Both were done laparoscopically meaning the healing process is shorter, and they can return to regular exercise in just 2 days! ๐

Lovely wee Penny has been a client at Ashwood for 3 years this month! ๐
Since joining the Ashwood family, Penny has had cruciate repair surgery, bilateral patella luxation repair surgeries, mitral valve disease management, and copious amounts of rehabilitation k laser therapy to manage her arthritis. ๐ฆด๐ซ
You could say that Penny is a regular! ๐
At 14 years old, this golden oldie loves to come in for a visit, and we love seeing her! ๐ซถ๐ผ

Lovely Nurse Laura was on cuddle duty for brother & sister, Pyper & Beau after their surgeries! ๐ฅฐ
Pyper was in for a lump removal & dentistry, and Beau was in for his castration & removal of deciduous teeth! ๐ฆท
Did you know that dogs have 28 deciduous teeth, which are replaced my 42 permanent teeth as they grow! ๐ชฅ
Retained deciduous teeth can cause lots of problems for a growing dog, so we try to remove them at the time of neutering as they are already under anaesthetic! ๐ Removing them at this early stage gives the permanent tooth a greater chance of erupting in a normal pattern! ๐ป

This cutie pie is Belle the Cavapoo ๐งก
Belle was feeling a bit mischievous and thought sheโd worry her nanny by eating a pink, silk scrunchie!! ๐
She was brought into us just 20 minutes later & we gave her an ocular administered emetic (meaning eye drops that will induce vomiting)! ๐๐ป no injections!
A quick 15 minutes later the scrunchie was up! ๐
We washed it & made sure to return it to Belles Nanny, but Iโm not sure sheโll want to use it again after where itโs been ๐คญ๐

We did another keyhole abdominal cryptorchid castrate yesterday! ๐๐ผ๐ญ
Lovely Harvey only had one descended testicle, meaning the other testicle was most likely still in his abdomen. ๐
He underwent a routine castration to remove the descended testicle, and a keyhole procedure to remove the abdominal testicle. Thankfully, keyhole surgery meant this was removed in a minimally invasive way, allowing a smaller wound and a quicker recovery! โค๏ธโ๐ฉน๐ฅณ

On the 5th of May: Rebecca, Anna, Molli, Lisa & Laura-Marie are running in the relay at the Belfast Marathon for the charity TinyLife. ๐๐
On Wednesday the 12th of April 2023 our lovely Head Nurse Anna came into work for a normal shift.
She left work and headed over to the Ulster Hospital for a routine antenatal appointment at 31 weeks pregnant with a โIโll be back soon, Iโm just going for a quick check up!โ ๐
Little did we know, little Isaac would be delivered that evening and Anna wouldnโt return back to work for 8 months!! ๐คฏ๐๐ผ
Isaac was born 9 weeks early, which meant mum and baby had to stay in hospital for 5 weeks undergoing a multitude of tests & staying under close observation. ๐ฉ๐ผโโ๏ธ
TinyLife assisted Anna in hospital & at home with the support of their breast pump loan service. The service enabled her to feed Isaac when he was too young and too small to feed independently. ๐ผ
Coincidentally, Rebecca, Anna, Molli, Lisa & Laura-Marie will be running the marathon on the anniversary of Isaac coming home!! ๐ ๐
Our fundraising goal of ยฃ1,200 will allow us to provide enough funds to buy a hospital grade breast pump for the TinyLife Charity - the same one as Anna was given to use. ๐ต๐

Lovely Chester, the golden cocker spaniel puppy, was in having his a**l glands expressed with RVNs Debbie & Fiona โญ๏ธ
Dogโs a**l glands are usually the size of a small grape and sit just inside the bottom. Most dogs naturally empty their a**l glands when they poo, however, sometimes this doesnโt happen and the a**l glands can get blocked & need manually expressed. ๐
Here are some signs that your dog needs its a**l glands expressed:
๐ a foul smell coming from their bottom or on their breath
๐ discomfort when sitting down
๐ rubbing/shuffling/scooting their bottoms across the ground
๐ excessive licking/chewing at their bottom

Juke the handsome 8 year old Whippet X came in to see Vet Patrick at the start of March as he was feeling a bit off form. โค๏ธโ๐ฉน
On exam, Patrick found that his prostate was enlarged, and he only had one descended testicle; meaning the other testicle was most likely still in his abdomen. ๐
Juke came in the following week for a keyhole procedure to remove the abdominal testicle and to remove the descended one via routine castration. During the procedure Patrick quickly realised that the abdominal testicle had significantly grown in size and had become cancerous. Thankfully, keyhole surgery meant this was removed in a minimally invasive way, allowing a smaller wound and a quicker recovery! ๐๐ผ๐ซถ๐ผ
You can see in the picture the massive size difference between the two testicles. ๐

๐ฑFELINE ARTHRITIS๐ฑ Feline arthritis is common in cats of all ages, breeds and sizes. Signs can go unnoticed until there is significant pain present and quality of life is severely affected. There are many different treatment options available that can help bring you back your happy feline companion. ๐ป Difficulty getting up or down stairs, trouble jumping up onto or down from surfaces, becoming less active and a more withdrawn/grumpy attitude may all indicate signs of arthritis. They like to be able to see out of where they are drinking from, so they prefer wide dishes or running taps....much like this beautiful puss in the video๐๐. It's best to have more than one drinking option avaliable.๐๐๐ This made us laugh a lot so we though it would brighten your Tuesday too.
