It can sometimes feel overwhelming focusing on the end goal when you have so much you want to work on.

For me, Drifty’s recall needs a boost! Whilst I’m doing this he won’t have much time with the other dogs as he has a lot of value to them and not me at the minute! Your turn- what are you going to do?

It’s been nearly a week since my mini surgery and I can withstand being on the bike again! 🤩
This is such an easy way to exercise the dogs especially how I’m not up to walking them far at the minute.

He’s only just learnt to wrap- what a good puppy! 😍
It’s been 1 week now since I’ve decided to put Aurora’s agility competitions on hold. This has been quite hard and an unexpected delay in her agility journey!
Why? 🫤
I was at a show last weekend, a great show, lovely courses and I was super excited to run my spaniel. She’s got a jumping win all I needed was an agility win and we would be chasing the small novice cups!
Buuut after her increasing nervousness and displacement running up to the show I should of known better. Aurora is becoming increasingly nervous with every heat she is having and she’s struggling with various environments including the agility environment. On one of her runs she ran out of the ring and would not come back to me. This is a huge tell in a dog and is screaming that they are not ready for competitions. Until she has found a greater love for jumping, some more confidence, taking the pressure off and generally enjoying the agility environment she won’t be competing. You don’t want to rehearse this behaviour!
It is not right to run a dog in agility who will run out of the ring both for her and other competitors! Dogs aren’t dick heads, their behaviour is their way of communicating with us!!
I will be adding some videos onto my agility section on my online academy to document Aurora’s journey. From running out of the ring to hopefully enjoying agility at some point in the future. After all we just want our dogs to be happy and confident!! 😍
For now if you are struggling with your agility dog with either confidence, focus or drive- grow your relationship, grow play in different environments and most importantly take all the pressure off training! 🤩😍

Growing a positive relationship with your dog & rewarding great choices that your puppy makes is so so important 😍
I often grab a small handful of kibble and play some recall and focus games! I don’t do typical training sessions.
Here I’m waiting for the washing machine to end. I decided to do a few reps of middle to boost Drifty’s recall! Then walking back to the house we did a few bits of loose lead walking!
Training sessions should be a fun time not a long time!

My girls did so well! Really happy with them. River was on 🔥 and Little A is coming on nicely.
Jump skills and discrimination is on the plan now (I’ve ruined my tight turns with Roo last season and A need more focus on them)
What a weekend! 🤩
Aurora had her first competition and won her jumping class!
Tide was back from injury & a lot of training for having NO self preservation- he won his jumping unfortunately had a pole down. But his weaves this weekend 🤩🤩🤩
And Roo pulled it out the bag for an agility win! 2 more to go to get to grade 5!
What a way to start my agility season with these three! Looking forward to this season with them 💜🥰🤩

I love to encourage my puppies to hunt me down whether I’m using food or a chaser tug you want to grow value to you! 🤩

Well there is a high possibility that they will chase something so you may as well tap into it young and get them chasing you!
This is the reason why I can call my dogs away from furry things! They have found their love of chasing me early on! Drifty is 11 weeks old today and his toy drive and recall is coming on lovely!
I have done a lot of puppy puppy puppy and play in the house before I took this outside. This place was very exciting for Drifty, lots of smells and he did so well!
Top tip- DON’T overuse your dog’s name! You will devalue it! 😫

As soon as you get your puppy you can grow value to a safe space whether this is a crate or pen. I do recommend crate training all dogs you never know when you will need to use one for example if your dog becomes injured and needs crate rest.
Start off by feeding your dog in this space and stay close to them! Don’t just feed them and walk away you need to grow this over time.
Little Drifty is having many meals, training and playing sessions in his pen! He’s starting to love it and respect his boundaries! So not jumping up at the bars!
This can come really easily to some dogs and other dogs you may have to spend more time working at a dog loving being separated from you.
This helps with
✅a dog being able to settle when things are happening around the house e.g. children running around
✅Dogs not barking and running at the door when there are people there
✅Dogs being chilled when you have people over
✅Being able to leave your dog
✅Recall! They find distractions less interesting!

Knowing how to reward your dog is so important! 🥰
I often see owners recall their dogs and pat them on the head or give them a stroke- quite a lot of dogs don’t like this and duck under their owners hands.
You can also be using the wrong reinforcer for example if I kept using food for my collies whilst working with distractions I wouldn’t have dogs that could walk past other dogs/people.
So are you using the right toy or food? ❓
Does your dog love playing with toys and you are not taking the toy out on your walks to reward check ins and recalls? 🐶
Every time you use the wrong reinforcer you are devaluing the behaviour you want your dog to do for example rewarding loose lead walking with food to mouth can be a bad deal for some dogs but rewarding loose lead walking (walking to heel) with movement so releasing them out of ‘heel’ and playing chase or getting your dog to chase food can be a lot more rewarding. Therefore loose lead walking becomes more favourable to the dog.
Try out different ways to reward your dog 🤩

Here’s tip number 1! 🔥
Grow calmness- try walking in a big sweeping figure of 8 at an appropriate distance to distractions! 🤩 keep your dog moving, once they are walking with you, start to slow your walking down.

Sniffing is a huge part of a dog’s life! It’s how they understand their world. 🤩
If you have a dog struggling in an environment, on a walk then ask them to sniff! See them relax and begin to calm down.
I do put sniffing on a cue so that I can tell my dogs to go sniff. This is a great strategy to grow calmness and confidence in different situations. 😍
