🐈Senior cat diets🐈

As cats get older, their nutritional needs can change.
With age they become more prone to developing weight related issues. This can be due to decreased metabolism, decreased activity or chronic medical conditions. Weight gain can lead to long term health issues for your fur babies.

Choosing the right kind of food for your senior cat can really help them to lead a long, happier and healthier life.

Have any questions regarding your senior cat’s diet? Give us a call or an email🐈✨

🐶Weight Management🐶

Obesity in dogs is more common than you may think. According to a study done by RVC in 2021, in the UK, vet practices recorded that every 1 in 14 dogs were overweight.

Cases of dog obesity are increasing every year, it is in fact the most common nutritional disorder that is seen in dogs. Obesity can create a multitude of issues for your furry friend, such as diabetes, heart disease and arthritis.

In our practice, we offer weight management clinics with our Registered Veterinary Nurse. During these appointments our vet nurse will work alongside you to create a manageable weight loss programme for your pet. We will record and track your pets body condition score, body measurements, percentage overweight and formulate a realistic weight loss goal per week over a manageable number of weeks/months. A weight management diet may also be recommended as it can also be incredibly useful during these first few weeks/months to ensure our patients are losing weight without compromising their nutrition.

A big part of maintaining a healthy weight for your pet is the right nutrition. Here at the Dunkeld vet we are big fans of Hills pet food, as they have a large selection of specially formulated diets for all life stages and prescription diets, which are incredibly important in managing some illnesses.

If you are concerned about your pets weight and would like to book in for a weight clinic with our vet nurse or if you just have a general question, do not hesitate to give us a call, we are always happy to help🐱🐶✨

Happy Valentine’s Day from all of us here at The Dunkeld Vet to all of our wonderful patients and clients💐🩷

Whilst Valentine’s Day is a great way to spread the love…Did you know that Lily flowers are highly toxic to our small cat friends?

What makes them so toxic to our little furries?
- The whole plant is toxic to cats, this includes the pollen, leaves, roots, petals etc…even the water in the vase that lilies have been sat in!! This means that, whether they are bought lilies from the shop displayed in your kitchen in your best vase or lilies growing outside, both are as toxic as the other.

How do they affect your cat?
- Once ingested, the lily plant will be absorbed by the kidneys. If this is left untreated, it will sadly cause fatal or permanent kidney damage, severe pain and sickness.

Which type of lilies are toxic?
-As far as we know all types of lilies are poisonous to cats. This includes any form of the flower as well, including cut, dried or growing in a pot. Some commonly found types of the flower are Easter lily, Tiger lily, Japanese show lily, Rubrum lily, Day lily and even some members of the Liliaceae flower family.

What are the symptoms?
- If a cat has ingested a lily flower, they will develop early on symptoms in just a few hours of ingestion. These symptoms include nausea and vomiting, lethargy and disinterest in surrounds and a lack of appetite.

If your cat ever ingests a lily flower it is advised to have them seen straight away by a veterinary surgeon so they may treat them accordingly. If treatment is started within 4-6 hours of consumption then there is a good chance of complete recovery, this means time is of the essence for your vet to attempt to prevent kidney damage and/ or failure.

As nice as receiving flowers is on Valentine’s Day by a loved one, do ensure you are careful if you have small furry scavengers, the best way to prevent your cat from coming into contact or ingesting lilies is by not allowing them to be brought into your home in the first place🐱🐾🩷

February is national pet dental month!!
🐶🪥🐱

Periodontal disease is one of the most common health concerns we see in our pets. This is caused by a build up of plaque which will lead to gingivitis and tissue damage, leading to painful teeth and tooth loss! It is incredibly important we look after our pets’ dental health by brushing regularly and visiting your vet or vet nurse for regular dental health check ups! Over the next month we will share how we treat dental issues and show you some lovely before and after pictures!

Please be aware that all dental procedures should only ever be carried out by a veterinary surgeon.

Today Elfies spot is having a nap on our cat shelves in the reception!!🐈
Upon arrival at the practice we have a cat parking area which allows cats to be placed at a height and away from sights that may stress them.
We also provide pheromone sprayed blankets to place over the carrier which provide a message of serenity which can help your cat overcome stress.
