Very well done to all competitors. It was a lovely evening, the weather was fine and warm. We are so proud of all the horses. I don't think we have ever had an equal first to my knowledge, but to have two out of 3 classes with equal firsts just shows how hard everyone fought. Hoping to see you all at the next competition!

Pony Days for riders from 5 yrs - 15 yrs held on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 - 4 p.m. Lunch included. £90
Introduction to jumping for riders who can independently walk, trot and canter. 8 week jumping course starting Tuesday, 2nd July, 4 - 5 p.m.
£40 per session.
Introduction to horse-riding. Various times available. Minimum age: 4yrs. All ages welcome. £25 for a half hour session, or £37 for a one hour session.

SHIELDBANK PONY DAYS IN THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS !!!
We will be holding our very popular Pony Days right through the Summer School Holidays on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays in addition to all our regular lessons. Everyone is welcome!
Pony Days start at 10 a.m. and finish at 4 p.m. The age range of participants varies from 5 yrs upwards to adults! We try and group people of similar ages so that everyone can benefit more. Every participant is introduced to the care of our horses and ponies (grooming, mucking out, tacking up and untacking), as well as riding both in the morning and in the afternoon. Learning all these skills will eventually allow people to have their own pony or horse.
Also included in the price of £90 (per day per person) is lunch in our Coffee Shop. Please let our staff know upon arrival what you would like to eat for lunch (from our menu), and importantly, if any Pony Day people have allergies!
Bookings can be made ideally by email to [email protected] which allows us to plan better. Payments can be made by bank transfer, by card or in cash at the latest on the day you have booked.

EXCITING EASTER HOLIDAY TREAT FOR CHILDREN
Have you ever been round ponies before? Would you like to try grooming and riding a pony?

PONY DAYS DURING THE EASTER HOLIDAYS !

Come and enjoy 2 hours of riding split into 2 sessions, morning and afternoon, as well as feeding, mucking out, grooming, tacking up, untacking in short - spending time with ponies! Lunch is included in the Coffee Shop, so please make sure you put in your order when you arrive for 10 a.m. The Pony Day finishes at 4 p.m. and costs £90 (all inclusive).

We have been absorbing increases in costs for several months, but the time has come where we will have to put our lesson prices up so as to stay afloat. I have tried to keep the increases to the minimum.
The new prices will be valid from 1st March, 2024.
For those of you who have bought 10 lesson Season Tickets, there will be no increase in price until you need to renew your ticket.
For riders who pay by Standing Order, please adjust the monthly amount you are paying.

PRICES from 1st March, 2024
CLASS RIDING LESSON PRICES – PAY AS YOU GO
1 hour group lesson £ 37

