A dogs nose is so much more than just a breathing machine...with up to 300 million olfactory (smelling) receptors a dog is able to:
🐢 Breathe in and out at the same time in a continuous circulation of air

🐢 Smell in 3D - like our eyes, dogs nostrils can smell separately, thus giving them a 3D version of the world

🐢 Smell the passage of time by detecting tiny reductions in the concentration of odour molecules

🐢 Smell up to 100,000 times better than a human. If a dog walked into a bakery, they wouldn't just smell cakes and bread, they'd be able to smell the individual ingredients

What an amazing piece of equipment!

As the school summer holidays approach, it's common to ask the kids to help us with tasks around the house and that can sometimes include walking the dog.

This can sometimes be a lot bigger task than they are ready for so I find this a helpful chart to guide us to ensure both the dog and child are safe and enjoying their walk together

Its an absolute pleasure helping the gorgeous Saffy and her family in these early weeks of her being home.

As you can see, she's chilled and loving life which isn't surprising as her humans are doing a great job of communicating with, playing and loving her πŸ₯°

If you've got a new pup or dog you've welcomed into your family, why not DM me to book a training package to get them off on the right foot 🐾

Any training we do with our dogs, it's so important to set them up to succeed as this helps their learning sooo much!

And what better testament to this than an owner working on calmness around others and keeping their distance in order to allow their dog to watch and process and stay calm.

Well done to both dog and owner πŸ‘πŸ‘

When I first started my walking business, I was keen to set my standards high and start as I meant to go on. I wanted to make sure owners got a good service and the dogs enjoyed their time with me and to me that meant as much of the dogs' time out enjoying all the walks and sniffs they need.

I thought, toileting, although important and necessary, could be cleared away quickly so we could move on and enjoy what we were doing. That is until one day, I was too keen and poo picked literally the moment it touched down, not even considering the fact that this dog loves to kick after a poo....before I could register what was happening, I had a hand, hair and nearly face full of her freshly laid crap and this was at the start of the walk, on a windy day!

The rest of that walk was very enjoyable for the dogs, doing what they love. For me, however, it was focused....on not touching or allowing any part of my hair to swing near my face and in particular my lips (which is tricky when you have mid length hair on a windy day!)

Needless to say, whilst I still have high standards for all my services, poo picking is one area that I'm now happy to wait until the job is entirely done and paws are at a safe distance away 🀣

From wood c**k to nettle bum...

Working outside is great, fresh air and sun is always good for the soul. The one downer though, wild wees. We've all done it at some point in our lives but when working with dogs, you have to be stealthy when nature calls. You think they're all happy playing and sniffing but as soon as they see you duck down, that's it, full speed ahead until they reach you and if you're lucky they stop, if you're not so lucky though you end up with a bum full of stingers and a face full of dog kisses from the one who tackled you 🀣

Ps no bums were stung (or out) when taking this photo 🀣

When we rehome a dog, we promise them a new home, a new life, new connections and new love.

This promise should be carried out with love and kindness as you let your new dog process these lovely new things.

I visited Sky recently who had been in her new home just under a week. We worked on recognising what Sky was saying with her body language and although unsure to start with of a new person being in her home, we gave Sky the time and space to explore and process the situation and by the end of the session she was happy to sit and take treats from me before settling nicely for a snooze.

Understanding what our dogs are saying to us is invaluable to our communication with them as it means we can then provide what they need in any situation.

Pet Behaviour Counsellor Chirag Patel said "Listen to your dog's whisper so he doesn't have to shout". This is so true! Our dogs barking is them shouting, by listening to and understanding their body language means we are hearing their whispers.

We all want our puppies to grow up into well rounded dogs so don't forget that socialising doesn't just mean meeting other dogs!

To allow a puppy to get used to our lives and the things we experience on a daily basis they need to be introduced to them in a friendly, positive way at a distance that they can watch, learn and process. Taking them with us in the car or in a sling or our arms to see the outside world as well as allowing them to see everything within the home is invaluable to them.

Check out this socialisation checklist put together by which helps owners tick off the sounds their puppy has heard as they go along.

Don't forget, there are many a dog welcoming place in Saffron Walden and the surrounding villages so take your pup along and let them take in the sights, sounds and smells of what's happening! Those tagged are just a few of the places you and your pup can go!

Sundays are a day to reflect on the week and usually a time to chuckle...this week I've come up with a new phrase of 'Maypole leads'.

The definition, if it was in a dictionary, would be "when on lead dogs walking together are so excited to smell all the smells at the start of a walk that they do a dance, akin to that of maypole dancers, leaving the leads in a sometimes hard to untangle state".

I often remind myself of the merit of using different coloured leads because to allow the dogs this maypole mayhem time is more important to them than me having the leads in perfect order 😊 My choice of leads has and will always be because of their colourful easy to use leads (which can also be personalised)

Our dogs noses are amazing things, letting them follow them freely is so rewarding, so let them stop and sniff the smells

Ps I know the car isn't squeaky clean but trust me, it's better than it was 🀣

They say 'never work with animals and children', well...dogs love to play, search and fetch. In the main we get sticks and lost balls, but sometimes, we are surprised by what the dogs turn up in our respectable Saffron Walden....πŸ€£πŸ™ˆπŸ˜±

And yes, they have been hung from trees. Rumour has it, its to keep the dogs safe 🀣 and we all thought money grew on trees

Did someone say woodc**k 🀣🀣🀣

You know the old saying 'never work with animals or children'? Well, this phrase was coined by someone in the showbiz industry but, having 2 kids who were 3years and 6months respectively when I started my dog business, there are times when I wholly concur with this phrase!

We've been together all day, she's had fun with friends and even chased some deer πŸ™ˆ but Poppy still wants to be with me when I'm doing the garden....it must be true love and connection 😍 (although she really should stand on the other side of the mower to where the grass flies out of πŸ€£πŸ™ˆ)

From a business of walking dogs on my own, to a team of walkers and boarders and qualifying as a Trainer, the last 9 years has taught me so much. My love of dogs and helping people communicate with them though has stayed the same and continues to grow with the Training I do.

By using a long line for training, especially for exercises such as loose lead walking and recall we are allowing our dogs to make good choices because of having options.

If you'd like to help communicate effectively with your dog as well as giving them space to make good choices, why not sign up for our 'Recharge your Recall' course or a general 1-2-1 session to complement any training you may already have done 🐢

So nice to work with Bear and his owners recently during a 1-2-1 training walk.

Being able to recognise when Bear is communicating his happy distance from other dogs means that he can relax and process all the information he is taking in on his walks.

Did you know that here at HHH, we don't just offer walks and home boarding?

Training is an important part of living with a dog and when I say training, I don't just mean the formal sit, wait, come etc, I actually mean communicating.

If we understand how to effectively communicate with our dogs, then we can all live our best lives together.

Let me know how I can help you communicate more effectively with your dog by clicking the message button below πŸ‘‡
