🌞🐶 Ensuring Your Dog’s Safety During Warmer Weather🐶🌞

As temperatures rise, it's essential to prioritise the safety and comfort of our dogs. Dogs don’t have time to acclimatise to our ever-changing weather, and individual differences such as age, breed, and fitness levels can significantly affect their tolerance to heat. Here are some vital safety tips to keep your dog cool and hydrated, along with a variety of enjoyable activities you can do together at home during the warmer months:

Hydration is Key: Ensure your dog always has access to fresh, cool water. Keep multiple water bowls around the house and garden.

Avoid Hot Pavement: Walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening when the pavement and temperature is cooler. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws!

Never Leave Dogs in Cars: Temperatures can rise quickly inside a parked car, even with the windows cracked. It's safer to leave them at home.

Engaging Activities to Keep Your Dog Entertained at Home:

🏊 Swimming: Paddling pool or a safe body of water, swimming is a fantastic way for your dog to cool off and get some exercise.

🔍 Find It Games: Hide treats, toys or your target odour around the house or garden and let your dog use their nose to find them. It’s a great mental workout!

🍦 Frozen Enrichment: Make frozen treats or ice blocks with toys and snacks inside. This not only cools them down but also keeps them engaged.

🌳 Settling in the Garden: Create a shady spot in your garden where your dog can relax. Bring out a mat and work on your settle. The art of doing nothing is a great skill for all dogs to learn.

🎩 Trick Training: Teach your dog new tricks or polish up on old ones. It’s a fun way to bond and keep their mind sharp.

🦴 Natural Chews: Provide natural chews to keep them busy and help with dental health.

📚 General Obedience: Brush up on basic cues and obedience training. It’s a productive way to spend time together indoors.

Remember, a happy dog is a healthy dog! Stay safe and enjoy summer whilst it lasts!

🌟 Scent Work Sunday 🌟 The best way to spend a Sunday!

Starting the day with 1-1 scent work sessions at Dora's Doggy Daycare. Lovely to meet new teams and see an array of breeds from Belgian Malinois to Cavalier King Charles spaniels, any dog can do scent work, that's the benefit!

Then, Luna and I, were introduced to a new sport, barn hunt with Dog Confidence 🐀. It was so lovely to see how each team adapted to the game. We had good fun, thanks Vickie! I love how anything scent work related helps build confidence and teamwork. The dogs pick up the game so quickly!

Week one of the UK Sniffer Dog Bronze class, and Ozzy and Buddy got off to a flying start! They settled into the class beautifully and took the scent work exercises in their stride. I can't wait to see their progress in the coming weeks.

It's also wonderful to see Piper, Reuben, Rosie, and Willow back for their progression classes. These teams are really pushing their scent work skills now, focusing on building duration for their indication and perfecting systematic searches.

Well done to all the teams! I just love watching these super sniffers in action.

🎉🐾 Congratulations to the new UK Sniffer Dog Bronze teams! 🐾🎉

It has been lovely to watch these partnerships blossom and grow from strength to strength.

Today, the dogs and handlers were put to the test with a mock trial, where they had to trust each other and use all the skills they've learned over the last few workshops. From handling to reading the dogs' body language, the teams took on the challenge with ease!

My biggest takeaway is seeing how much all the teams enjoyed the searches and how their confidence has grown. This improvement is evident in their results, with the dogs indicating more accurately, searching more independently, and developing great search patterns.

The handlers are now more confident in searching blind hides. Could we have asked for a better venue? The setting truly pushed and enhanced their skills, especially during the vehicle search with our own tractor! 🚜

🐾Meet Willow🐾

The newest and youngest member of our pack! 🐕

Willow is a Golden Retriever puppy who has had the best start, thanks to dedicated breeders and proactive owners. Willow is currently attending puppy classes, 1-1 training sessions, and has even been booked for our special puppy visits!

These visits include short socialisation walks, foundation training, and enrichment activities. At this age, puppies like Willow are like little sponges, soaking up all the knowledge and experiences we can provide.

Our puppy pop-ins also include toilet breaks, feeding, and plenty of fun and enriching activities.

We’re so excited to watch Willow grow and develop! 🐶💖

⏰ How often do we say as humans, that we don't have time? ⏰

This sentiment is all too common, especially when it comes to training our dogs. Sometimes, it's not just about having time—it's about finding motivation, knowing the next step, or simply having the drive to push forward. Having a training plan and breaking your goals into manageable steps can make your journey smoother and less overwhelming.

I always encourage my clients to make the most of their time with their dogs. Yes, we live fast-paced lives, and that's often why our dogs struggle in our world. But let's take a moment to slow down. Sit and watch the world go by with your dog, and utilise those mundane tasks as training opportunities.

Take a look at the photo below: it shows my dog Luna working on her settle whilst I clean my van. This seemingly simple act teaches her to switch off and settle, a challenge for a high-drive breed like hers. She's learning to ignore distractions such as other dogs, people, traffic, and, of course, me emptying out my shed of van and cleaning it ready for next weeks adventures!

