Losing a pet came be heartbreaking so its good to know about this bereavement support ๐Ÿพ

The loss of a pet, or even anticipating that loss, can be incredibly difficult. During this emotional journey, sometimes you need someone who truly understands. Someone who's walked a similar path and has the professional training to guide you through the grief.

That's where Lucy Doyle, our in-house bereavement advisor, comes in. Lucy listens with compassion and without judgment, in a completely confidential setting. Whether you need a supportive ear to process what happened, help navigating your own grief, or guidance on supporting a grieving child, Lucy knows how crucial it is to have your feelings acknowledged.

Losing her beloved Dobermann, Troy, in 2021, Lucy's own grief journey inspired her to become the support she wished she had received. This led her to pursue bereavement training with the Blue Cross.

Our bereavement support is completely free. You can reach out to the team and get a call booked in easily through PetsApp, email, or by phone if you're comfortable doing so.

Bonfire Night Reminder: Keep Your Cats Safe!

It's that time of year again, Bonfire Night is fast approaching. People will be launching fireworks from tonight, so it's important to keep your feline friends indoors. Fireworks can cause cats distress, and this can lead to them getting lost. Stay vigilant and keep your furry friends safe.

Protect your pets this Halloween! ๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿซ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿ”ฎ

Halloween can be a fun and exciting time for everyone, including our furry friends. However, it is important to remember that some of the things we enjoy during this holiday can be dangerous to our pets. For example, candles in jack o lanterns can easily be knocked over by curious pets, causing a fire hazard. It's best to use battery-operated candles or simply avoid using candles altogether.

Additionally, sweets and chocolate can be toxic to pets, causing symptoms ranging from vomiting and diarrhoea to seizures and even death. Keep candy and other treats out of reach of pets, and make sure they cannot get into the trash where wrappers and other dangerous items may be present.

Finally, be mindful of trick or treaters coming to your door. Some pets may become scared or agitated by the constant ringing of the doorbell and the presence of strangers in costumes. It may be best to keep your pets in a separate room with the door closed during peak trick or treating hours.

By taking these simple precautions, you can help ensure that your pets have a safe and happy Halloween!

The new rules mean cats must be implanted with a microchip before they reach the age of 20 weeks and their contact details stored and kept up to date in a pet microchipping database.

All owners must have their cat microchipped by 10 June 2024 and owners found not to have microchipped their cat will have 21 days to have one implanted, or may face a fine of up to ยฃ500.

โ€œCats Protection is delighted that pet cats in England will be given the same protection as dogs when it comes to microchipping. The charity regularly reunites owners with their much-loved cats, and in most cases this is only possible thanks to microchips. No matter how far from home they are found, or how long they have been missing, if a cat has a microchip there is a good chance that a lost cat will be swiftly returned home.โ€

The wait is over!

Clients and new clients are invited to start booking their appointments from the 13th of March onwards, at our brand new cat only clinic - an extension to our current Edenbridge practice.

To ensure a smooth transition, we will be offering appointments on Mondays and Thursdays only in the Cat Clinic until we have settled in.

๐Ÿฑ Practice Update ๐Ÿฑ

Portland Vets is a professional and caring veterinary practice. We are also progressive and steadily growing. This is growth not only in the number of pets under our care but in our in-house medical skills, use of technology and the quality of our medical equipment.

We are as proud of our front of house, client facing areas in our well maintained buildings as we are of the in-patient care area (wards, operating theatres etc) that are nearly always out of sight of any vet clients.

As one of the few independent vets left in our part of the country we have freedom to be better and different. Edenbridge is a growing town and we are preparing this surgery for further growth over the coming years. But we have gone further and decided to give our Edenbridge surgery its own speciality - the expansion on this site is the construction of a dedicated cat only clinic.

The nearest cat only clinics (we think) are Worthing or London. This new clinic, in its own detached building, will have a reception area, two consult rooms, a cat ward, preparation/dental/X-ray area and its own operating theatre.

Upstairs are new offices and a staff room. The car park has been expanded to around 20 parking places for the surgery.

We have a wealth of experience amongst the Portland Vets Edenbridge team, which will be
shared between both of the on-site clinics.
It would be impolite to comment on the total number of years!

Those who know Jenny Kemp, who has been the lead vet at our Edenbridge surgery since it opened in 2013, has a special interest in geriatric cats and may well be seen more in one surgery than the other.

Our canine patients then also get an upgrade to their Portland Vets experience when visiting our existing Edenbridge surgery - as they will now have a cat free vet clinic!

The plasterers are finishing this week and we hope to open the clinic by the end of the year. Photographs of the current nearly finished cat clinic building will be updated every two weeks and the internal plans are visible on our website.

If you have a cat that finds it's stressful visiting the vets, exacerbated by the smells, noise and presence of dogs in the waiting room, then Portland Vets new cat only clinic is for you!

Please contact the reception team [email protected] to register your interest and also if you would like a personal tour of our new cat only clinic when it is completed.

We look forward to seeing you ๐Ÿฑ

Winter is approaching and with it an ever increasing financial crisis for many.

As an independent practice, our local community and its residents have always been important to us, so we wanted to find a way we could help. As of Monday we will have a pet food bank at the practice, to help anyone (you do not need to be a client of ours) who is in need of food for their cat or dog.

To ensure pet owners privacy and to allow for anonymity, direct access will be available without anyone having to come in to reception and ask for food.

Both boxes are labelled as below and will be situated to the left of our front door, before the slope. We of course would love donations too, which can be placed directly in the boxes ready for someone to take. Any food left over will be periodically donated to the Kit Wilson Trust.

Please, please help yourself if you are in need and as a community we can help each other. We know that these are difficult times and our food banks are doing their best, so we hope this offers some further support.
