It's a common misconception that dogs don't get treats/rewards in the wild.

However, they can run free all day, playing with whoever they want, for as long as they want, whenever they want. They can sniff, chew, eat, scavenge, forage, and chase until their hearts are content, and much more. The wild is full of rewards!

In fact, an entire part of the brain is dedicated to rewards, and it evolved long before dogs did. Every time a behaviour successfully gets a reward, their brain remembers it so they know how to get the reward again in future. The behaviour becomes a habit.

Dogs are naturally driven to live rewarding lives and are much happier and healthier when they get that opportunity.

Rewards do an excellent job of teaching dogs undesirable behaviours, so we also take advantage of that learning process and use it to teach dogs desirable behaviour.

Note: Not all behaviour is caused by rewards. For example, a dog may bark to ask for attention (reward), but they may also bark because they feel threatened or overexcited (emotion). Many behaviours are caused by emotions; they work differently and should be treated as such.

Part of Puppy Socialisation involves learning how other dogs communicate. Dogs communicate through body language. Being on lead restricts movement and body language so we like to get the pups off lead so they can learn to "speak and listen" as clearly as possible. 🐾 🏅

Beginners Class 21st Aug 2022

Break time! A wee play or sniffing session during and after training helps boost happy hormones which in turn boost memory and helps these guys remember what they've been learning. Also, all the falling over, and floppy behaviour between the two more playful pups is their way of saying "I'm just being silly and I don't want to scare you". These little signals are intended to help other dogs feel confident and secure. Often when pups are too excited they struggle to read and respond to these signals so we help them learn to communicate by teaching them to calm down before we introduce them. After a break, we calm them down again and get back to skills training.

Rescue Rex

Some ups and downs but I think Rex is looking much less anxious on his walks. He used to get completely overwhelmed and shut down, he would barely look at his handler, nevermind come back to them. Poor guy didn't know what to do with himself. ❤

Taking a Kong Break

Smashing training session with Giz. 🤓🐾 Lots of work on socialisation with a new place, people, sounds, objects, surfaces and smells. With all this socialisation, I couldn't forget working on teaching him to enjoy spending time alone and relaxing, and soon enough he was snoring. 💤

Resource Guarding Solutions w/Rocky

Try to take something from Rocky and you'll get an aggressive reaction. 🤬 So we're changing it! 😁 Part of the process is teaching Rocky that giving up items by choice, without being forced, is rewarding, and fun. 💖 We started that today in his first session with a simple "drop it" cue. 🗣 He aced the biggest challenge of all and managed to tear himself away from a delicious, food stuffed Kong when requested. 🤤 Nice!
