Is puppy training important?
People ask, why would I bother, he is pretty good for his age or I have no problems so there is no point. But both of these views are not seeing the long term future of the dog. Training early is an investment in the future. It is putting in firm foundations that will payback tenfold when the dog is older, when it hits the adolescent stage or is unlucky enough to lose its confidence through a dog attack or other unfortunate event. Firm foundations make for an easier life, they put in the training that means everyday problems are avoided or can be removed if they appear. They also make your dog smarter. The more your pup uses its brain the more neural connections it makes and the more mentally able it becomes. Training early amongst other dogs helps reduce the distraction of other dogs and reduces the dog play frustration that some dogs develop. Therefore training your puppy is essential to ensure you have the best dog possible.

Poodles, doodles and any other dog that has regular trips to the groomers, need to be prepared for every part of the grooming process. Today I thought I would chat about preping for drying and grooming. One of the first things you need to introduce, is grooming up high. All groomers use tables, so it essential that we get the pups used to being groomed at table level. If you want to use a kitchen table, put a non slip bath mat on it so the dog does not slide around, or consider buying a grooming table. They are not as expensive as they used to be and can be an investment for both the dog and your back. The one in the picture, costs about £80 on the usual shopping sites. Slowly introduce the dog to being high up, with rewards before you groom. Be aware of the body language, some dogs will cower or freeze, so go slow and gently. Your groomer will probably also use a head and belly restraint, so it can be helpful to introduce these at home first, before the groomer uses them. Some groomers also use head snoods, to cover the ears. These easy-to-make or cheap-to-buy items also need to be introduced. They could be worn when the dog is eating (something spaniel owners know all about) to develop a positive association with the snood. Finally, hunt out your hairdryer and get your dog used to the sound and feel of the warm air. The blowers that groomers use are very high speed, so slowly introduce faster blowing speeds with your hairdryer. Finally, they are used very close to the skin, so make sure you have your hairdryer on the lowest heat setting and hold it close to the body (at a safe distance) to warm and blow the water off the hairs. The more you practise, the less stressed your dog will be at the groomer, and they may even enjoy the attention. Weekly practice grooming at home will also ensure your pup looks wonderful too. If you need any support with grooming your dog, feel free to get in touch. We are here to help.

27/04/2024

In our busy lives, we like to relax and live in the moment, letting the day's stresses drift away. We humans do this by taking a relaxing bath, taking a nice walk in nature, listening to music, or having a good chat. Dogs can also find day-to-day living stressful and would also like to destress, but how do we offer them the opportunities to do this? The answer is the decompression walk. This walk differs from ordinary walks; it is no toy, no training, no human play, dog-led walk which presents opportunities for the dog to participate in calming behaviours such as sniffing. It should be done at a wandering pace, allowing the dog to swap sides and range around you, dragging a long line or off-lead. Your dog will love that you are giving so much time to sniffing and scenting the air and the ground. Concentrating on sniffing allows the dog to lower its heart rate and calm. The location should be newer to the dog but not busy with other dogs or people. A slow walk around the edge of an open field or through an open wood would be ideal. If you want to know more about the decompression walk, there is a lot of information on the net.

Our Doggy Tale

Started in 2013, as a small training class, Curabull Canine Training has gone from strength to strength. We now train up to 90 dogs a week, in puppy, intermediate, advanced pet obedience as well as Fun agility. We have experience of training a very wide range of dogs from Akitas to Austrailain Shepherds, from Cockerpoos to Chihuahuas , we are happy to train big or small, young or old, bold or shy. We have an excellent success rate with rescues and difficult dogs and enjoy the challenges these bring. The classes are based at Burnopfield and leadgate on Thursday and Friday evenings. Agility is held on Saturday mornings at Houghall College. Mechelle is a qualified animal behaviourist (Royal Veterinary College, University of Edinburgh) as well as a dog trainer and has over 25 years of professional dog experience, she is also co-author of the K999.direct first aid app. Mechelle was nomated for Kennel Club National Trainer of the Year 2016 and shortlisted for Trainer of the Year in 2017. Amanda is the other half of the team and is a qualified Kennel Club Good Citizen Assessor and has been training dogs for over 25 years.

We also undertake behavioural consultations, in your own home. These intense sessions use a common sense approach, based in the most up to date scientific techniques, backed up by a wealth of practical knowledge. They are often by Veterinary Referral and are covered by some canine insurance companies.
