Hi everyone, Bramble has been doing great out in the enclosure, here he is the first night self anointing himself, have to admit I was a bit worried putting him out there with tinky winky at first. In the morning I went out to check on him and to my horror he wasnt in his box, I searched all around the bushes thinking hes got stuck somewhere and still couldnt see him, opens tinky winkys box and there he was all tucked in beside her and has been there ever since awww ❤️🦔

Morning everyone. Bramble was found wandering and limping out in the daylight a while back, he was tiny and covered in fly strike, he has also lost a front leg due to a strimmer. Unfortunately he cant be released without both his front limbs as he needs to dig for food. Ive put him in the outdoor enclosure this morning for a bit freedom for now ❤️🦔

Morning everyone, busy week with three babies needing help. (pinky and perky)come in last night just over a 100grms and doing well so far. Another one from last week a girl still to be named also doing well. Almost finished my enclosure for Tinky Winky who cant be released due to neurological problems so she will have to live the rest of her life here. Hopefully she will be happy enough with her new home however nothing beats you’re freedom. ❤️🦔

Hi everyone. Our wildlife is desperate for water right now with all the hot weather. Hogs are dying from dehydration. Ive had a few in that haven’t survived because of this, keep topping up the water bowls its life saving! This little hog is Sandy, he was brought in yesterday, dehydrated and peeing blood not sure if he will be ok yet. Three other hogs with all sorts of problems going on at the moment but all doing well so far. I haven’t been posting lately as I lost my little soul mate back in April and I was absolutely gutted for a while however the hogging still continued. Ive now filled the empty dog bed two weeks ago with another rescue, a little girl called Romelia from Bosnia and she has certainly brought a spark back to the home 🦔❤️

Hi everyone , Little Noel has been here a week he has a heavy worm burdon didn’t think he was going to survive a few times over the week. Noel was spotted in his garden at night looking rather small for this time of year, he weighed 440 grms so thankfully the right decision was made to get him checked out. Once you get a bit experience with hogs visiting you’re garden you can tell from the naked eye when somethings not right especially at this time of year when they are normally hibernating. Hope you all have a great Christmas ❤️🦔

The Blackwater Babies - What Can We Learn From Them?

Many years ago we were called out to a garden in Blackwater because the homeowners were seeing a hedgehog appear on their snow-covered patio. It was eating then wandering off and they were concerned it was ill and too small.

We discovered it was a hoglet who weighed just 140 grams. It was strong but tiny.

Next, the hedgehog mum suddenly appeared with another three hoglets.

We put the first youngster back with his siblings and over the next few weeks received updates. The whole family were fed every day and we made sure there was access to water that wasn’t frozen over.

They were nesting under a dry shed where they had their mum together with food every night from their human friends. This combination of maternal care, a warm nest and regular food meant all but one of the hoglets survived the winter.

The Blackwater Babies proved not all hoglets need rescuing so you should always check with you local rescue centre before removing them.

If you find a hedgehog who, irrelevant of their size, looks healthy and purposeful, they’re probably fine and finding food somewhere – usually from a human who offers meals regularly and consistently.

Hi everyone what miserable day out there. Po has had a miserable week too, all the dog bites are healed however he developed an abscess under his armpit (that was a first for me) so he has been back on the antibiotics and baths keeping it clean with a gentle squeeze at the site when he was least expecting it. Today its looking a lot better and it seems to have stopped filling up again, heres hoping anyways. Have a great weekend everyone ❤️🦔

On the 29th October if you are out and about in Edinburgh go to the Royal Mile and you will see thousands of people marching for our persecuted wildlife. Animals don’t have a voice or choice but we do and we will keep on marching until the Scottish Government tighten up the loopholes and ban fox hunting completely and Snares and all the other cruel gadgets that are used that cause suffering to our wildlife. This year I’m unable to join the march as its my granddaughter’s birthday party but I will be thinking of all my friends who will be there that never give up the fight to protect our wildlife ❤️🦊

