Suitable hiding places are essential for a happy healthy reptile. Large or small all reptiles and amphibians feel safer with appropriate hiding spots without they can easily end up stressed leading to health problems.
Strategically positioned all around the enclosure; lots of hides and hiding opportunities provide sheltered view points for your reptile, so they can look over their terrain feeling confident they're hidden from sight and 'safe from potential predation'.
Reptiles prefer to be and feel more secure squeezed tightly up against a surface - this is known as positive thigmotactic behaviour, reptiles do really need lots of appropriate, tight spaces to squeeze into and hide should they want.
Using hides/caves not only provides necessary shelter for your reptile but also creates microclimates within their enclosure that are slightly cooler or warmer and more humid. Cool spots are as important as hot spots in order for your reptile to thermoregulate comfortably.
