Did you know EMS is a growing concern for horses, particularly those that are ‘good doers’ and with a history of laminitis?

EMS is a complex condition that affects a horse's ability to properly regulate insulin and can lead to serious issues like laminitis, obesity and metabolic disturbances. The key signs to watch for include:

✅ Increased fat deposits, especially around the neck and rump (think “cresty neck”)
✅ Difficulty losing weight, even with limited feed
✅ Frequent laminitis or hoof sensitivity
✅ Lethargy and lack of performance

If you suspect your horse may be showing signs of EMS, it’s essential to consult with your vet for proper diagnosis and treatment. Early intervention can make all the difference in preventing long-term health issues.

On this rainy summers day we wanted to share a bit of a good news story with you ☺

Earlier this year, we first met Axel when his owner noticed a cloudiness in his left eye. During a routine zone visit, we found he had a mature cataract and likely reduced - or even lost - vision in that eye. To explore treatment options, Axel was referred to the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies to consult with a European and RCVS Specialist in Ophthalmology.

Following a thorough examination, it was confirmed that Axel was unfortunately blind in his left eye. Due to chronic uveitis and a detached retina, cataract surgery wasn’t a suitable option. With no chance of restoring vision and the likelihood of ongoing inflammation and discomfort, we discussed the option of enucleation (removal of the eye) to ensure Axel's long-term comfort.

Axel's dedicated owner made the kind and compassionate decision to go ahead with the procedure, prioritising his well-being and quality of life.

The good news? The surgery can be performed while standing, right in the comfort of his own stable - no stressful trips or hospital stays needed. With sedation, local anaesthetic, and a supportive headstand, the procedure was carried out smoothly.

Axel was incredibly brave and well-mannered throughout the procedure, which was carried out by our dedicated equine vets Ines Craveiro and Ryan O'Connor. Just 12 days later, we saw him again for a follow-up and to remove his stitches and he’s been adapting beautifully to life with one eye. We’re so proud of Axel and grateful to his owner for trusting us with his care ❤️

🌞 Summer's Heating Up – Is Your Horse Hydrated? 🚰

As temperatures rise, so does the risk of dehydration in horses. Proper hydration is essential for performance, digestion, and overall health — especially during training,
travel and turnout in the summer sun.

🔹 A horse can drink 25–55 litres of water per day in hot weather
🔹 Dehydration can lead to colic, poor performance, and heat stress
🔹 Encourage drinking with clean, cool water and electrolytes if needed

✅ Check water sources daily
✅ Offer soaked hay or wet feeds
✅ Know the signs of dehydration: tacky gums, reduced skin elasticity, dark urine

Travel safely with your horse this summer

Planning a summer trip with your horse? Ensure a smooth and safe journey with these essential tips:

✅ Pre-Trip Prep:
• Check your horse’s health (vet check-up, vaccinations up to date)
• Review your travel route (rest stops, emergency contacts)
• Pack essential documents (passport, health certificates)
• Avoid travelling during the hottest parts of the day
• If travelling abroad, make sure essential legal documentation and health testing is planned in good time

✅ Transport Safety:
• Inspect the trailer/horsebox (brakes, tyres, flooring, safety features)
• Secure your horse in a well-fitting halter and lead rope
• Use travel boots/wraps for leg protection and a tail bandage

✅ During the Journey:
• Offer water regularly (stay hydrated in the heat)
• Make stops for breaks every 3-4 hours, allowing your horse to lower their head e.g. offer small feed from the floor
• Monitor your horse for signs of stress or discomfort

✅ Upon Arrival:
• Set up a safe, comfortable environment (shade, water, fresh hay)
• Give your horse time to rest and adjust before exercise
• Check for injuries or any signs of fatigue

True or False?

❌ False – The horse’s digestive system is designed to process small, frequent meals throughout the day, as they are natural grazers. Their system is built to handle continuous intake of forage rather than large, infrequent meals.

If you have questions about your horse’s diet, weight, or digestive health, our team is here to help. Contact us today to book a consult or speak with our equine vets.

🪱 Spring into action with parasite control! 🪱

Spring has sprung and so have the parasites! Warmer weather means increased parasite activity, so it’s the perfect time to check if your horse’s deworming plan is up to date.

A faecal worm egg count test is the best way to determine if any treatment is necessary reducing unnecessary deworming and lowering the pressures that drive resistance.
Routinely giving dewormers without checking worm burden is bad practice as well as being wasteful. May is a key month to assess and adjust your deworming strategy. Let’s keep your horse healthy with appropriate parasite control.
