We have well accomplished Jenny Richards coming down for an IGP obedience workshop! Book through the link below!

In the last 2 years Jenny has qualified for and competed at 3 x World Championships with her Malinois Avonwolf Deliverance. FMBB in Romania 23, FCI in Slovenia 23 and FMBB Italy in 24. At the FMBB in Romania 2023 she was the first female GB competitor to gain a qualifying score at this competition and only the second GB IGP team to do so. She will be entering more qualifiers this year and next and also has 2 up and coming youngsters in training for the sport. Jenny has also competed an Australian Shepard in IGP which is of course a non typical breed for the sport. Her approach to training focuses on enhancing relationship and communication between the dog and handler team.

We need our dogs to growl so we know when they are close to their limit. That they really need us to listen and things are getting serious.

They are never a warning we should seek to remove but one we should be glad to hear. Because that’s what’s going to prevent things from escalating further.

Yogi came to stay to work through some human reactivity. During his stay we assessed what was contributing and causing the reactivity, in his case it was fear. We then worked to counter condition and create more neutral associations with people along side creating an alternative response when he sees a person. The clips shown here we were working in a busy area which we’d gradually built up towards. It’s important to initially start in low distraction environment where he is able to think and remain below threshold in order to learn and retain information. We switched between more active focus and engagement to exploring the environment and relaxing into it. You can see his ears going as he is aware of the triggers behind him but he is able to remain engaged. As he turns to look he then chooses to disengage which is exactly what we’d been working on! Often I get asked how do you have 2 malinois in the house….most of the time they’re like this at home. We make sure they’re fulfilled through work, play, training and free time to be a dog through out the day. You only get one chance at first impressions! Puppy socialisation. The way we introduce our pups to things at the age can shape their view in the world. Many owners put a lot of time into teaching sit first…are there other things we should be prioritising? After all we can teach sit at any age and we don’t get the opportunity to redo first impressions. Make sure you follow to make sure you see the upcoming series on socialising your puppy! Can your dog do both? Both are useful skills to have. If we have a dog that’s constantly switched on it can be extremely difficult for them to settle and you may find they become easily frustrated as thier arousal and excitement surges.On the other hand if you have a dog that is difficult to switch on or motivate around distractions it can make areas like recall/lead walking and general day to day experiences stressful.
