Now remember I am not a vet or medical trained just a clever dog trainer/owner who likes to study and share. This may or may-not help you but here goes! 😊

Don't forget the clocks go back this Saturday 28th, so sadly the night will become darker, so its time to check your torch's.

Do you have a reflector on their collar or a glowing collar? (Hopefully not a flashing one) Do they need charging?

Some dogs especially puppies don't like the dark so some extra encouragement for the late night time wee might be needed, even my soon to be 8 year old will stand at the door and go "I cant possibly go down the garden in the dark there might be a cat"!

Also its time to think about checking their winter coats ( if your dog wears them!) remember they are a year older now, if they were puppies growing last winter the coat might now be to small. Try before needed.

With all the rain we have had and the more to come some areas where you walk may have already become very wet and muddy, extra towels in the boot for a dry off before getting into the car, I forgot mine on Sunday, now I have a wet smelly car!

It wont be long before the gritters are out, so remember to check and wash their feet if you street walk

I know most of us are trying to save on the fuel bills but leaving a light on if you have to leave them for a while once its dark would be a blessing for your dogs.

Little things to think about before needed. 😀

There has been a few discussions on Facebook about the use of crates, some information was good others well…..
So, I thought I would do a bit on crates and why. Now please remember I am not a vet or have medical degree so if you have a health question ask your vet!

Crates are your own personal preference, some people despise them others think they are very needed, I guess it depends on your lifestyle, home and even your dog.
But some stage you are going to have leave your puppy/dog at home alone. It inevitable really when you think about it! Shopping, Dr’s, Hospital appointment, work meetings, social life! So, what are you going to do, leave unsecure and hope for the best?!
I’m happy to say I use a crate for both mine both in the home and in the car and have done since they were 8 weeks old. There is no harm in using one if used correctly and always for the benefit of the dog for her to be able to settle down, to feel safe, or to be safe like in the car which in my opinion is a must.
You need to do some crate training from a young age (if possible) I did from the start, and I still have mine up, both my dogs go in and out of their own free will, the door is always open and my youngest puts herself in the crate at bedtime.
There is no right or wrong in using a crate, if done correctly it’s not harmful to your dog and can in some cases can provide a safe haven for those who are nervous especially if you have visitors or children.

And you must always use a crate when traveling, yes, they make car harnesses and even boxes but how safe are they, remember 999 are there to preserve life, if a dog is in a crate they can be moved out of the car, dog is secure and then dealt with. If they are in a harness, where are they going?? What are the 999-crew going to do with the dog? Also, if you break down on a motorway your rescue recovery will only take contained dogs.
And check you car insurance some may not cover dogs in harnesses. (she hates her photo taken!)

I have been asked to help re-home a small male terrier type dog, he is a neutered black and tan and about 2 and half years old. He is currently in a foster home with other dogs, he is dog friendly, he has previously lived with children over 8 unfortunalty we do not know about cats. He is a sweet little lad, not very barky a bit nervous around new people to start with, loves to play and good on a lead when out, also crate trained. Please message me if intrested and ten will pass your info to foster home.

I really should not have to repeat this every year but...
Please don't walk your dogs in the day during the heat and...

DONT LEAVE YOUR DOG IN THE CAR WHILE YOU GO SHOPPING
I WILL BREAK YOUR WINDOW AND TAKE YOUR DOG TO SAFETY then report you for animal cruelty!

Naughty dogs!

Is there such a thing as a naughty/bad behaved dog? Sadly, yes there is although it’s not always the dog’s fault. Common bad behaviour issues including jumping up at people, pulling on the lead, fear, anxiety, including separation-related are just a small few of the main issues many people are dealing with. If these are left, they only get worse.

