🐾 update, Wednesday 8am. Bella has made it through the night, she seems comfortable. Now we need her to eat 🙏🏻🐾
Where do I start. I really shouldn’t be doing this now, I should get some sleep and post when I feel a bit more rational. But we need funds, sadly bills at this point prioritise sleep.
Today I have seen possibly one of the worst, if not THE worst cases of neglect I have ever seen in a dog that is alive. It started with a call regarding a dog in a groomers in an awful state, from a lovely lady who regularly helps us out, in short she had started a groom on a dog in a very poor state but quickly realised this was much more than a case of a dog in dire need of a groom. I advised her to contact the RSPCA because she was very clear that there was no way this dog could be returned to her owner. The RSPCA advised she have a chat with the owner, they would not be attending. Because i know the lady i knew if she says it's bad, it's bad. So we did the usual 'do whatever it takes', cutting a bit out here the owner was contacted and agreed to sign the dog over to us.
The dog is Bella, a 14 year old sh*tzu. So badly matted you couldnt even tell where her face was. She was covered in sores and clearly had badly infected ears, and i mean badly. She was taken to the vets who initially made an appointment for this evening but on realising how bad she was, saw her immediately.
At this point we had no idea if Bella would make it or should we just let her go. She was malnourished and unable to even drink. On speaking to the vet we agreed to run blood tests, to check on her organ function. If it came back that her organs were struggling then we wouldnt put her through anymore. The next 30 minutes seemed to go on for eternity. Due to Bella being severely dehydrated the smount of blood they could take was limited. However results were positive, no obvious signs of damage and her heart was strong.
Because the nurses couldnt touch her without it causing pain we decided to put Bella under GA and the vets would dematt her and conduct a physical examination, the risks of anaesthetic were high, there was a 50/50 chance we would lose her during this procedure.
But our little warrior queen is a fighter, she did make it through and despite everything she must have decided today was not her time. The news from the examination is quite simply, horrific. She has lost one of her eyes, not through surgery but through it being eaten away by infection. I don’t mean she’s lost the sight in it, I mean the actual eye has gone. The other eye is severely ulcerated, she may or may not be blind in that eye. Her ears are overwhelmed with infection, this may or may not have resulted in deafness. Her little body is painful and sore, she weighs just 5.2kg.
There are a lot of ‘may or may nots’ currently, medication and pain relief is the only answer we can give just now. We have to face facts, Bella may not survive this. She needs to eat and drink, the vets are hopeful she will do this by herself come tomorrow. If she doesn’t then we have to cross that bridge when we come to it. In the same way if her eye and ears don’t heal, decisions will have to be made.
We have to be really careful and really sure that any decisions we make, we make for Bella and not based on what we want for her. We want her to know a life without pain, we want her to know that she matters, that she is loved. I am aware this is crazy, but my fear this afternoon was her going to heaven in the state she was, would other dogs reject her because she was in such a mess. I couldn’t bare the thought of that. How blooming ridiculous is that thought process!! I had to give my head a huge wobble and remind myself that none of this is about what we can bare, it’s about Bella and what is best for her, rather than what we want for her because we will feel s**t if she passes without getting the things we wish for her.
This is also not about her owner, or the failings of the RSPCA to act. Both of these things will be pursued, but not here.
This is about a little girl, a tiny little girl with the courage and heart of a lion and the strength of an Ox, this is about doing right by her.
This is also about the kindness of strangers and what they will do for someone else’s dog. I can never thank the ladies who helped Bella today enough, they are the heroes of this story. Tonight Bella is wrapped in a blanket in the arms of kindness. If she gets called by the angels overnight then so be it, we hope she doesn’t, I don’t believe this will happen, I believe she wants to fight on and if this is what is best for her then we will fight on with her.
For now though, sleep tight little one, the sun will rise tomorrow and maybe, just maybe there will be a c***k of light just for you ❤️
