Ensuring mares receive optimal nutrition during lactation is essential for their health and the development of strong, thriving foals. After foaling, a mare’s nutritional needs increase significantly, as she produces milk amounting to 1-4% of her body weight daily—rich in energy, protein, calcium, phosphorus, and vitamins. 🍼💪

Colostrum, the mare’s first milk, provides foals with essential antibodies and nutrients needed for survival. Foals should stand and nurse within 1-2 hours after birth, making it crucial they receive high-quality colostrum in this period. Good colostrum should be thick, sticky, and yellow—quality can be accurately measured using a colostrometer or refractometer.

At 33 years young, Karmijn (Minnie) is the definition of aging gracefully! She only retired from show jumping last November at 32, and thanks to 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝘅-𝗣𝗹𝘂𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿, she still looks and feels incredible. 💛
