❗❗As we approach the Christmas holidays, please ensure an adequate supply of medication for your horse. Please place your orders for any necessary repeat medications as soon as possible to ensure availability throughout the festive season.

To avoid any inconvenience, we advise collecting your medication directly from the practice. Postal services may experience delays and during this busy period, picking up in person will ensure you have what you need.

Please allow up to 48 hours for veterinary authorisation and processing of your prescription request. Thank you for your attention to this matter and we wish you and your horse a wonderful holiday season.

Researchers have made a massive breakthrough in identifying the likely cause of equine grass sickness. This is fantastic news and we can't wait to see where this new discovery will take our ability to treat this often devastating disease.

We are delighted to share the news from Professor Bruce McGorum that researchers, involving The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies’ Equine Hospital team, have identified the likely source of equine grass sickness.

Grass sickness is a devastating equine condition, the cause of which has been undiscovered for more than 100 years. However, researchers believe they have identified a neurotoxic enzyme, present in pasture, that may be responsible for the disease. This neurotoxic enzyme is also present in some snake venoms, suggesting that treatments in development for the effects of snake venom may be adapted for the recovery of horses affected by grass sickness.

Professor Bruce McGorum said: “Identifying a probable cause of equine grass sickness represents a significant breakthrough. We hope this discovery will lead to novel treatments and improved diagnostics for this devastating condition. We are very grateful for the generous support from horse owners, veterinary surgeons, scientists, charities and funding bodies."

Professor Scott Pirie said: “This work has clearly demonstrated the value of considering disease pathology, even subtle structural changes only visible at extremely high magnification, in the quest to identify the causes of disease, particularly those attributable to the action of toxins."

This exciting discovery is an enormous step forward in our understanding and treatment of this devastating disease.

🎆 Fireworks & horse safety 🎆

As the firework season approaches, keep your horse calm by ensuring their stable or paddock is securely enclosed. Create a quiet, familiar space with their usual bedding, feed, and water. If possible, stay with them for reassurance, and play soft music to mask the noise. Monitor their behaviour for signs of distress and consult your vet if needed. Be aware of local firework schedules to prepare in advance and help your horse feel safer.

As the leaves change and autumn sets in, it’s important to remember that laminitis doesn’t take a season off. Even though the weather is cooler, horses are still at risk.
Laminitis can be triggered by factors such as changes in diet and rich pastures. Stay vigilant and keep an eye out for any signs of discomfort in your horses.

What to watch for:
🍂 Lameness
🍂 Heat in the hooves
🍂 Changes in behaviour

Prevention tips
🍁 Be mindful of rich pasture and sudden changes in diet
🍁 Keep up with regular trims and hoof health checks
🍁 Keep your horse’s weight in check to avoid additional stress on their hooves

Keeping your horse healthy through every season is key to preventing laminitis.

Ever wonder why your horse might be spooking at things that seem perfectly normal? Here’s a quick rundown on why your horse might be jumping at shadows:

👻 Health issues: If spooking seems sudden or severe, it's worth checking in with your vet. Discomfort, pain or eye issues can make a horse more jumpy

🎃 Heightened senses: Horses have incredibly sharp senses and are naturally wired to be alert to potential threats

👻 New environments: Moving to a new place or changing their routine can make your horse feel uneasy. Any new sight or sound can be a source of anxiety

🎃 Past experiences: Sometimes, past traumas or negative experiences can cause a horse to be more reactive to certain stimuli

👻 Lack of confidence: Horses with less training or confidence might spook more easily

If you are worried about your horse’s spooking, drop us a message or give us a call.

How is equine asthma managed and prevented?

Equine asthma can be prevented and managed with proper stable and environmental care. This includes ensuring good ventilation, using dust-free bedding, and providing high-quality, low-dust hay. Regular turnout and minimising exposure to irritants such as mould and pollen can prevent flare-ups. Collaborating with your vet for a personalised management plan is crucial for effectively addressing equine asthma and improving the wellbeing of affected horses.