PRIVATE RIDING LESSON PRICES – PAY AS YOU GO

A lesson is considered to be private when the rider has specifically requested a one-to-one lesson with their instructor.
CANCELLATIONS: All lessons should be cancelled 24 hours prior to the start of the session. This is to allow someone else to take advantage of that slot. Should you or your child take ill on the day of your lesson, the very minimum cancellation period we can accept is one hour prior to the start of the lesson otherwise the full price is payable.
SEASON TICKET FOR MULTIPLE BOOKINGS: 10 Lessons for the price of 9. The Season Ticket needs to be paid up front whereupon you will receive a card with 10 squares each representing one lesson. The card must be presented each time you ride when it will be initialed and dated by a member of staff. Season Tickets are valid for 3 months.
FOR OUR REGULAR WEEKLY RIDERS: MONTHLY PAYMENTS FOR RIDING LESSONS BY STANDING ORDER
Riding lessons paid monthly by standing order are available and represent the most economical way for regular riders to pay for their lessons: Per Month
52 x 1 hr Group Lessons monthly by standing order £140
52 x 1 hr Private Lessons paid monthly by standing order £190
52 x ½ hr Group Lessons paid monthly by standing order £100
Lessons prepaid by standing order can be banked and re-arranged throughout the year should members have to cancel. Any banked lessons must be taken within the calendar year in which they were banked unless they were banked in December, in which case they can be carried forward to the following year. Please note: riders can cancel their Standing Order at any point if they can no longer ride regularly and revert to the pay-as-you-go price. However, once on standing order, riders cannot simply avoid paying certain monthly Standing Order payments to catch up with their unused lessons and then revert back. The Standing Order rate is a special rate discounted for regular weekly riders.
PONY DAYs (Available during all School Holidays on Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays)
Not only riding, but also horse knowledge and care is taught on Pony Days, allowing each participant to get an insight “behind the scenes” of what it takes to care for a pony or horse. Apart from 2 sessions of riding, riders are taught to groom, muck out, tack up, untack, give hay and feed, put on headcollars, boots, bandages, rugs, as well as learning to tie up a pony correctly and safely. Lunch in our Coffee Shop is included in the price. The day starts at 10 p.m. and finishes at 4 p.m. The total cost is £90.
DRESSAGE AND JUMPING COMPETITIONS will be held throughout the Summer which will be open to all our riders. The dates, classes and entry fees will be posted on our page: Shieldbank Riding & Vaulting Club
EQUESTRIAN VAULTING
Very often described as gymnastics on the moving horse, equestrian vaulting offers everyone the opportunity to experience greater harmony and balance on the horse. A specially designed vaulting roller and felt pad are used to give the vaulter greater security as well as a better “feel” of the horse’s movement. It is a sport for young people from age 5 upwards, and it is not necessary to have ridden before starting vaulting. On the Continent, children are actively encouraged to learn to vault first before they start riding, as vaulting introduces them to walk, trot and canter on the lunge.
Vaulting Sessions are held weekly on Saturday afternoons from 2.30 – 4.30 pm and Wednesday evening from 7.30 – 9 p.m. The cost per vaulter per week is £28 whether they attend one or two sessions.
There is a one hour introductory class to vaulting for younger children on Saturday mornings at 11 a.m. The cost for this class is £25 per session.
VAULTING CAMP will be held during the week commencing 5th August in preparation for attending a national vaulting competition at The Howe Equestrian Centre near Cupar on 10th August, 2024. The costs for the residential camp, plus fees for attending the national competition will be posted on our page.

Last Monday, 19th February, we had our annual inspection and passed with flying colours. Thank you to all our staff and to our volunteers who helped get the place and the horses ready!
Hi Everyone,
DM Equestrian, a livery yard just two miles away from us, has discovered that one of their grass livery horses has a very contagious condition called Strangles. The owners have been very upfront and put the information out on facebook for which they need to be commended.
May I just remind all our riders, visitors and staff about the responsibility we all have towards the health of horses.
When coming to Shieldbank, please do not come wearing clothes (i.e. jackets, coats, helmets, jodphurs, boots, or gloves) you have worn whilst in contact with horses elsewhere. Strangles, just like many other diseases, can very easily be transmitted by patting a horse in one yard or field, and then patting a horse at Shieldbank or anywhere else.
The health of our horses depends on everyone understanding how important it is not to cross contaminate between different groups of horses. Please remember, that it is very often not possible to identify a horse that is developing a disease, because it may not have any symptoms (such as a runny nose) yet. If you have had contact with horses or ponies elsewhere, make a point of washing your hands thoroughly (possibly face and hair as well) and wash all your kit. The same applies when you go from Shieldbank to another field or yard with horses.

We are still looking for another permanent member of staff who would be keen to teach riders, school horses and assist with yardwork. We support continual professional development and are happy to facilitate the preparation for BHS exams. The post would suit an energetic and enthusiastic individual willing to commit to 40 hours per week, Wednesday through Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Please dress warmly when you come for riding lessons. Remember your gloves, extra pair of socks, possibly even ski underwear and a water and windproof jacket. Riding is an outdoor sport and there is nothing better than feeling toasty warm in the middle of the Scottish countryside on a horse.

We would like to welcome all our new members of staff who have joined our team in the last two weeks. We are open to applications from freelance instructors who are available to teach 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. with one hour for lunch, or instructors who are looking for a permanent contract for one or more days per week.

Would you like to work in the horse industry?
We have a vacancy for an apprentice here at Shieldbank Riding & Vaulting Club. Minimum age 16 years. The apprenticeship will be run in conjunction with SRUC and will lead to an SVQ in horse care at SCQF Level 5 (equivalent to BHS Stage 2 Ride and Care).
The duration of the apprenticeship will be approx. 18 months. Applicants will need to show that they are capable of riding a well schooled horse in walk, trot and canter as well as being able to jump a small cross pole.
As a riding school, we are keen to attract candidates who would stay on after their apprenticeship and pursue a career in teaching horseriding.
