outdated but also potentially harmful to the animal and the relationship between human and the animal.🛑

We are in the XXI century DunbarAcademy. Time to refresh your methods and learn more about positive reinforcement training.

People used to think that raising children should involve punishment (often physical). Following the science we now bring our children up in spirit of support and encouragement. It's time we extended the same courtesy to our dogs. After all, we all say dogs are part of the family.
Dogs learn the same way as our children. If you want your dog to be the perfect dog you've always wanted, this is where to start.

Verbal reprimands such as "No!" And "Ah-ah!" Are also negative stimuli - they suppress behaviour as application of positive punishment.

This adds tension and is a common cause of frustration, which is often transferred to other behavioural outlets such as destructive behaviours or excessive barking etc.

To communicate, dogs use mainly body language and their rate of getting a message across is much higher than with us humans, who have a luxury of verbal communication skills (well some are better than others). So why not start using body language to communicate with our dogs as well? I find that my dogs are more likely to understand me when I use my hands or body to speak to them. The common misconception is that the dog is naughty, stubborn and simply won't listen, when we give them those well taught commands or cues. But what if they don’t understand you? The cue you used when you delivered a fun, exciting training sesh for your dog is spoken completely different, now you are stressed, as your dog is pulling like a horse desperate to say hello to another dog? Words have very little meaning to the dog, but the tone does. Better still, they will get you each time if you use your body to communicate. Granted, not always possible. But here's a thought. You go to Spain, Italy, France – you will learn how to say ‘hello’, ‘thank you’, ‘bill please’ in their language, am I right? Does this help build a rapport with locals? Hell, yes! Well, why not try and learn a few things in dog and show your best friend how much you care thus building a stronger relationship. Good start is a book by Turid Rugaas ‘On talking terms with dogs: Calming signals’. Have a wee read....your dog will thank you for it.

PS Call me crazy, but one day, this book will be a mandatory reading in schools...the sooner the better.

Did you know that dogs living independently from humans and have to take care of their own food take up to 90 minutes to finish their meal? I bet this is a fracture of the time your dog takes to finish theirs :) There are ways to help your dog make a real meal out of their dinner. You can use lick mats, snaffle mats, kongs, slow feeders, scatter the food in your garden for them to find, hide bits of kibble under up side down empty plastic pots in your garden...use your imagination! In return you will get a satisfied, happy and tired (don't we all like that :)) doggy! Have a great day all, and remember to find one way to enrich your dog's life each day. They will love you for it!

Car broke down and we couldn't have a big walk anywhere exciting today. Instead, walk in the local park and now the girls are enjoying looking for meat bits in the garden. This will tire them out real nice! Enrichment at its best 👌😊🐶🐶

I (or rather my dog) had been a victim of dominant theory. Luckily, I woke up soon enough and changed to positive training. Most people in today's dogs world know their dog is not trying to dominate them or other dogs in their household. But we still tend to compare dogs to wolfs. The actual dog's origin is not 100% confirmed, but consider this. We all have seen stray dogs roaming streets of the countries with poor animal welfare regulations, when on holidays. These dogs are back to the nature, with no human to tell them what to do, feed them, offer shelter. Did anyone see them forming packs with a leader or hunting for food? I have not. All I have seen was individual dogs hanging around human settlements/restaurants because this is where food was. Dogs have not been hunters for thousands of years, instead they were scavengers. They primarily need a human for company, not other dogs, they don't need to chase the ball like it was prey and they for sure, do not need to be pack leaders. What they need is to be able to use their nose to look for stuff. This is why scent work is so much more beneficial to your dog than any other form of training. Classes coming to Pup-side-down soon!
Have a great day everyone 😊
