Kylok9 Canine Behaviourist and Coach Life is great when we have a happy dog and carer. The techniques I use may vary depending on the dog and behavioural issue.
(3)

I work with each client to identify their dog's problem behaviours and explore the client's options in respect of that behaviour. I only provide force-free advice to aid coaching and behavioural modification using positive reward based methods. Every dog is an individual and I tailor each session around the dog and carer's needs. As a behaviourist, I ask all clients to consider the fact that behav

ioural issues can be due to a medical problem that has not yet been identified and may need veterinary advice. I will only give advice to a client once I have looked at their dog's case history form and discussed the issues. We all want to enjoy and share happy and healthy lives with our dogs. Let's make this happen! I am fully insured and work to a strict confidentiality policy that you can trust.

Who wants to become a volunteer for Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare.

I need help/support at Paws in the Park and South of England show this year ( Ardingly show ground).

We have a stand giving free pet advice (90% dog questions) I need back up to help weigh dogs, check microchips chat to people about their pets and be part of the team. Induction will be a few hours, so you learn more of what we are trying to achieve in the community.

Thanks

Man behaving very badly.. not the dog!
Just remember… it’s not the dog giving us a hard time… it’s, the dog is having a hard time.

There is always a reason WHY our dogs are presenting a particular behaviour! Question the emotion, look at body language etc

Mr. Hall uses outdated methods and dominance to 'train' dogs for nothing more than ENTERTAINMENT
He has NO formal recognised qualifications, and is setting science based dog training back by decades.
His remarks such as 'No nonsense approach', 'Puff your chest out a bit', 'Let the dog know who's boss' 'Give a quick lead flick' "hes being naughty" are from the Barbra Woodhouse era!
Please DO NOT try to copy, any of what you see, as he sets dogs up for failure, putting them in dangerous, and uncomfortable situations.
These out of date methods may seem like a quick fix, but the dogs underlying emotion hasn't changed, just suppressed 😢
Behaviour modification takes time, knowledge, patience and understanding. ( all of what Mr Hall sadly lacks)

It’s going to be an horrendous start to 2024 ❤️🐾 owners, vets, rescues and the Bully’s

From a vet 😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️😭😭😭

On the 31st of December, myself and colleagues across the country will be obliged to humanely destroy dogs for the way they look.

Imagine being presented with a dog like one of the two below. A friendly, happy dog, who wags its tail as you talk to it and stroke its head. You have to restrain it, for an intravenous catheter to be placed in its leg. Some will just sit and patiently let you perform the task, others will wriggle and fight the restraint. Sometimes, we have to sedate them, because they get stressed and won’t tolerate being held. Sometimes, they’ll bark, scratch you, growl and snarl, bare their teeth, or worse case scenario, bite.

This is done with no malice, or because they’re evil, it’s because they’re frightened. They have no idea what’s going on, where they are, or who you are. Their actions are not premeditated, pre-planned. They happen in the moment, as a reaction to the environment and what’s happening to them.

Any dog breed can have these reactions, not just large Bully breeds.

However, because our government has deemed Bully Breeds (who fit certain criteria) dangerous, they will become a banned breed. This means they cannot be rehomed or sold on. So what happens with all the bullies in rescues that haven’t been rehomed in time? What happens to all the bullies that are abandoned by their owners because they don’t want to comply with the rules?

They’re bought to us, as a profession, to be euthanised.

As vet nurses, we hold these beautiful creatures, whilst they are either sedated or have an intravenous catheter placed. We tell them how good they are, that they are loved and that we are so so sorry. We offer them some food, no one wants to die on an empty stomach. And when the time comes for the lethal injection, we’re there for them, holding them whilst they take their last breath, feeling the weight of their body press into ours as they become limp. We stand back, and look at the lifeless body on the floor, of a beautiful, friendly dog, who’s been destroyed for how it looks.

That’s it. Deed done.

It’s soul destroying, tears are shed for a dog you’ve never met before, but have fallen in love with and feel so desperately sorry for. No words describe the feeling you experience in this moment, and it’s something I wish I could protect others in my profession from, but I can’t.

New years this year isn’t something I’m looking forward to, so rather than judge me for that, please try to understand. As a profession, we have the most harrowing time upon us.

AWARENESS…. Please be careful what you use near your pets.

🐕 We've seen an alarming spike in the number of cases of dogs coming into contact with hormonal cream containing oestrogen (HRT). Since the start of the year we have diagnosed five dogs with secondary exposure to HRT.

HRT is widely used to relieve the symptoms of the menopause and applying it through a skin patch, gel or cream, instead of orally, are increasingly popular ways to administer it.

Read more from our Clinical Director, Gerry Polton, about the effects of dogs being exposed to HRT >> https://bit.ly/46Lnyyc

🌿 Green Clay for Wounds, Abscesses, Hot Spots and Paw Pads! 🐾
✨ Green clay possesses a unique ability to expedite healing by encouraging the migration of epithelial tissue (superficial pink/white tissue) across the wound, filling the void. It has also demonstrated exceptional efficacy in helping to knit together wounded paw pads while accelerating healing.

Unique Healing Abilities:
* 🦠 Antibacterial: Fights off unwanted microbes.
* 🌪️ Absorbent: Draws out toxins and prevents infections.
* 🚫 Deters flies.
* 🌿 Prevents debris: Maintains a clean healing environment.

Application Tips:
Gently apply a generous amount of dry green clay onto the wounded area to enhance and expedite the healing process. Animals typically don't attempt to lick it off, ensuring uninterrupted healing. If an animal tries to lick it off it is probably not suited to them, in which case offer turmeric powder.

