As the seasons change, so does the quality of grass and the management of your horse’s environment. Autumn brings less nutritious grass, with a higher water content and many horses shift from turnout to stabling, which can affect their digestion. These changes can disrupt gut health, so it's essential to support their digestive system during this transition.

Winter can pose unique challenges for horses, especially those that are poor doers. 🐴❄️ Here are some strategies to help your horse maintain their weight and stay healthy throughout the colder months:

🔹𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲: To combat weight loss, consider incorporating energy-dense feeds like Equi-Jewel or specially formulated conditioning mashes such as Turmash. These can provide the extra calories your horse needs.

🔹𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲: Make sure your horse has access to high-quality hay. Good forage not only provides essential nutrients but also encourages natural foraging behaviour, which can help keep their digestive system functioning properly. If quality forage is limited, offering highly digestible fibre sources such as sugar beet or chopped forage (chaff) can be beneficial.

🔹𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲: Feed your horse smaller, more frequent meals rather than one or two large ones, reducing the risk of digestive issues.

🔹𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗺𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿: Provide adequate shelter from harsh weather conditions. A warm, dry place can help your horse conserve energy, which is crucial for weight maintenance.

🔹𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Ensure your horse has constant access to fresh, unfrozen water. Staying hydrated is essential for overall health and can help with digestion.
