😺 MICROCHPPING 😺

From June 10th 2024 it will be compulsory to have your cat microchipped in the UK.

Microchipping is included as part of our Pet Health Club, and is a quick and easy procedure that can be done during a consultation with a vet or a nurse. It is recommended, as it helps us identify cats in the unfortunate event that they become lost or harmed.

So don't delay, book your cat in to be microchipped before June 2024!

🪥 To brush or not to brush? 🪥

We all know how important it is to clean our own teeth daily, and it’s no different for our pets.

Vet Rita Ferreira suggests "When it comes to starting to brush your pet's teeth for the first time, less is more. Start slowly and let them lick the pet-safe toothpaste from the brush. Gradually build up to brushing when they are more comfortable with your presence in their mouth to avoid conflict!"

While daily brushing is the best way to reduce dental plaque build-up, some pets will just not cooperate no matter how hard we try…

However, there are other dental home care options available to consider, so all is not lost! Speak to any of our team for advice on the best dental home care plan for your pet.

🦷 Sore teeth! 🦷

If you have ever had a toothache, you will certainly appreciate how painful it can be!

Dental disease can not only cause your pet discomfort, but it can affect their general health too, so it is important to spot it early.

Vet Maria Palagesiu says "People often think that if their pet is still eating and not 'complaining' then they must not in any discomfort. Unfortunately, our pets are very good at hiding pain will often continue to display normal behaviour. It is therefore very important to have their mouth checked regularly by a vet or registered nurse. This can be done at annual vaccination appointments and 6 monthly health checks as part of the Pet Health Club"

Please speak to one of the team who can give your pet a full check over and advise on the best course of action to help keep your pet’s teeth clean and healthy.

There are lots of reasons a dog may benefit from wearing a muzzle, but it can be confusing for owners as there are many types to pick from. Here's some tips from us to help you choose the right muzzle for your pooch 🐶💛
🐾 Choose a muzzle that your dog can eat, drink and pant through, such as a basket type muzzle.
🐾 The muzzle needs to fit them comfortably - it shouldn't obscure their vision, dig into their face, or restrict their mouth movement.
🐾 It needs to be secure and as comfy as possible. To make it more comfortable, you can try wrapping a non-irritant fabric around the inside of the nose-piece.

😫 Does your furry friend have terrible breath? 😫

If you are waking up to smelly kisses from your dog or cat, let that be your wake-up call!

Bad breath is caused by harmful bacteria in your pet’s mouth and can indicate that dental disease is taking hold... Other symptoms might be harder to spot depending on how cooperative your pet is.

Vet Ana Pereira suggests "Coming for a routine scale and polish can help to prevent the progression of dental disease and help keep your pet's mouth comfortable. This procedure is done under general anaesthetic - so your pet is totally unaware - for a few reasons. Firstly, we cannot explain what we are doing and why to our furry friends and, as we humans know ourselves, having any kind of dental work done can be a scary experience! We also clean underneath the gumline which can be painful, especially if there is inflammation of the gum present. Thirdly, anaesthesia gives us the ability to clean and examine every single tooth fully, especially those back molars that we would otherwise struggle to access when conscious."

For more information click the link, and of course, our vets and nurses are available to give your pet a full dental check over at your next appointment!

Kicking off we are talking about periodontal disease in dogs and cats.

Periodontal disease occurs when the tissues that surround teeth become infected and inflamed. Bacterial plaque build-up on the teeth causes inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) if not removed. Over time, infection and inflammation spread deeper into the tooth sockets, destroying the bone around the tooth roots – meaning teeth may need to be extracted (if they haven’t already fallen out!).

Clinical director Lubos Kustra says "We see lots of pets with some form of dental disease through our doors at Eastbourne Vets. We encourage owners to start brushing their pet's teeth from infancy to establish good dental hygiene and help prevent having to come and see us with dental issues in later life."

The good news is that plaque can be removed with daily dental home care, and gingivitis can be reversed if caught early. Speak to us about the best dental care regime for your pet to help keep their teeth clean and healthy!
