Piggy Spa Day!

Meet Neeps, the Guinea Pig in having his bi-annual nail cut and fringe trim (so he can see out and so we can tell which end is which) 😜

The spa day coincided with his 4th birthday 🎂 🥳

How gorgeous is he?

For those who are wondering yes, there was a ‘Haggis’ but he passed away a couple of weeks ago and no, there was never a ‘Tatties’.

Did you know there is a blood bank for pets? 🩸

PetBloodBankUK is a charity that helps to save the lives of pets in need. It’s just like the human blood service, but for dogs.

🐶 They run donation sessions across the country where owners bring their much loved dogs to give blood. We are delighted to host sessions at our surgery in Dundee.

Pet Blood Bank needs your help to ensure blood is always available 🙏

They are looking for large, happy, healthy, and confident dogs to come forward as blood donors to help save the lives of other dogs in need. To be a blood donor, your dog should be:

🐶 Between the ages of 1 and 8

🐶 Weigh over 25kg

🐶 Fit and healthy

🐶 Happy, confident, and enjoy meeting new people

If this sounds like your dog, head over to Pet Blood Bank’s website to find out more

Some donors who come to the sessions at Dundee are in the new calendar.

🎆Fireworks and Fear: Petrified Pets 🎆

In the lead up to fireworks season - are you prepared?

Fireworks seem to now occur regularly throughout October-December with Halloween, Bonfire night, Christmas and New year.

Although spectacular to watch they have very real implications for the welfare of our wildlife, livestock and pet animals.

⬇️Here is some advice this firework season. Stay tuned for more individual advice on each section in the coming weeks.

🐱Cats
✅Check microchip details are up to date
✅Try and keep them inside after dark. We understand this can be difficult. You may need to provide more play and calming aids to help them with a change in routine
✅Close all doors and windows to prevent them bolting
✅Shut curtains to dim the noise and flashes
✅ Give them a safe hiding place or don't disturb them if they find their own safe place to settle. Cats often like to be up high

🐶Dogs
✅Check microchip details are up to date
✅Walk before dark. If toileting outside go out with them on a leash to avoid them bolting if a firework goes off unexpectedly
✅Use calming aids
✅Give them as safe place to stay that is covered, dark and quiet. Do not lock them in here.
✅Watch that all doors are closed to avoid escape
✅You can comfort your pet, just ensure you stay safe if they are extremely agitated

🐭Small Furries
✅You may need to bring any animals inside if it doesn't cause them too much stress
✅They may require more bedding
✅Cover accomodation to prevent the lights from upsetting them
✅Move indoor enclosures away from windows to dull the noise and light

🐴Horses
✅Check local fire displays and prepare
✅Keep to a routine
✅Check the field or Stable is free from hazards
✅Give your vet notice if you require medication for your horses anxiety
✅Check on them regularly or stay with them if they are known to spook so you can react quickly if they become upset

🐮Livestock
✅Tell local farmers if you intend to have a Firework display and try to avoid the loud fireworks. Do not set fireworks off around fields containing livestock.

🦔 Wildlife
✅Check bonfires before lighting for any wildlife such as rodents or hedgehogs
✅Avoid setting fireworks off near known wildlife areas like nature reserves

🧑‍⚕️ How your vet can help
✅If your animals experiences distress then there are medications we can prescribe
✅You will likely need a prescription check even if you have it yearly
✅Veterinary professionals are also well placed to give you individual advice on how to help your pets

🎆If you plan to have a firework display:

➡️Please tell all your neighbours in advance that you plan it.
This will ensure they have had time to adequately prepare their animals for the event.
If possible please consider using alternative options such as silent or low noise fireworks if you know you are surrounded by families with cats, dogs, other pets or if you live by a farm or livery yard.

➡️Please tell owners how long the display will go on for and don't go beyond that so they know when it is safe to let their pets out for toileting or grazing.

➡️ Please do not release sky lanterns

During the month of November, Parkside will be joining in with the national antibiotic amnesty. This campaign will be encouraging owners to hand back any unused mediation, particularly antibiotics, in an effort to reduce the inappropriate use and disposal of antibiotics. This, in turn, is in an effort to combat antibiotic resistance.

Over the next few days we will share information pertaining to this amnesty.

🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃

Contrary to FB posts please DONT put your used pumpkins out in forestry areas or in the countryside.

The information online is incorrect and is potentially harmful to the animals who may encounter them. The pumpkins begin to turn fairly quickly but take a long time to fully rot.

Pumpkins are not natural to forestry/rural areas and while some wildlife may initially enjoy a tasty snack whilst they are fresh, it can make others, such as hedgehogs, very poorly. Feeding pumpkins can make birds, foxes, badgers, deer etc can make them very unwell and can spread disease.

Please don’t do it 🙃

Halloween Safety!

We don’t want to be party poopers but it’s worth being aware of the potential risks of Halloween for pets.

🍬 Some sweets may contain xylitol which is toxic to pets.

🍫 Chocolate and pets don’t mix! We don’t want you to spend Halloween with a vomiting dog.

👻 Unexpected guests can make some pets worried so make sure they feel safe and cannot bolt from your house.

🧨 Many pets are terrified of fireworks if your pet is one of them please speak to us in advance about what can be done to help them.

👘Some pets don’t appreciate being dressed up please respect what they’re comfortable with.

🎃 PLEASE don’t dump pumpkins in woodland or outside for wild animals they quickly turn and are wholly unsafe for wild animals or your own pets should they find pumpkins.

As always if you need us please just call 01382 810777 and follow directions.

A young female pointer called Remi was presented to our team at Arbroath with a cough which had suddenly come on during her walk.

She had run through a field of barley whilst chasing something.

She was referred to the Dundee surgery for further investigations including a bronchoscope which is a camera that can look into her nasal chambers, down her airways and into her lungs.

This photo shows the extent of what she inhaled. We managed to get it all out with small endoscopic forceps thankfully.

Remi has now fully recovered.

As the nights draw in it’s advisable to make sure you make your dog visible if you’re walking in the dark.

There’s are lots of high visibility coats, light up collars on the market now. If your dog runs off high visibility/lights make finding him/her much easier.

It’s also worth making sure that they their microchips are up to date and that they are wearing an ID disc should they get lost.

Both are law.

Next time you visit the surgery ask us to scan the microchip, we’ll give you the number so that you can check your details online from home. To find out who the microchip provider is please use the link below …

https://www.check-a-chip.co.uk

If the worst should happen and you lost your dog reunification is made much easier by an ID tag.

Stay safe 🌒 🐕 🚨