Make a Poultice:
If you want the drawing properties of green clay: Create a healing poultice by mixing a small amount of water with green clay to effectively help draw foreign matter from the wound.💧

Alternative Remedy:
If green clay isn't your animals choice, offer turmeric powder—an antibacterial and wound-healing alternative (though it may stain fabric). 🌈

Long-Term Care:
Be mindful of potential drying effects on healthy skin. If this occurs, apply coconut oil to keep the skin moisturised and supple. 🥥🌟

Your dog may not of had a seizure, however you should always research and be aware of the dangers of all medication.

Also check your own medications too🙂

It’s a gamble you guys 🎲

When you bring your seizing dog to the vet and the FIRST question is not “what do you use for flea and tick meds?” Then you know we have a big problem here.

Most people tell me that when their dog has a seizure or any neurological issue they take the dog to the vet and after tons of bloodwork and test after test with a clean bill of health that their vet never, not once, asked about flea and ticks meds that might have been given.

How are consumers ever going to learn about the dangers of this product if vets don’t even CONSIDER that this drug MIGHT be part of the problem? When you get a new puppy and you go to the vet guess what is in your puppy pack? Yup. One of these chewables.

I’m not sure what else to do so I just spread the word. It’s all we can do.

Please be aware of this!!

I saw a kid walking his lovely lab having a great time and then he gave him a big old yank on the lead, which was on a collar and my heart did that achy breaky thing.

Underneath that strong looking neck, are some vital life supporting structures connecting your dog’s gut and nervous system to the brain.

If you have a big dog that lunges or pulls on the lead, a collar is not going to stop him. A harness is not going to make him lunge or pull more. However, it will distribute his weight through a part of the body designed to protect the organs instead of the full pressure being on the neck and all it contains.

A yank on the lead can cause emotional associations that lead to behaviour issues and pressure around the neck can cause multiple physical injuries some terminal.

With thanks for the illustration and we recommend https://perfect-fit-dog-harness.com/harness.html

Neck injuries include bruising, whiplash, headaches, crushed trachea, damage to the larynx, fractured vertebrae, neck and spinal cord injury and paralysis or neurological problems.

If the parasympathetic nervous system is tweaked through a tug to the neck the vagal reflex can cause instant death.

Higher intraocular pressure can cause serious injury to dogs already suffering thin corneas, glaucoma, or eye injuries.

It has also been linked to hypothyroidism as the collar rests on the area of the thyroid gland causing damage.

It can impinge the nerves supplying the front legs leading to an abnormal sensation in the feet that can present as a dog that starts licking their feet. Often misdiagnosed as having allergies.

A dog's epidermis is only 3-5 cells thick, in humans it is at least 10-15 cells thick.

Excessive pressure can cause damage to the dog's eyes, larynx and thyroid gland.

Particularly risky for puppies under 6 months, a time during which the cartilage of the trachea is still delicate.

A dog that feels pain and discomfort on saying hello to another dog, or trying to sniff the environment, is in danger of associating other dogs or other stimuli in the environment with pain and discomfort resulting in a dog that we would label “reactive” and/or “aggressive” when on lead, “but ok when off lead”.

Do you dread taking your dog for a walk? Whether your dog is still a pup or fully grown, there are steps you can take to help your pet become the perfect walking partner. Be aware of this mistake that many owners unknowingly make and 10 reasons why I recommend avoiding this popular type of leash.

💯 back this video! Really worth a listen. NO to aversive training and all the dominance rubbish. There is no need to abuse a dog in the name of training… and certainly not in my training!

21/10/2023

One of the most challenging aspects of being a reactive dog guardian are the limitations placed on my dog by society.

The idea that my dog doesn’t deserve freedom and the safety to be a dog, go on walks, or sniff the grass, simply because he is not like somebody else’s dog.
Because his comfort zone is bigger, or looks differently.
Because he has specific boundaries; ones that are different than another dog’s.

I have yet to understand how someone can honestly believe that my dog doesn’t belong, simply because he doesn’t fit into this impossible mold of a “perfect dog.”

I can do everything right - the training, the management, the safety layers, seek out on-leash areas where my dog should be safe to enjoy.

I don’t let my reactive dog run around off-leash (this would be irresponsible and unsafe to do so.) I’m not walking in close proximity to other dogs or people, which could put everyone in a precarious situation.
I do my best to seek out areas where he has enough space and is comfortable (not barking and lunging). This means that we miss out on a lot of fun hikes, beautiful trails, and exciting pet store shopping trips. That’s OK; we have adjusted his world to ensure he, and others, are safe in it.

Yet I am still hit with a brick wall of judgement, and a bitter lack of acceptance.

“If your dog doesn’t like other dogs sniffing him, you should leave him at home.”
”Your dog is aggressive, you should try training him.”
”Your dog shouldn’t be allowed out of the house.”

These accusations cut me to the core. My dog is a good dog. He may be flawed, he may not be ‘perfect’ in your eyes, but neither am I.
I’m willing to be you aren’t either.

Someone’s flaws don’t make them any less deserving of a happy, enriched, and quality life.

You don’t understand my dog’s boundaries?
That’s ok; you can still attempt to respect them.
You don’t understand why he needs space?
I get it; I didn’t understand either, at first. But you can still grant him that space, without fully appreciating the need for it,

My dog is reactive, he’s not damaged.

He deserves to live his life, and feel safe to do so.
