SCRATCHING!
Did you know it is a legal requirement to provide your cat with scratching material?
It is in a cat’s natural instincts to scratch to sharpen claws, and to remove old/shedding horn.
To help this process at home, follow these recommendations:
- Keep claws a good length (it’s a good idea to discuss this with your vet if you are unsure).
- Never punish for scratching behaviours!
- It your cat likes to use the sofa at home, try using sprays such as feliway with pheromones in to encourage using their scratching post.
- Here at the cattery we regularly use catnip sprays to encourage play on or around their scratching item.
- Pro tip: if your cat scratches down the way, it may prefer a scratching board located flat on the floor. If your cat scratches and stretches up the way, try getting a post for them.
We have multiple different scratch boards and posts you can buy in our office if you don’t have one at home.

Today our team braved their fears and conquered the Killicrankie zip line with 110 meter long lines across the River Garry and 35 meters high!! We are very proud to say we have also nearly met our target of £500 fundraised for Fife Cat Shelter. An amazing well done to our team!!! Another meet the team!
Meet Jaimie, her 2 cats Nym and Pongo, and one of her favourite visitors at the cattery Orlando!
Jaimie has come all the way from Vancouver, and is currently in her fourth year of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Edinburgh.
She was a recent employee of the month here at the cattery, her love for cats is undeniable and her enthusiasm to provide the best levels of care shines through in her work with us.
When Jaimie isn’t busy caring for animals (of all varieties), she enjoys playing badminton and spending time with friends.
We love you Jaimie (so does Orlando!), keep up the good work!

On the 20th of November our staff will be taking part in a ziplining challenge at Killiecrankie zip park on behalf of Fife Cat Shelter SC021654.

With heights up to 35m, we will be putting on our brave pants for the day in aid of stray and unwanted cats.

Any donations are appreciated, all money goes straight to Fife Cat Shelter, where they are completely self-funded and reliant on this money for food and litter supplies.

😻Cheeky Milo😻
Mr Milo is a 15 year old, very well loved family cat. He’s definitely one who knows what he wants and tells you all about it.😹
Milo has been a regular with us over the years, and because of this we’ve come to know him very well. On a recent stay with us, a member of our staff quickly picked up that Milo was drinking and urinating excessively. After contacting the owner it was clear that, as he is normally an outdoor cat, this wasn’t noticed at home. We decided to take Milo to Braid vets, our partnership veterinary group. We took a urine sample along with us, and with the results of this and blood tests it was confirmed that Milo has diabetes.
During the remainder of his stay with us, we provided Milo with multiple litter trays, water bowls, and lots of treats and affection. 😻
Now back home and being seen by his own vet, Milo is starting on insulin injections twice daily to get him feeling great again. 😺
We are so very lucky to have a full team of highly qualified staff that are not only cat lovers, but are also able to use their expertise as vets, or vet nurses at the cattery. 😸🎉

Time for another meet the team! Lovely Emily is in her fourth and final year as a Veterinary Nursing student at Edinburgh Napier University. Her family whippet called James is back home in Inverness. She is a big animal lover and a big part of our team. Emily is always full of enthusiasm coming into work and there is no problem she can’t solve. In her spare time, she enjoys running, new adventures, playing guitar and even makes her own jewellery (spot the earrings in the first picture!). Keep it up Emily! 😁❤️😻

😻Juliette aka Puddy 😻
Juliette recently stayed with us for a short stay of 2 nights. It was her first time staying in a cattery, and like anyone, her owner was apprehensive to see how she would settle. We are thrilled to say Puddy thrived while she was with us!
It can be beneficial for both cat and owner to organise a short stay with us, prior to any lengthy stay. This allows your cat to acclimatise and become more confident with us and their surroundings. It also allows you to get a better understanding of how we care for cats here at Colinton Cattery, and help put your mind at ease for any future stays.

Employee of the month!
SOPHIE
Sophie has gone over and above for all of the cats 🐱 this month and she is indispensable to our little team. Here’s a little bit about her..
- Sophie is going into her third year at Edinburgh University to become a Vet. ⭐️
- We know she loves all animals because of her own 2 cats Ginny and Archie, her 2 pigs Paddy and Charlie and her 2 labradors Lily and Robbie! 😻
- She gives 110% with everything she does and is always keen to learn more.

Think we’ve found Jen’s favourite 😻 Ben is SO affectionate and a typical lap cat that will sit there for hours. His owner says he even follows him to the supermarket and waits for him outside! ❤️ We love you Ben!! ❤️

Meet the team!
Every week we are going to introduce you to a new member of the team who are all working very hard behind the scenes to create the best experience for your cats 😻
This is Megan, she is the Manager and Head of Cat Care and Experience. Megan studied at Napier and graduated with a first class Honours degree in Criminology. She is currently studying her Level 3 Diploma in Feline Care, Behaviour and Welfare.
As you can see, Megan loves all animals. She regularly competes her horses, and when she isn’t riding or at the cattery, she’s walking her dogs Chip and Nelly and enjoying cuddles with her own rescue cat Tilly.

We groom all of our visitors daily, included in our price.
We think grooming is a necessity, not a luxury. Not only does it keep everyone looking and feeling great, it also helps reduce hair balls, and allows us to keep a closer eye on a cat’s overall health.
Here is Sophie giving Dimitri a good groom, he is Maine C**n and long haired, so grooming also helps stop matts from forming.
