It was lovely having Coco for her big holiday recently and to look after her in our own home. Coco is an older lady now but still with the spirit and energy of a youngster. She is such a happy and contented dog with a fascination for playing with dried up leaves it’s one of her favourite games. It was a pleasure to take care of her she is welcome back anytime!

We said goodbye on Friday to our wonderful host and good friend Chris. Chris died unexpectedly and so young at 50 on the 21st February. Chris loved dogs of all shapes and sizes and had a particular passion for spaniels. Ruby, Evie and Rufus were amongst his favourite Barking Mad dogs that he enjoyed hosting so much. Chris also looked after our own sheltie boys when we were aware on holiday and he was always in his element to take care of them. He was a beautiful person so kind and thoughtful and we’ll miss our extended tea breaks and lunches with Chris when we dropped off dogs and caught up on his news. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

This has been a terribly sad week as we said goodbye to our beloved host Joy after a very short battle with cancer. Joy was one of the very first hosts to join our Barking Mad family. Her real name was Lynda and her dad gave her Joy as a nickname because as a child she brought so much Joy. Her dad was not wrong. Joy was a truly wonderful host and a great friend. She loved dogs of all shapes and sizes from Chihuahuas to Weimaraners. She even loved the naughty one that climbed on her kitchen worktops and ate eleven eggs, shells and all from an egg holder and half a loaf of bread from the bread bin! I always loved driving to Joy’s with a dog we always got such a warm welcome and I really enjoyed our chats, laughs and time together. I also knew she loved taking great care of the dogs and that they were treated like one of her own. Our thoughts are with her daughter Jo and her family and friends at this difficult time.

Dapper Dave the Mini Wire Haired Dachshund just completed his first proper holiday with us. He’s a small dog but has a huge bark! We look forward to having him back on holiday next month.

We are so sad to hear that Edel a most beautiful Weimaraner was out to sleep last week after a short illness. He was one of our very first Barking Mad dogs and was most definitely a “gentleman” dog. We are so happy to have had an opportunity to look after him ourselves and to get to know him. He was the most wonderful dog and his mum and dad will miss him so much. He is of course our cover boy on our page and we’re very happy to still have him there.

For 18 months since joining Barking Mad we’ve been waiting for a sheltie to board, then two come along at once! Skye and Isla’s mum asked if they could stay with our shelties of course we said yes! They were perfect house guests during their two night trial, and all the dogs got on great. We’re looking forward to having them again for two weeks in September. Sheltie heaven!

We had a delightful house guest for a couple nights, Luna the Cockapoo! Luna’s mum asked if she could stay with our shelties so she plenty of four legged company. She got on great with her new friends and we’re looking forward to hosting Luna again next month.

It was wonderful to have Lurcher Saffy back with us for another stay. She is always so well behaved and fun to have around. Thanks to host Joy for taking great care of her.

We thought we’d introduce you to the Barking Mad Edinburgh Shetland Sheepdogs. We have three this is Logan it’s his fifth birthday today! He is always on the go and is definitely a Velcro dog he never leaves your side!

Rufus the Springer Spaniel was a delight for us to have on his first holiday with Barking Mad. We’re looking forward to having him back in a couple of months. If we can help with one to one boarding for your dog please give Kevin a call on 0131 376 0530.

Since you all loved little Percy so much (and who could blame you?!), here he is playing fetch with Amy whilst mum and Shannon went over the boring stuff.* 🥰🐾 *(Read: did some actual work!)

Our Story

Hi everyone! We are Amy and Shannon and we are the Barking Mad Edinburgh franchisees. We met whilst working together in a veterinary practice, and have become very close friends over the years. We are both big animal lovers and between us have owned lots of different pets, but dogs have always been number one. In fact, it was our own dogs that led to us becoming such good friends. We love nothing more than taking our three out for the day – climbing the Pentland hills, swimming at Cramond beach or lazing around in a dog friendly pub! Dogs are a big part of any family, and leaving them when you go on holiday is a concern for every owner. We aim to take away that worry so that you can concentrate on being excited about your time away! Barking Mad offers an alternative to kennels by providing home-from-home boarding for your dog, who will be carefully matched to one of our dedicated host families. We will come to your home to meet you and to get all the information we need to pair you with a host who can provide the home comforts your dog is used to, with no change to their normal routine.