Hi everyone, sorry theirs not been any updates recently I’ve been busy settling in to a new job. The hogging has been going on as usual with a mix of all sorts of troubles. Tinky winky has been the worst with a head injury poor girl was only able to lay on her back stretched out for a while. Po was found by our Royal mail ladies who stood guard until I got her, she was in some mess with dog bites and poor body condition from a worm burdon but she has pulled through. Hunter is off to Falkland and mr snuffles and the torbain hog have been released up the rabbi braes. Four hogs left fattening up nicely. Hope you are all keeping well ❤️🦔

Norman is starting to fill the pasta bowl now he’s up at 516, not long now until he gets his freedom. Mr snuffles has been a worry and still is, his lungs don’t sound good, he coughs he sneezes and nose still dripping, I was told by the vet he could have scarring on the lungs so I really don’t know what to do with him anymore as he is nowhere near fit for a release ❤️🦔

Hi everyone, not our usual hog story today but this feathered friend has been in the shed for a sleepover last night. He was hiding in my friends garden and It would have been safe to leave him there however he probably wouldn’t have lasted the night with the amount of cats that hang around there at night , so first job this morning is get him out the cage and back to my friends garden before all the noise starts cleaning out the hogs, hopefully his mum will be around ❤️

It’s hoglet season - and with all this wacky warm weather, all the poor hedgehog mummas out there are doing their best, but it’s thirsty work!

If you have hedgehogs in your garden, try leaving out a bowl of water. The hot dry weather also dries out the ground a lot, making it much harder for them to forage - so if you have any, maybe a bowl of meaty cat or dog food too! 🦔

16/06/2022

The temperature is soaring! Please remember to offer shallow bowls of water for hedgehogs and other wildlife, it can literally save a life! Pop a few pebbles in to make sure insects can escape. 🦔 💧

Morning everyone, this little hog came in on Sunday was on a road getting attacked by a seagull. Right away I could tell there was a respiratory problem as he was struggling to breathe and vocal with every breathe, warmed him up and started fluids pain relief and an antibiotic, he had no appetite and was lethargic and mucus coming from his nose. Past few days Ive been orally feeding him and lots and lots of fluids flushing him out. This is a heavy worm burdon which effects the lungs, first case Ive had like this and I really didnt think he would survive. Here we are though 4 days later eating on his own and looking a lot better, he has old wounds on either side of him caked in mud that need softened and picked off so I have started on that today, poor fellows nerves have been in tatters every time I go near him but he has settled down now. ❤️🦔

Hi everyone wee update on our boys. First pic is Johnny who is almost totally healed now, he’s finished his antibiotic and between that and the manuka honey its worked wonders, these were old wounds and had mostly healed on there own however they were still scabbed up and soil packs to them too, after removing all that he only had a few raw bits still to heal and a bit infection, he has a bald bit below the ear as well which had already healed. Next pic is Bob who come in emaciated due to a worm burdon, he was really lucky to survive this the state he was in but he has been gaining plenty weight daily since his treatment. Both hogs will be released again in another week. Ive got another boy who came in on Sunday who’s pretty much fighting for his life right now, more about his story tomorrow ❤️🦔

Hi everyone, sorry for the lack of updates my duties have been taking over my hobby lately. Bob is now in the oudoor enclosure fattening up and here is another hog I took in a few days ago. Johnny Depp was stuck in a drain hole of some sort up Chapel however this was to his advantage as he has a nasty dog bite, I’ve been getting the dirty scabs off him to reveal the wounds and treating them with Manuka honey and he’s on antibiotic for now. Im contacting Safer Communities after the holiday weekend to get a cover over that pipe. ❤️🦔

If you're not taking part in please remember to check for hedgehogs before using strimmers or mowers. If you are taking part in - please check very carefully before you take a machine to the grass in June - and if possible leave a corner or edge to continue to grow wild, providing habitat and natural food for hedgehogs.
