Congratulations Professor Per Jensen, Linköpings Universitet, Sweden.
I have followed his work for a very long time and it’s wonderful to see someone whom is concentrating on pet animals behaviour and the interaction with us humans received this international accolade. Important work!

Congratulations to Professor Per Jensen who has been awarded the UFAW Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Animal Welfare Science to celebrate his ground-breaking work in domestication, epigenetics and stress, and to recognise the influential role he has played in supporting applied ethology and welfare science worldwide.

You can hear Per talk about his work at the UFAW Online Animal Welfare Conference 2023.

Dog and horse ”au pair”
A possibility to spend a year or just over in The English countryside.

We can offer an opportunity for a student. You get to learn behaviour modification techniques, clicker training of horses and dogs (applicable to all animals), breeding of dogs, grooming, riding once a week.

We offer accommodation in separate building, food and pocket money.

We are interested in someone whom wants to further their knowledge in especially horse and dog behaviour and training.

We expect you to be positive, keen to learn, independent and easy to collaborate with. This is a fantastic opportunity for the right person.

We expect you to help out around the yard with dogs and horses. But you will come away feeling you have developed a lot and learnt new skills.

You might be a university student in an animal field whom wants to take a break for a year (or maybe just over the summer). Or you might have finished your college studies in Animal Care and you are ready for a year of practice before you head off to Uni.

I am a KC Assured breeder and a horse and dog behaviour consultant working closely with veterinarians. I show dogs on top level so there is plenty to learn for the right person.

We have had someone every year since 2013 and we have plenty of references.

I am from Sweden so I speak Swedish too. We have had many wonderful young people from Sweden over the years but you can be from anywhere. Your personality and interests are far more important.

Please apply for this position by sending a DM. Please tell us how you would benefit from being here.

Please share with people you think would like this opportunity.

" I can attest to the fact that hacking, or taking your horse out for a leisurely ride outside of the arena, is incredibly important for the overall health and well-being of your horse.

Not only does hacking provide a much-needed change of scenery and mental stimulation for your horse, but it also offers numerous physical benefits as well. When your horse is ridden on varied terrains, such as hills and uneven ground, it helps to strengthen its tendons, muscles, and joints.

Hacking can also improve your horse's cardiovascular fitness and respiratory health, as they are required to maintain a steady pace for an extended period of time. This can help to prevent conditions such as obesity, colic, and respiratory diseases.

In addition, hacking can also help to prevent boredom and burnout in your horse, which can lead to behavioral issues and reduced performance in the arena. By giving your horse a break from the repetitive training exercises in the arena, they can have fun exploring new surroundings and enjoy a more relaxed ride.

It is important to note that when hacking, it is essential to use proper equipment and take necessary safety precautions to avoid injury to you and your horse.

In conclusion, hacking is a vital aspect of your horse's overall training regimen. It offers numerous physical and mental benefits, including strengthening tendons, muscles, and joints, improving cardiovascular and respiratory health, and preventing boredom and burnout. Incorporating hacking into your horse's routine can help to ensure that they remain healthy, happy, and performing at their best. " - KPA Horse

Another of our favorite pattern games from the AMAZING Leslie McDevitt!!! 🦄

Pattern Games: Super Bowls 🥣

Super Bowls is a game that comes from Leslie McDevitt’s extremely popular “Control Unleashed” series. This is a pattern game. Pattern games are simple sets of exercises that provide a structured and predictable pattern to help dogs adjust to changes in their environment.

❗You Need
✅2-5 plates or bowls
✅High value treats
✅Your dog 🤗

Step 1: Teach the Game

⭐Set out 2-5 plates with a 6’ distance between each plate

⭐ Place a treat on one plate and let your dog eat it

⭐When your dog looks at you, return eye contact, smile, and walk to the next plate

⭐Place a treat on that plate

😀When they look up at your, return eye contact, smile, and walk to the next plate

▶️ Repeat until you can go all the way down the line and back to the first plate

Once you have completed the sequence three times, proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: Change the environment or stations

🔂 Repeat the game in a very mildly distracting environment. Instead of using plates, use any station outside that is naturally recurring like park benches, cars parked along the sidewalk or poured cement sidewalk blocks, trees, or lamp posts.

💡If your dog engages with something in the environment prior to looking up at you, just wait. Let them process the environmental change before returning their attention to you.

💡If your dog is unable to return to the game, they are not ready to be this close to distractions yet or the environment is too overwhelming.

Your pup must be having fun in low distraction and low-stress environments before moving to more stimulating environments. 😄

Lovely afternoon with fika* at Perryhill Farm Shop, then a walk at Ashdown Forest. It feels magical to actually be able to do things again after my two hip replacements! Minnie, whom hasn’t been out and about as much as I normally do with my dogs were so good! ♥️🥳👏
She is a beautiful handfull of a lady and with a broken toe at a young age and a mummy whom hasn’t been well, training has been sat on the back burner. She is a very trainable type and has a fantastic temperament, luckily, so I can only seeing us going from strength to strength now. I am looking forward to growing with her.

Yummy treats used while training today was: .se (lamb creme in a tube)

Thank you .orchards for yummy treats for us humans! 😃

* Fika = eating something light or a cake, drinking non alcoholic beverages, often in company with friends or family
Swedish (important) word 😄
