Gerald may look like an Arctic fox but he is a handsome Spitz. His knee was feeling sore due to his knee cap not wanting to move smoothly within the groove (patellar luxation). Gerald's groove and patella were found to be mis-shaped with damage to the protective cartilage, Ouch! Instead of the traditional surgery where the groove is deepened, we gave Gerald a shiny new groove for his patella to glide in.
Gerald was happy with his new knee the morning after surgery and walking really well. What a brave boy 😍🐾 Watch a video of Gerald using his new knee the morning after surgery next

Little Chihuahua Louis and his favorite lion came to see us for surgery to correct a ruptured cruciate ligament and luxating patellar in the same leg. Both problems were treated in one surgery and Louis preferred cuddles during his recovery, which we all enjoyed 😍 Looking forward to seeing you again soon, you lovely little bear🐾

Handsome young chap Ziggy took a tumble from the stairs and broke the humerus bone in his front leg. A large spiral fracture and crack in the bone went down nearly the whole length, meaning he needed two metal plates and a pin to support the bone whilst it heals. He was a very brave boy as it was big day in surgery for him. Life is slow and relaxed for him at the moment whilst he rests in his crate, but once he's healed he can catch up on fun with his pals. See you for your follow up xrays soon ❀️

Cute puppy Lottie had a fall and fractured her tibia and fibular bones in her hind leg. Repair with metal pins and wire has stabilised the tibia bone allowing it to heal. Lottie is now resting whilst she recovers which shouldn't take too long for this youngster, and then having fun can start again 🐾

Sam the French Bulldog and his fantastic ears came to visit us following an accident with a car. One of his injuries was a dislocated hip joint, where the ball of the femur and socket in the pelvis were no longer sitting snuggly together. This made it very hard for Sam to walk.
Sometimes the hip can be manovered back in place, but often due to the injury this is not possible or once back in the right place it doesn't stay there and dislocates again.
Sam's hip joint needed to be secured in place with a temporary metal pin for four weeks. This gave the tissues time to heal around the hip to help keep it in place.
The metal pin has now been removed and after some further rest and gentle exercise Sam will be able to use his leg as normal and be back to having fun🐾

Oliver was playing with his pals when a speedy collision with a tree stump resulted in a rather horrid fracture to his elbow. Breaking the bone on both the outside and inside of the elbow joint is what we call a Y fracture. This was quite a jigsaw to put back together but after a long surgery Oliver now has two metal plates and a big screw holding his elbow together. He is now having rest, and important physiotherapy whilst he heals. ❀️🐾

Lulu update 🐾
It's six weeks now since Lulu underwent repair of her fractured femur and we are pleased to report that she has her wiggle back! She showed us more of her normal cheeky self at this visit, and didn't want to sit very still for her examination. Lovely to see her happy and comfortable again.
She still has to take it easy and that might include putting the breaks on a few more weeks but she was keen to show us how well she is walking now 🀩

Pablo's surgery was a procedure to replace his dislocated hip and secure the ball into the socket with a temporary pin that will be removed in a few weeks. This allows the tissues around the hip joint time to heal so when the pin is removed the hip joint should stay in place again.
The fractures at the bottom of each femur bone were aligned and supported with two crossed pins in both legs. Pablo will keep these pins unless they bother him in the future.
Pussycat Pablo, that's a lot of pins putting you back together again! 🐾🐱❀️

Such a brave boy and now repaired with pins in both hind legs and another big pin holding his hip in place. Just a couple of days after his surgery he was starting to walk again! What a star 🌟😍

Lulu the Dachshund had an unfortunate accident where she fractured her femur (thigh bone). She certainly has some of the shortest, bendy legs that we have seen but Rob repaired the broken bone with a metal plate, pin and screws and Lulu was soon up and walking again. Recovery is going well and although only short lead walks are allowed at the moment Lulu doesn't miss out as she can travel in style!