A behaviour that is either good or bad becomes a learnt behaviour. Many of these behaviours have become more common even more so since Covid. The lock down and working from home led to rescue centers rehoming almost all their stock which then encouraged people to take on any dog available and gave some puppy farmers the idea to breed even more and then charging a ridiculous price which sadly people paid! Sadly, this has led to a huge amount going back into rescue as they were not suitable for real life needs.
Many Covid puppies were poorly socialized when at a young age, leading to long term anxiety, nervousness which can then lead to further issues. Many returned to work leaving dogs alone resulting in separation anxiety.
Many new dog owners were inexperienced there were no puppy/dog training venues open which led to difficulty. Like many trainers after Covid I found that there were families struggling with their now older puppy that was showing signs of training issues. Sadly not everyone could get an appointment with a trainer/behaviorist. Some managed to get appointments with “new qualified on-line” behaviorists which in some cases made situations worse. Because of this rescue centres are overflowing with lockdown puppies with behaviour issues, vets have seen an increase on euthanizing unwanted dogs with behaviour issues.
It’s easy to blame the dog for his/her behaviour but in the end it’s the owner’s responsibility, the excuse of no time, no money, can’t find a trainer really is pitiful. You wanted a dog now take responsibility!
Find a qualified, experienced, insured known dog trainer/behaviorist who uses reward-based methods, these are food, toy or praise for good behaviour while removing for bad. Aversive training methods (punishment) will cause fear, anxiety, stress and aggression. This is wrong and will not in any way prevent the behaviour you are trying to correct.
Most of the above trainers are very busy and you should expect to wait. If they have many free appointments I would wonder, why!!

Keeping safe and warm in winter months. ❄🌂💧
Many years ago, we never had to worry about our dogs in winter. Dogs use to live outside in all conditions in sheds and kennels, but over the years we have domesticated this once was wild animal so now we have to take responsibility for his health & welfare in winter months. If your dog is used to living inside don’t leave him out for long periods once the temperature has dropped, like us they feel the cold. Some breeds like Huskies, German shepherds, Labradors have such thick coats they are not usually bothered about the cold, Huskies especially prefer the cold. However some breeds especially thin coated breeds, Greyhounds, French bulldogs, Chihuahua’s struggle the most with the cold so coats and jumpers are a good idea for these breeds. You could also consider where his bed is, it could be near the front/back door and is draughty so by moving it could help.
Walking ❄🌂💧 the rain it won’t hurt you or the dog! It's good to take the dog out in all weathers, the weather is part of the dog’s natural environment so he should be encouraged to walk in the rain, wind, snow it’s only the heat and sun you avoid. Also, they enjoy rolling in wet, smelly, soggy mud… well you wanted a dog 😂
Points to check. Trim the fur around the paws to help prevent ice-balls, these can form between the pad and toes and can be very painful. If you walk on salted pavement always wash your dog’s feet after the walk because salt and grit can irritate their pads, it also prevents them from licking the salt off. Stay away from frozen ponds or lakes. Keep your dog on a lead near frozen water, if they do run onto a frozen lake as much as instinct tells you to go after the dog, please don’t. Most dogs are strong swimmers and will get themselves out. If your dog is less active during winter months don’t forget to reduce the food a bit. If your dog has arthritis, it can be worse for them in cold, wet winter months ask your vet for advice on how to manage their condition.
Early morning and night-time walking.
Try to stick to lighted areas, lighted paths in the park. Wear bright reflective clothes, you can also get reflective wear for dogs. Lighted collars and harnesses, carry a torch or headlamp hat leaves your hands free, you can even get light up balls for those who love to chase a ball!
If you are restricting the time you walk in winter months see next week’s update for games to play indoors to prevent doom, gloom & boredom 😻😊

We often use Freedom Field Bluebells either personally or for training and its great for dogs that are either reactive, fearful, in season or have no recall. We can highly recommend using it. You can have half hour or hour slots, you need to register on their booking site pay and go! They have just announced 2 new fields in Battle which are due to open in a few weeks. Freedom Sniff a 1.5 acre secure field planted with trees, bushes and wild flowers. It has log piles and hiding holes great for dog to explore. Freedom Run is a 2 acres fully secure field with a variety of agility equipment for dogs to run and play around. Follow them on face-book Freedom Fields for their latest news.
Hopefully you will have as much fun there as we do with the peace of mind you are the only one in the field during your time slot.