Remember, when we feel we don't have time, we can still turn everyday moments into training opportunities. For example:

☕ While putting the kettle on, use that time for a micro training session.
🍽️ When preparing and eating dinner, have your dog work on boundary training.
🚪 When visitors arrive, practice place training and calmness.
🚶‍♂️ Heading out for a walk? Work on door manners before stepping outside.

Remember, dog training doesn't have to be all flashy like we see on social media. Enjoy the mundane and take time to be in the moment with your dog! 🐾

📢🐾 National Microchipping Month! 🐾📢

June is National Microchipping Month, and it's the perfect time to ensure your dog's details are up to date. 🐶💖

🔍 Why is this important?

It’s YOUR responsibility to keep your dog's microchip details current. This means not just updating information when you first take ownership but also ensuring your home address and mobile phone number are accurate throughout their lifetime.

📅 Did you know?

Since April 6, 2016, it’s been a legal requirement for dog owners to have their dogs microchipped in the UK. This is under the Microchipping of Dogs (England) Regulations 2016 and the Microchipping of Dogs (Wales) Regulations 2016. Failure to comply can lead to fines up to £500 and even criminal charges! 😱

🩺 Regular Checks:

It’s important to check your dog's microchip regularly, such as during vet visits. This ensures it hasn't migrated and is still functioning efficiently, even though issues are rare. It's also beneficial for training your dog to be comfortable with being handled in different scenarios, such as having their chip scanned. This is all good experience for them!

👍 Benefits of Microchipping:

A microchip significantly increases the chances of reuniting lost dogs with their owners compared to just a collar and tag. It's a reliable and permanent form of identification.

If you know me, you know I have a soft spot for spaniels! So, you can imagine my excitement when Harry and Bobby joined our Wizz dog training walks today! 🐾

Bobby, at 14 years young, is looking fabulous and fit! It was a joy to walk with them, and a huge shoutout to their owner for all her hard work—it truly shows.

These two were a pleasure to walk with, and they absolutely made my day!

Starting the day by introducing Bruno to the world of scent work to help build engagement and support his other training goals.

Next up were Lyra, Luca, Hugo, Honey, and Willow, who attended the Series Two workshop today! 🌟

You all learned so many new skills, from vehicle searches to navigating novel environments. It's amazing to see how much your confidence has grown! 🐾

Scent work is fantastic for building teamwork and engagement, and it offers numerous benefits for our dogs. It keeps them mentally stimulated, improves their problem-solving skills, and strengthens the bond between dog and handler.

Can Old Dogs Learn New Tricks? Absolutely They Can!

The saying, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks," is simply not true! Izzy is nearly 13 and we both are learning a new sport called Hoopers. It is helping to keep not only her body but her brain active and it's also helping me to continue to develop my skills as a trainer.

Engaging in activities with your dog not only strengthens your bond but also boosts training. Whether it's teaching a new trick or playing a game of hide and seek, quality fun time together is really beneficial for whatever your training goals are.

Walking our dogs is great for exercising and maintaining fitness, but offering varied activities fulfills their needs and helps provide them with physical and mental stimulation.

🐾 The power of a dog's nose never ceases to amaze me! From detecting cash, fi****ms, explosives, or drugs to identifying medical conditions, their noses are their superpower.

Dogs can also aid in conservation by locating endangered species and detecting invasive plants. They excel in search and rescue missions and in sniffing out diseases like cancer and diabetes.

Next time your dog wants to sniff to gather information, take the time to stop and let them! It's their way of reading the world. 🐶💪✨

Why You Shouldn't Stroke a Dog Without Consent!

While it's tempting to pet every dog you meet, it's important to remember that not all dogs are comfortable with being approached by strangers. Here's why you should always seek consent before greeting a dog:

1. Not All Dogs Are Social Butterflies
Dogs, like people, have unique personalities. Some love meeting new people, while others may be more reserved or fearful.

2. Health Concerns
A dog might have an illness or injury that isn't visible. Petting such a dog could cause pain and pain can have a big affect on behaviour.

3. Dogs in Training
Many dogs are in training, from pet dogs to working dogs. Distractions from strangers can hinder their progress.

4. Some dogs need space!
Some dogs are anxious or reactive around unfamiliar people.

5. Learning to Stay Calm
They may be learning to stay calm around distractions. Uninvited interactions can disrupt their training and make it harder for them to remain composed.

How to Properly Approach a Dog:

Ask the Owner: Always ask the owner's permission before approaching or petting their dog.

Observe the Dog's Body Language: Look for signs of comfort or discomfort, such as relaxed posture or a tucked tail. If the dog moves away respect their decision.

Approach Calmly: If you get permission, approach the dog slowly and let the dog come to you.

Respect Boundaries: If the dog shows signs of discomfort or the owner advises against petting, respect their boundaries.

Advocate for Your Dog

We need to start advocating for our dogs, we are responsible for being their voice when needed. I am passionate about raising awareness for dog etiquette and encouraging responsible dog ownership.

🐾Shoutout to Mali for acing his scent work session this morning! 🎉 Scent work is an amazing activity, especially as the weather gets warmer. It can be done anywhere, from the coolness of your own home to your garden.

Why do I love scent work so much?! Well, for a start, living with three spaniels, scent work is amazing for mental stimulation. I want calm, content dogs, and I am conscious about the balance between mental and physical stimulation.
