Training Isnโ€™t Optional!

So thereโ€™s gonna be some harsh realities in this post and no doubt at all some people will be crying in the comments, but as a dog trainer, my biggest concern is with dogs, not people!

Dog training is not an optional part of dog ownership. Neither is dog food, vet visits, appropriate travel etc. They all come in the exact same bracket.

People seem to put dog training as something low down their list. I get messages and comments from people saying they canโ€™t afford to see a trainer, yet their profile picture is a photo from their recent holiday to Dubai, or their new BMW. Iโ€™ve had people from ALL walks of life come and train their dog. Did some have to make more sacrifices to afford it? Of course they did.

Iโ€™m fully aware that not everyone can afford 1-1 time with a trainer and I get that completely but thereโ€™s a million other avenues. Group sessions, courses etc. My academy is a pound a day. So if someone has sky tv, or Netflix and a coffee at costa every week, they can train their dog.

Vets look after the physical health of our dogs and theyโ€™re a necessity. Dog trainers look after the mental welfare of our dogs, and theyโ€™re just as important.

Training your dog is obligatory. He didnโ€™t ask to have the owner he got, and he absolutely deserves to enjoy the very short life he has.

Train your dog! Allow them to love this life. They deserve at least that much!

Taken from a fellow trainers page ๐Ÿถ I am in complete agreement!

In the last two or three or three years Iv seen a pretty dramatic rise in impulsive and impatient behaviours in dogs, but owners can tend to be impatient as well.

They tend to get caught up in achieving the end result of teaching a behaviour, whether that be walking at heel on the lead while on a walk, a solid reliable recall or flawless duration on place command.

So much so that the small steps and wee wins on the journey to that end result are left unacknowledged in the rush to get there.

The dog that after a week of consistent lead training out on the street outside can walk perfectly in that street but anywhere else and it reverts back to the pulling like a train. Owners will typically message me to tell me this with an air of disappointment. But this is a dog that a week ago was pulling the owner out the front door to get the walk started and all the way up that very street itโ€™s now walking perfectly in. This is a step closer to that end result, acknowledge it, use it as encouragement and inspiration to complete the journey.

The dog that can recall from a hundred yards away with mild distractions in the immediate environment that couldnโ€™t recall from from fifty yards away with no distractions a week ago.

The dog that can lay on place chilling for ten minutes without attempting to come of the bed before being released but a week ago couldnโ€™t keep itself still for ten seconds.

When teaching our dogs how to behave properly we most of the time have old bad behaviours to clear out the locker as well, behaviours that typically have a lengthy reinforcement history. This all takes time, consistency and patience.

Take your time be patient, stop putting too much expectations on your dog. Celebrate and acknowledge those wee wins, theyโ€™re part of the process and each one is a step closer to where you want to be. All those small steps eventually add up to one big leap forward.

As a society we are impatient and want things done now, is it any wonder our dogs are the same?Do not rush the process, if you do you will never see permanent results!

1-1 session today with this handsome boy, Trev!

We worked on giving his owners the knowledge on how to get more consistency with his behaviour in the house and how to make communication clearer for him.

We introduced the place command which they will be working on over the next few weeks to ensure Trev stays calm around the house when he hears the door or noises outside the house!

We will be returning soon to help Trev control his excitement around other dogs, his owners are already making good progress with this!

Great post about socialisation! Itโ€™s so misunderstood today!

Please take time out to read this and socialise your dog properly ๐Ÿถ

This is exactly how I run my classes, teach dogs to be comfortable calm and exist around people/dogs and have a bigger interest in their owners l!

A conversation that comes up alot:
Socialisation

Firstly puppies don't need to actually 'meet' every person or dog to be well socialised.

In fact puppies who meet every person and dog they, and spend alot of time play fighting with other dogs can end up obsessed by other dogs and people. This can lead to issues I'll come back to later.

People complain about unruly and out of control dogs running up to them. Dog owners need to be more responsible about their dogs behaviour, dogs should be kept under control.

Correct socialisation includes environmental training which can really help build your dogs confidence and doesn't include meeting people or dogs.

You see, socialisation is such a misunderstood word in dog training.

We are constantly contacted by people wanting to bring their pups to classes to play with other dogs, their rescue dogs to classes to meet other dogs and learn to play with other dogs, even dogs with behavioural problems to classes to socialise them around calm dogs.

Our classes are not for any of the above. Our classes are designed to educate the owners on how to train their dogs and get the best out of their dogs. Our classes are designed to help owners learn skills to help them train their dogs for life. Our classes are to educate the owners on how to keep their dogs safe. In our classes dogs are learning skills, and, how to relax and focus on their owners in the presence of other dogs and people.

John and I educate our clients about what socialisation is, and, the importance of not letting their dogs run up to other dogs. The same applies to people.

Here's why...I want my dogs focused on me, rather than on other dogs or other people. Another thing I want from my dogs is a reliable recall. Why? There are several reasons for not letting your dog run up to other dogs or people.

If your dog runs up to a dog who is on a lead it may be on a lead for one of these reasons: maybe the dog is nervous, maybe aggressive, the dog could be recovering from illness or surgery, it may be in pain, the dog may be in training, perhaps the dog is unpredictable, or, has a poor recall, the list goes on...

The dangers dog act is another reason to not let your dog run up to people. If you cannot recall your dog and he runs up to someone and they feel fearful, you could be reported and your dog could be deemed dangerously out of control in the eyes of the law.

Dog theft is on the rise. If your dog is over friendly or has a poor recall and runs up to people your dog could be at a greater risk of getting snatched

Incorrect socialisation can create "over friendly" dogs who are more interested in other dogs than in the owner. These dogs can become obsessed by other dogs and may pull or lunge on the lead to try to get to the other dog. This can lead to frustration or even aggression.

Here's the thing, dog on dog attacks are on the rise. You wouldn't believe the amount of dogs John sees for behavioural consultations that have been attacked and as a result are either fearful or now aggressive, or, the amount of calls we get from owners who's dogs just won't recall when other dogs are around and are starting to get themselves into trouble. If you've never witnessed a dog on dog attack or had to deal with the aftermath of a dog attack it probably sounds a bit far fetched or even a bit dramatic.

It's not mean to ensure you can control your dog. It's not cruel to stop your dog from running up to other dogs and people. It could save your dogs life.

Socialisation done correctly includes getting your dog used to and comfortable around sounds, sights, activities, objects, people, and dogs that he or she may come across in their lives. It should also include teaching your dog how to behave and relax around various places, dogs and people. It does not mean letting your dog play fight with other dogs or jump up people.

Hope that helps xx
