Galedin Veterinary- Equine

Galedin Veterinary- Equine Olympic standard equine care. Our team of experts ensures your horse receives top-quality treatment, helping them perform at their best.

Trusted by the Olympic Brazilian equestrian team and Badminton winners. We offer in-patient and surgical facilities. Our journey to become Galedin Vets began over 100 years ago. In 1817, Robert Glaister was invited and paid 50 guineas by the Border Union Agricultural society to move his practice from Wooler in Northumberland, to Kelso. Whether it's your small household pet, your horse or your live

stock that need our attention, our team of over 30 vets have broad collective experiences to ensure that your animal gets incomparable care. But how do you pronounce 'Galedin'? Well, that depends on who you ask, but we say it "Gah-Ledd-Inn".

🐎❄️ Joint care in cold weather for your horse ❄️🐎

As temperatures drop, many horses experience increased joint stiffness, which can lead to discomfort and a higher risk of injury during winter riding.

To keep your horse comfortable and injury-free:

🐎Warm-up: Start with a proper warm-up to improve blood flow
❄️Stay active: Encourage daily movement to maintain flexibility
🐎Use appropriate blankets and leg wraps

Keep an eye on your horse for any signs of discomfort and consult your vet if you are worried.

⚠️ Equine seasonal hazards ⚠️

As temperatures drop, keeping your horses safe from seasonal hazards is essential. Here are some key risks:

❄ Ice & slippery ground: Horses can easily slip on icy surfaces, leading to serious injuries. Clear pathways and use sand or grit for better traction.
❄ Toxic plants: Some toxic plants, like yew, bracken and acorns, can still be present in winter pastures. Ensure grazing areas are free of harmful vegetation.
❄ Wet and muddy conditions: These can lead to slips and falls, as well as increase the risk of mud fever, a painful skin condition from prolonged damp exposure.

Stay vigilant to keep your horses happy and healthy this winter!

❗❗As we approach the Christmas holidays, please ensure an adequate supply of medication for your horse. Please place your orders for any necessary repeat medications as soon as possible to ensure availability throughout the festive season.

To avoid any inconvenience, we advise collecting your medication directly from the practice. Postal services may experience delays and during this busy period, picking up in person will ensure you have what you need.

Please allow up to 48 hours for veterinary authorisation and processing of your prescription request. Thank you for your attention to this matter and we wish you and your horse a wonderful holiday season.

Researchers have made a massive breakthrough in identifying the likely cause of equine grass sickness. This is fantastic news and we can't wait to see where this new discovery will take our ability to treat this often devastating disease.

We are delighted to share the news from Professor Bruce McGorum that researchers, involving The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies’ Equine Hospital team, have identified the likely source of equine grass sickness.

Grass sickness is a devastating equine condition, the cause of which has been undiscovered for more than 100 years. However, researchers believe they have identified a neurotoxic enzyme, present in pasture, that may be responsible for the disease. This neurotoxic enzyme is also present in some snake venoms, suggesting that treatments in development for the effects of snake venom may be adapted for the recovery of horses affected by grass sickness.

Professor Bruce McGorum said: “Identifying a probable cause of equine grass sickness represents a significant breakthrough. We hope this discovery will lead to novel treatments and improved diagnostics for this devastating condition. We are very grateful for the generous support from horse owners, veterinary surgeons, scientists, charities and funding bodies."

Professor Scott Pirie said: “This work has clearly demonstrated the value of considering disease pathology, even subtle structural changes only visible at extremely high magnification, in the quest to identify the causes of disease, particularly those attributable to the action of toxins."

This exciting discovery is an enormous step forward in our understanding and treatment of this devastating disease.

From messenger pigeons and courageous horses to loyal dogs and even camels, these animals played a crucial role in our history, offering unwavering support in times of conflict.

As we remember the fallen, let us also pay tribute to the animals who gave their lives and helped shape the world we live in today. Together, we honour them all.

🎆 Fireworks & horse safety 🎆

As the firework season approaches, keep your horse calm by ensuring their stable or paddock is securely enclosed. Create a quiet, familiar space with their usual bedding, feed, and water. If possible, stay with them for reassurance, and play soft music to mask the noise. Monitor their behaviour for signs of distress and consult your vet if needed. Be aware of local firework schedules to prepare in advance and help your horse feel safer.