Lovely Sooty the Chihuahua may look a bit drunk, but he was having a big day ❀️ Sooty is epileptic and sometimes a stressful event can lead to him having a seizure. After a fall off the sofa left him with injuries to his hock, a surgery was needed to stabilise the bones and dressings are helping keep the delicate repair in the correct place whilst it heals. Medical conditions can bring challenges to looking after a patient whilst anaesthetised, and Sooty did keep us on our toes, but when you are that cute you are allowed to be demanding to your nurses! Sooty is doing well and has tip top care from his owners whilst he mends and for management of his epilepsy. πŸ’•

What a lovely schnozz ❀️ Handsome Zeus was a speedy runner until an accident resulted in a broken leg a couple of years ago. We saw him at Coast to remove the metal plate that had been placed to support the bone whilst it healed. Lucky Zeus now lives a comfy life in his retirement, being pampered and putting his paws up 🐾

Audrey came to see us with two problems affecting her hind legs. Not only did she have cruciate ligament rupture but also patellar luxation, where her kneecap was sliding in and out of the groove that it should track up and down within. We see patellar luxation in both dogs and cats, the frequency and direction the patella incorrectly moves differs in each patient. It is uncomfortable when this occurs and also damages the cartilage that protect the patella and groove as they rub against each other.
Audrey was affected in such a way that our normal surgical correction was not chosen for her treatment and instead we performed a Patellar Groove Replacement. We removed the misformed and damaged groove and attached a smooth artificial groove in its place, which now allows her kneecap to move correctly and pain free. Poor Audrey also had TPLO cruciate surgery at the same time, so she has a lot of metal implants in her knee now! Audrey needed a lot of rest and received dedicated care at home to get her feeling tip-top after her big surgery. We were pleased to see her again for her check up and report that she is doing brilliantly 🌟🐾
Sorry about the hair cut Audrey, but your looking beautiful again now! πŸ’•

Rolo got himself into a pickle after running after a fox and encountering a car. πŸ€• A fracture to his forelimb needed a visit to see us to realign the broken bones. A metal plate was placed on the radius and the narrower ulnar bone was able to be left to heal by itself as support was provided by the repaired bone. Rolo was on strick rest following his surgery to give the bones a chance to heal without complications. Rolo's mum and dad did a great job as he can be a bouncy boy and it's lovely to see him fixed and so happy! 🐾 Well done Rolo πŸ’•

Meet Bionic Bertie 🌟 who has now had surgery to both hind legs for treatment of cruciate rupture and luxating patellar in both knees. He now has matching little metal plates and screws in both hind legs and is on the way to being super-speedy again.

19/03/2023

Wookie is a beautiful girl who came to see us after she injured her carpus (wrist) whilst trying to keep a visiting cat from hanging out in her garden. A hyperextension injury is normally caused by jumping down from a height, and damaged supporting ligaments of the carpus along with some little fractures meant that we needed to perform a really big surgery for lovely Wookie.
Pancarpal arthrodesis aims to fuse all of the little bones in the carpus together allowing a pain free, but non moving wrist when Wookie has fully healed around 12 weeks after the surgery. It's really important that the bones get a chance to fuse together, and a solid cast has now been placed that needs special care at home until removal in 6 weeks time.
Wookie has a go fund me page to help with the cost of her treatment, as multiple visits are needed for this condition.
Find her story and updates at
https://gofund.me/4aa7065f
Good luck Wookie and see you again soon for your cast check up πŸ’•

Our furry patients come in a variety of different shapes and sizes and we love recognising the breed or mixtures of breeds that come and visit us.
Baylee had us stumped though πŸ€” we had all never met an Eurasier before.
Fluffy and beautiful, an Eurasier is a hybrid of Spitz breeds that includes the Chow Chow, Samoyed and a Spitz. A lovely patient and we have all learnt something today! 🐾

The Tiger who came to tea.
Well nearly, this handsome chap did have breakfast with us after his overnight stay, following surgery to his hip. Chilli is a Maine C**n cat and at 7kg he looked like a Tiger to us. A gentle giant in the clinic, let's hope he keeps up the good behaviour at home and does his very important physiotherapy exercises 🐯😻
