As the temperatures drop and winter weather sets in, it’s essential to take extra care of our pets during these chilly months. Here are some simple but important tips to keep them safe, warm, and healthy:

🐾 Shorter, More Frequent Walks: Keep your dog’s walks shorter but more frequent, especially if they still have lots of energy! For indoor fun, provide plenty of toys and games to keep them mentally stimulated.

🐱 Outdoor Cats: If your cat ventures outside, ensure they have access to shelter from the cold. And, even if they typically avoid it, set up a litter tray indoors in case they choose to stay inside.

🧥 Dog Coats: For dogs that feel the cold more—such as puppies, senior dogs, or smaller breeds—well-fitting coats are a great way to keep them warm on walks.

🛏 Bedding and Blankets: Ensure your pet has a cozy, draft-free spot to sleep. Raised beds help avoid cold floors, and plenty of blankets will keep them toasty throughout the night.

💧 Fresh Water: Cold weather doesn’t mean pets drink less, so make sure fresh water is always available to keep them hydrated!

🚿 Clean Paws: After walks, wipe down your pet’s paws and belly to remove harmful salt, grit, and antifreeze—salt and grit can irritate their paws, while antifreeze is toxic if ingested.

🛑 Safety First: Watch out for icy paths and roads to prevent slipping. Also, remember that poor visibility in winter can make it harder for drivers to spot your pets, so always keep them on a leash.

Stay safe and warm this winter, and if you have any questions or concerns about your pet’s winter care, we’re here to help!

🐾 January is Walk Your Dog Month! 🐾

Have you kick started your year by keeping active and healthy with your furry companions?
Walk Your Dog Month is all about encouraging dog owners to commit to daily walks, providing physical and mental benefits for both you and your dog.

Here are some fun ways to celebrate this month and make walking your dog a new routine:

🐕 Commit to Daily Walks: Pledge to walk your dog every day this January—rain or shine! Regular walks boost their health and strengthen your bond.

🌳 Discover New Routes: Spice up your walks by exploring different parks, trails, or even around your neighborhood. New scents and sights will keep your dog’s interest piqued!

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Involve the Whole Family: Make it a fun family activity! Everyone can take turns walking, giving your dog lots of love and attention.

🎯 Set Goals: Whether it’s a longer walk or trying out a hike, setting goals will help keep you and your dog motivated throughout the month.

🔒 Walk Safely: Always use a secure leash and ensure your dog has proper identification. Safety first, always!

🐾 Socialize: Dog walks are perfect opportunities for your dog to meet new friends and get socialised with other dogs and people.

📸 Document Your Journey: Capture your best walking moments and share them with us! Use and tag us so we can cheer you on!

Together, let’s make Walk Your Dog Month a fun and rewarding experience for both pets and their owners. 🐾💙

🐕‍🦺🦷Come with us to see behind the scenes when performing dental work!

Our top points of care for this procedure

🦷Dental charting is an essential tool that helps us track the health of your pet’s teeth. It allows us to monitor tartar buildup, gingivitis, and gum recession, while also identifying abnormal pockets, tooth mobility, and resorptive lesions.

🦷🩻Dental radiographs (X-rays) are critical for getting a complete picture of your pet’s dental health. They help us see what’s happening beneath the gum line, allowing us to detect issues like tooth resorption, periodontal disease, root fractures, and even missing teeth—problems that aren’t visible during a regular exam. Radiographs also help us plan for any necessary extractions, ensuring we use the best approach.

🦷🪥Home dental care plays a crucial role in maintaining your pet’s oral health. Brushing your pet’s teeth daily or every other day is one of the most effective ways to reduce harmful bacteria and prevent dental disease. We also recommend using dental products approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC), which have been scientifically tested for effectiveness.
If you’d like more details on the best products for your pet or how to take care of your pets teeth, feel free to ask one of our team members or call us on 02380620607, or alternatively message us on PetsApp 💙

We are excited to share that two of our Registered Veterinary Nurses, Jenny and Anna, have recently completed an in-depth, specialised course in Feline Dentistry. Over the course of three months, they studied six comprehensive modules covering a range of topics crucial to feline dental health, including radiography techniques and dental clinic practices.

This advanced training equips them with the knowledge and skills to not only assist our veterinary team with feline dental procedures, particularly radiographic imaging of the mouth, but also to share their insights with fellow nursing colleagues. Jenny and Anna are now better equipped to identify and understand a wide variety of dental conditions that can affect cats, ensuring that our team can provide even more thorough and informed care for our feline patients alongside the vets!

We are proud of their commitment to professional development and are confident that their newly acquired expertise will enhance the care we provide to all our patients!

Well done Jenny & Anna 🦷🐈🤩

🎄🐾 A season of care and comfort 🐾🎄

The Christmas season is full of excitement, but it can also pose some unique risks for your pets!

At Riverside Vets, we want to ensure that your pets enjoy the festivities as much as you do, so here are some essential tips to keep them safe and healthy:

🎁 1. Keep Decorations Out of Reach
Tinsel, baubles, and fairy lights are beautiful but can be dangerous if ingested. Pets, especially curious kittens and puppies, may chew on or swallow decorations, which can lead to choking or internal injuries. Keeping decorations high up and out of reach helps prevent accidents.

🎁 2. Be Careful with Christmas Food/ sweet treats such as chocolate, mince pies, nuts, and rich cakes as these can be toxic to pets. Chocolate, in particular, contains theobromine, which is harmful to dogs and cats. Rich, fatty foods can also cause digestive upset or even pancreatitis in pets so try to avoid giving them scraps!

🎁 3. Winter weather brings its own set of dangers!Antifreeze, which is often used to prevent car engines from freezing, has a sweet taste that attracts pets but is highly toxic and requires immediate medical attention! Additionally, rock salt and de-icing products used on roads can irritate pets’ paws. If your dog enjoys walks during the colder months, make sure to wipe their paws thoroughly when they come indoors.

🎁 4. Keep Pets Safe from Festive Plants
Plants like poinsettias, holly, and mistletoe can be toxic to pets if ingested. While they’re lovely to have around the home, it’s important to place them out of reach of pets, especially cats who may be tempted to nibble on leaves or berries.

🎁 5. Give Your Pet a Quiet Space
Christmas can be a noisy time with the hustle and bustle of visitors, parties, and fireworks. Some pets, especially those who are anxious, can find all the noise overwhelming. Create a calm, quiet space where your pet can retreat to when they need a break from the festivities.

🎁 6. Mind the Gifts
Be cautious of small items such as toy parts, gift wrapping, and ribbons that could pose choking hazards. If you’re wrapping presents, make sure they’re kept out of your pet’s reach until you’re ready to open them.

By following these simple tips, you can ensure that your pets remain safe, healthy, and happy during the festive season. If you have any concerns or need advice, don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re here to support you and your furry friends on 02380620607 or PetsApp us!
